Rejected.
SAT 2340 - 800, 800, 740 (one sitting).
3.85+ UW 4.3+ W.
Lots of APs, great ECs and letters of rec.
Disappointed but obviously in good company. Stats on this thread are really impressive.
Sincere congrats to all who got in!

^^^ Ooops. English major, white female.

Just got off the phone with one of the admissions officers. He said that they rec’d over 7000 apps for 390 spots. My take is that they want a varied class - they tend not to take too many from California. Daughter was rejected. We were surprised because of her high scores (2300 single-sitting), GPA (4.45) and incredible ECs and letters of rec. Personally, I think the downside for her is that she is a White Female Californian with no “hardships.” They’re looking for a more “colorful,” varied conglomerate. So far she has been accepted at UCLA, UCBerkeley, UCSD, UCSB, UCDavis, UCIrvine (all with Regents Scholarships), USC with a Trustee Scholarship, William and Mary with a Murray Scholarship, Scripps with a Presidential Scholarship, and likely letters from Yale and Dartmouth. We’re waiting for Harvard and Stanford…

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Essays (subject and responses): CA Essay was about the way my parents’ divorce affected me; I’d say it was pretty good. Supplement essay was about a choir trip that mainly focused on dance music in the station wagon I was carpooling in; it was a decent essay, but it was rushed and it read like it (I thought). No one read either of my essays. I’m a bit personal when writing on sensitive topics and the supplement essay was just too rushed.

I feel like my interview (for which I had to drive three hours away) was really good and I feel like my interviewer probably helped to get me in. My stats are pretty good, and I’m pretty diverse in my EC’s. I hope those who didn’t get in get in somewhere great, and I hope to possibly see the rest at Pomona!

EDIT: Manarius, I feel the same way. My parents are middle class, but FinAid makes Pomona entirely affordable.

wow…the stats on this thread in particular are pretty stunning. i’m frankly kind of surprised i got in. i’m a bit too tired to do the whole template, but a quick summary would be white male 1600/2370 top-13% upstate New York bad public school prospective mathematics major w/ ballet, cello, MUN, Litmag, and a music radio show as my main ECs, great recs, decent essays, a handful of 5s, and apparently a fair amount of luck.

i’m 7/7 with decisions so far and waiting on more this week. realistically the decision right now (w/ colleges that i’ve been accepted too) is uchicago vs. swarthmore vs. pomona. it’s a tough one.

I think it helped a lot that I was deferred from ED 1, because I was awarded Rotary Student of the Month for my city in February, and got first alternate in a very competitive region for a cello competition, and was able to include this in a letter to Pomona. Otherwise, I’m not sure if I would’ve gotten accepted. Anyway, congrats to all those who got in, good luck to those waitlisted, and my condolences to those rejected :)

rejected, but it’s fine bc i got in to my first choice LAC! (haverford)

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I know Pomona places a lot of weight on the interview and this was my worst one. The guy had a Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard and he asked the hardest questions… it was so stressful. I won’t be pursuing the waitlist.

[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t read it, but since he had to write 350+ recs, I’d say it was pretty cookie cutter.

Honestly, I think it was because I was another white girl from California. Pomona was my only rejection (out of 19 schools), I got an early letter from Dartmouth and I got into Northwestern’s very selective Medill School of Journalism. I’ll be attending Scripps next year with a half tuition scholarship, and I couldn’t be happier. Pomona’s a great school, but students there don’t get as much of a sense of the consortium as at other schools. For instance, Freshman dorms themselves are at the farthest corner from the other colleges. According to people from various schools there, it’s “The four collegs and Pomona”. Still a great school, but a different atmosphere that isn’t what I’m looking for (especially for hte price tag!)

I’m really not the grade-monger type at all, but I still got into this school… What I took away from the experience is that if you really want to get into Pomona (and you should, it’s amazing here) you have to show what kind of person you are, and how you’d fit into the community.

Which is not to say grades aren’t important. Don’t slack off.

Good luck!
