Keane, I went up 150 points from 590/740 by going through the Blue Book CR sections and analyzing what I got wrong. I also spent some time studying vocabulary and happened to get lucky and run into words I knew.

Good luck.

Keane- there is no secret to success for SAT. In my opinion, the "SAT study guides" are useless past understanding the structure of the SAT and learning some test tricks. However, there are ways to significantly improve your SAT score.

I improved improved from 610-720 in CR and 640-800 in writing by relearning the English language. In other words, vocabulary and a bunch of writing (journal, bunch of essays, etc). I would recommend you reading Strunk and White before your next test. If you have time and are truly committed, try Zinsser's On Writing Well.

It's what I did. Best of luck. And another thing, do not get obsessed with the SAT. It's one score and your goal for studying should not be "I need 100 higher in CR for Stanford"; rather, it should be "what can I learn and how can I improve myself?" Happy studying =)

Like jazzman said, Strunk and White is a wonderful text if you want to learn more about proper English grammar and word usage. It's very well regarded and also quite short, so it's an easy read. I can't admit to having read all of it, but I have a copy and have flipped through the pages, and it's definitely worth purchasing whether you want an increase in EITHER CR or Writing or simply want to be a better writer.

Well said, Amb3r, well said.

Everyone should own a copy of Strunk and White. That and a pocket dictionary. Helps wonders.

Oh, and hope everyone is using freerice.com for vocabulary!

CR 720
M 680
W 710

It definitely surprised me that CR was my best, but this was my first time and my scores were generally higher than I expected them to be. The nice thing about these scores is that they'll be very easy to raise, since I practically didn't study at all aside from knowing what the questions are like. I'm a little disappointed, though, that my math score is a 680 while the others are in the 700s.

CR: 680
Math: 780
Writing: 760

1460/2220 (1460/2230 superscore)

over the course of a year:
CR: +80
Math: +10
Writing: +70
Total: +160

did you have your admission ticket and are you sure that you put all the information on the booklet correctly? if you did, then maybe your proctor messed up or something.

The site shows that I took the test on Oct 2007, they're just 'unavailable' and they want me to check back after Nov 2.

good job danielcarp. its weird how your reading is the highest with math in the middle and writing the lowest. usually it seems like the reading and writing scores go together.

Can you explain my CR 550 and W 750 :)

Thanks duper & jazz for your input. I have a week (less than) to study for the SAT And with ap classes and tests and such it will be a bit more difficult. I got a 720 on CR on my first SAT last March hoping to get close to an 800.

CR: 790
M: 750
W:730

i have no idea how i got a 790 in critical reading. its usually my worst when i take practice tests, but i guess reading NY times editorials paid off
previous:
CR: 710
M:710
W:680

CR: 700
M:700
W: 690

Pretty consistent I guess.

Haha I find this funny...

CR: 620 (-70)
M: 800 (+70)
W: 710 (+70)

Wow I blew that reading section. I completely zoned in the middle of one of the sections and in another section a big bug came a walked across my test resulting in me freaking out and trying to get it off without drawing attention to myself. HAha a least both of those sections were on critical reading so my other two sections were both good.

Super score= 2200
And Im pretty happy :)

W - 650
M - 710
Cr - 800

1510\2160

m: 800
W:800
CR: 650 (stupid vocab)

2250 im done with SATS! yay 250 point increase without studying 1 bit!

It's my first time.

CR-660
Math-780
Writing-600

My essay sucks. Only got 7. I wouldn't believe this.

It was my first time taking it as a junior last month...

CR- 640
Math- 730
Writing- 730

I was joyfully surprised at my essay score (10). I seriously expected a 7....
And as for CR, I am just devastated.

When reading NY times/ The New Yorker to gain reading skills, do you guys analyze the texts or just absorb the information? What approaches do you take when reading?

You're actually trying to overanalyze the analysis of reading materials. Just relax read as you normally would. If you're weak in sentence structure or grammar, or consistently use faulty expressions/idioms, take note of correct examples that you come across. If you're impressed by certain sentence structures, expressions or style, take note of those too.

I found October's curve quite interesting, almost everyone I know who's done the SAT before increased by atleast 100-200 points. Also by looking at this thread most of you guys increased your scores greatly.

Hope November 3rd's SAT is as lenient as October 6th's.

ls47xx, when I'm reading the NY Times or anything else that is well written, I just ask myself "What is he trying to tell me?," "Why is he writing this?"

It's become inveterated in your mind and you'll find yourself asking these questions as you go through the CR passages.

Good luck!

CR: 800
M: 730
W: 800
1530/1600 - 2330/2400

I was quite :-) to see that my scores (esp. math) went up this time around (previous scores were 730 CR, 650 M, 790 W from April '06). So glad I don't have to shell out any more SAT $!

230 pt increase in one sitting
from 590 to 690 CR
590 to 660 M
590 to 650 W
