[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Courseload (hardest of anyone at my school, I’m certain.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My passion for science and medicine, as well as that I actually am somewhat related to my tribal heritage. Obviously not good enough.
[] Weaknesses: GPA GPA GPA GPA.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: SubPar GPA is the only thing I can really think of.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It seems to me like they really care a lot more about grades than they let on. obviously, because it is the Ivy League, but I guess mine just weren’t good enough. It seems like they’d rather you took 5 AP’s and have all A’s than take 10 AP’s and make 4 A’s and 6 B’s
[/ul]

I dont know how to do the bullet thing… :S seriously I tried.

Decision: Rejected

[] ACT: 35
[] APs (including this year’s): Calculus AB: 3, I’m taking 8 tests this year thanks to independent study (I am the first at my school to do this), but I didn’t know until my applications were in, so I was able to notify a few, but not all colleges
[] IBs (including this year’s: None
[] Senior Yr Courseload: Heavy-the two other AP classes (English Lit and Physics) offered besides the one I have already taken, Speech, Apologetics, Government/Economics, Band, Spanish 3…at my school, that is a really heavy load
[] Number of Apps from Your School: for all colleges I applied to except Davis (2 others), LA (1 other), Berkeley (1 other), and Pepperdine (1 other), there was no one else who applied. They are smart…but not very ambitious.

[] Strengths: SAT scores, at least one essay on each application, interviews

[] Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: Sophomore and Junior year GPAs. They were lower compared to my 1st, 2nd, and 7th semesters: 4.0 weighted.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: THE ABSOLUTE WORST PART OF THIS ENTIRE PROCESS WAS WAITING FOR UC IRVINE FOR A MONTH JUST TO BE REJECTED. Hehe. On the other hand, I gave UC San Diego a call and they gave me the exact reason I was rejected because they could pull up my file and look at it. It was GPA by the way. And yes, the “chart” of point distribution is valid.

I knew what I was getting myself into, so I’m cool with it. If you need help with preparing for your application or college or whatever, PM me and I’ll be happy to help. I wish I had had some help. Perhaps I would have pushed my GPA a bit more.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:

* SAT I (breakdown): 2130 - 700 W/740 CR/690 M (ouchhh)

 • SAT II: 800 M-II, 760 US History, 690 Literature (ouch again…)
 • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
 • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/76
 • AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (5), APES (5), APLang (4), Psych (5), Calc AB (5)
 • Senior Year Course Load: 5 AP - Music, Lit, Euro, Bio, Stats, 2 Honors - Span 3 and 4
 • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NM Finalist, a few local music awards, a few writing ones.

Subjective:

* Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Beta Club (President), Newspaper (Editor), LitMag (Editor & Consultant), Go Green (Coordinator), tutoring (founder & president), piano, choir (Student Director & Accompanist), lots of volunteer work… other stuff.

 • Job/Work Experience: restaurant work
 • Volunteer/Community service: lots and lots. Most devoted to weekly elementary tutoring.
 • Summer Activities: mortgage internship last summer, work and planning activities with friends 2 summers before
 • Essays: Strange one for CommonApp. Very personal one for “Person who influenced you” for Princeton. My short responses weren’t too bad.
 • Teacher Recommendation: Good. Both know me very well: are advisors for Newspaper and LitMag as well as my previous English and US History teachers. I’m almost like a co-worker to them. Except one teacher misspelled my name…
 • Counselor Rec: No idea. Good, I hope. She’s completely new and quite clueless, but she’s nice and wants the best for me.
 • Additional Rec: none… I took it seriously when they said they didn’t require more than asked for…
 • Interview: Went very well, though it was the strangest one I had. He kind of monologued for a while, then prompted me with a question and let me monologue, then told me to ask questions. I got him started on economics though, and said something that caught his attention, which was fun =)

Other

* State (if domestic applicant): NC

 • School Type: trashy public
 • Ethnicity: Asian
 • Gender: Female
 • Income Bracket: 70k-85k
 • Hooks: none?

