haha it's alright. if ur applyin to penn, u can't be that bad.............can u??? lol j/k

lmao. true, true.

i know cc loves talking about dreams so here's another. this one is the truth. i get accepted -- not to penn state but penn, penn. and so i go to school and i walk out of my car with chariots of fire playing in the background slow motion, and then suddenly a blast into hardcore rap. dude if this whole thing works out i am going to feel royal.

jesus, i need to write my paper.

i don't have a single dream about any college.......sigh

haha. well you might. it might be those things were you do have a dream you just don't remember it -- not just the dream's story -- but having it at all.

dude, i gotta join an acapella group at penn if i get in. that's a must.

^ I had a dream I got accepted which felt awesome...then I woke up and I had to resist the urge to smack myself really hard lolz...Trust me, you don't want to have acceptance dreams, they're the worst, once you return to reality that is.

I suspect this will be good news to most people on this thread....Penn ED #'s drop 8%
Early decision applications drop 8 percent | Interactive Feature - News

Furda wrote in an e-mail that as a result of recent layoffs and the collapse of the financial service industry, fewer students applied to Wharton than in past years. Only 29 percent of the total early decision applications applied to the school .

Fifty-seven percent of early decision applicants applied to the College, 12 percent to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and two percent to the School of Nursing.

While, as usual, almost half of this year's applicants hail from the Mid-Atlantic, the number of applicants from California dropped from 332 last year to 292 this year.

This number is "soft" compared to last year's, Furda said, particularly since the University had increased recruiting efforts in the state this year. Despite the drop, he said Penn will continue its strong California recruitment efforts due to the size and demographics of the state.

In addition, he said next year's recruitment will have an increased focus on the Southeast United States, from Texas to Florida.

International applications remained relatively stable, with 602 applicants compared to 605 last year.

The gender distribution also stayed fairly even with 46 percent female applicants, up from 45 percent in last year's pool.

This year's total, however, does not include the 220 applicants who applied to the University through QuestBridge, a separate application program for low-income students with which the University partnered for the first time this year.

this is awesome. hopefully they won't make it super-more selective since there is a slightly smaller applicant pool.

soooo super excited about the whole 8% less, especially only 12% for engineering... idk sounds good to me esp bc i'm female :)

but the dream thing... AHHH i dreamed a little less than a month ago that i got into penn and i was incredibly angry when i woke up... bc that of course meant it wasn't true :(

just tossing this out there but i had this dream where i went to school and like people were really happy to see me but suddenly like no one even knew me and like i didn't exist.

it was freaky.

but yea, i guess if you look at this decrease that way, it does look. hopefully it won't jeopordize any of us. 11 more days people.

I'M FREAKING OUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!

Seriously though if I don't get into Penn, I'll be so sad. I will be like completely lost. That dream is pretty funny prophet. Are you ready for the decision?

ARE YOU?!

Haha, jk. But seriously, aren't like you nervous a little bit, too? I'm at the edge of my seat!!!!!

to be completely honest, not really. i mean i was -- but there's a time where you just let everything go. i'm more anxious just to hear from penn than an acceptance as of right now. but obviously, a call here, a dream there may change that mindset.

but i think you should relax. don't be worried too much. if you don't get into penn, you can still go to oxford. sadness will never leave us alone, but you've got to make the best out of everything.

so don't be too stressed. if you're around 94% nervous, i'd say you cut down on your sugars, fats, and heavy lifting -- because you want to bring it down to preferably 23%.

good luck.

after reading about everyone freaking out about getting the letter, i suddenly became ridiculously anxious too but luckily i've calmed down a bit since then lol... but if i don't get in i'm thinking i'll be extremely sad for a bit and then get really really angry haha but if i do get in, i'll most likely scream and run around the house with excitement.

i do think it's pure evil for us to receive the decision on a monday though. its gonna be a long week for those of us who don't get in...

undergrad enrollment by school from this Penn fact sheet:
Penn: Facts and Figures
....and dividing by 4 to calculate class size by school

the percentage breakouts of ED apps provided in this morning's article:
Early decision applications drop 8 percent | Interactive Feature - News

....and ASSUMING 48% of each school's class enrollment would be accepted via ED,

I calculated the following projected ED acceptance rates by school:
CAS 37%
SEAS 45%
Wharton 21%
Nursing 81%
Total 34%

as the calculated total is greater than the 30% target mentioned in the article, the above projections are probably overstated. May not be too far off, though the Nursing number looks exceptionally high. Perhaps the inclusion if Questbridge numbers, not currently in the ED app number reported, accounts for the bust between what was said in the article (48% of class in total with 30 acceptance....doesn't add up to 3610 apps) and my math.

PapaChicken did you use the figures provided by each individual school? I found the average entering class size statistics on the websites of each school in the admissions section under FAQ. For instance, it says that about 500 applicants matriculate at Wharton each year, so that gave me a 23% admission rate ED for Wharton (though, as you mentioned, QB would bring it down slightly). Not a big deal, but I thought you should know. :)

nj-- no, I used total school enrollment figures on this fact sheet (for Fall 2008 enrollment):
Penn: Facts and Figures
which puts Wharton at 1866. Who knows which one is right, but they are pretty close.

The more important finding of your analysis technique (which is brilliant, you should be accepted!) is revealing the acceptance rate disparity between the schools. I have found very little hard data over the past few years to enable digging this deep. Yes, we all knew Wharton's acct rate was much lower than the others, but this analysis, even as simple as it is, adds some clarity IMO.

Oh, come to think of it, I didn't know no one tried it before haha. I was trying to find out back in October for SEAS (and couldn't), so that article released today on the DP was a godsend. Thanks for the compliment. :)

things are looking so good all of a sudden. can't have a bad friday -- i can't do it.

I KNOW!!!!

Whatever. I'm sure we can all get in! It will be like a CC-Ruled campus. But this is still kinda scary that they will be able to make decisions so early! I just sent in something for supplementary a few days ago!!!

PENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol. a "cc-ruled campus." competition would be stiff.

So we're going to put up the official Official ED thread when? I'm assuming it should be done at like 12 on Friday or maybe earlier? We don't want it cluttered anyway...