Reflection

* Strengths: My transcript is not bad, the interview went well (if that counted at all), and I worked hard on my essays (not to mention all of high school…).

 • Weaknesses: The fact 24,000+ people applied in this whacked-up year. My CommonApp essay is a little kooky… ECs are generic, but they’re what I love, so what can I do? Maybe SAT was lower than a lot of folks on CC, but it went down when I retook so I moved on with my life.
 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: High school has been my time to bloom in interests and involvement and I hope it showed in my application. Waitlisting is much further than the rejection I was prepared for!

General Comments: I LOVE YOU UNC!

Best wishes to everyone! You deserve all the good things that will come to you.

Subjective:

* Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Academic Decathlon (Captain). UIL Academic Team (Captain). NHS, Mu Alpha Theta (members) Youth Group (Teen Life Leader), Club Soccer, Piano - 10 years.

 • Job/Work Experience: N/A
 • Volunteer/Community service: Maybe 50 hours total outside of church work. I didn’t mention this except for my work at church.
 • Summer Activities: Harvard Summer School last year (organic chemistry), AP U.S. History the year before in summer at Rice, Honors Pre-Calc at Rice before that, Honors Geometry before that.
 • Essays: I thought they were pretty good. So did my parents.
 • Teacher Recommendation: Excellent. My 4 year A.D. coach wrote one, my Honors Chem/AP Chem teacher wrote the other.
 • Counselor Recommendation: Probably it was just Okay. My counselor respects me for taking a hard courseload, but doesn’t like that I rarely visit/pushed some mandatory classes till senior year, etc. The rec was probably good in subject matter but meh in tone.
 • Additional Rec: None.
 • Interview: Wonderful. We talked about Harvard Summer School, then about A.D, and he was really impressed at my state championship. Then we talked about student life at Princeton, then he asked my for help on Calculus. Then we talked about UIL and piano, and soccer.

Other

* Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes - denied

 • Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
 • State (if domestic applicant): Texas (but we’re not permanent residents, so I’m still international)
 • Country (if international applicant): England/Nigeria
 • School Type: Public/Residential.
 • Ethnicity: Black
 • Gender: Male.
 • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (kind of, but i dunno if URM status applies to internationals).

Reflection

* Strengths: Test scores. Class load. Teacher Recs. Team and Individual State Championships.

 • What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Explaining how high school (the class load and Academic Decathlon) has helped me evolve into a person who enjoys life outside of just math and science - how having to study for 10 subjects in Decathlon helped me see how all fields are related and how the current high school system, where there is a wide variety of mandatory classes helped me broaden horizons, etc. It sounded less corny when I actually wrote it, trust me.
 • Weaknesses: My grades. Lots of Bs, especially in sophomore year.
 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that the mixture of school, decathlon and church, and soccer made me look well rounded. Plus I painted myself as a person who loves to learn and who learns from my mistakes well. I don’t really know.
 • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Stanford, Harvard, MIT waitlisted. Rice, CalTech, Yale, Columbia Rejected. Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Cornell, UT, Baylor, Berkeley accepted.

[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics, AP Eng, AP Calc BC, Digital Imaging, French 4, Govt/Econ

[] Volunteer/Community service: ~400 hours, hospital work, summer camps
[] Summer Activities: basically answered above. plus a lot of travel
[] Essays: i really really liked the quote one, and wrote a fairly solid engineering essay

[] Strengths: GPA, SATs, essays
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Strong interest in engineering, as a girl
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars. I enjoy my sleep and didn’t bother doing everything. Also I don’t have major awards, I’ve never done a math/science competition in my life.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I love Princeton! I feel they really care about the applicant as a person. For example, if I applied to Stanford, it’s a huge school and they’d just take a checklist and start tallying all your awards/extracurriculars/scores/etc…and there’s no way I can stack up against those geniuses. I honestly feel really lucky.
[*] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at all the Ucs, Applied to 6 privates…accepted Duke, Caltech, Princeton, rejected at Yale, MIT, and Harvard. Don’t care though, Princeton is my first choice :D. Congrats to everyone!
