Official Princeton Rd Decisions

You guys all seem like smart people. Interpret this for me: I applied ED and got deferred. I got the letter like 3 days after everyone else in my area ( i live in NYC). I thought this was some kind of post office fluke. Now I'm sitting here, April 3rd, and i have no letter. That's annoying enough, but how bout the fact that a girl in my building (SAME ADDRESS! JUST DIFFERENT FLOORS), got her letter yesterday and she was rejected. What do i make of all this? it's so irritating trying to guess if this is a good thing, a bad thing, or neither. Any insight?

you will be waitlisted.

anonymous the idea that you would say something like "im really starting to believe that adcoms know where we belong." better be a joke.

I think in princeton's case, the adcoms are really starting to believe that diversity is more important that having the best and the brightest. How else do you explain white kids being rejected from pton but being accepted to yale, dmouth, amherst, williams, harvard, etc, like one person whom i saw being accepted to all of those.

At this rate, white's will soon become the URMs, and not just at princeton.

Biggz4, were u a recruit for fencing?

Hey guys, I'm in the class of '07 (and I'm procrastinating problem sets, go figure), and I just thought I'd share this article that our class president sent us the other day. If you've already decided to go, fantastic, and you can use this as ammo against one of our peer institutions, and if you haven't already decided to come - you should, and read this.

<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050329/ap_on_re_us/unhappy_at_harvard_1%5B/url%5D">http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050329/ap_on_re_us/unhappy_at_harvard_1</a></p>

I don't know I hear alot of people saying they were rejected by Princeton, accepted by Yale or Harvard, and then saying that those were better choices for them anyway. For me, I was rejected from Harvard, Yale, and MIT, but Princeton truly is the better fit. There are so many factors they take into account such as maybe the diversity helps them produce better and brighter? (I hope that isn't true) It is hard to say from this point why an individual was accepted or rejected, because there are so many factors. And yes sometimes the gifted individual gets the short end of the stick for reasons out of his/her control. People hate how Asians are discriminated against in college admissions, but then they go to a college such as Berkeley and complain that there are too many asians. Please explain that to me. If it were up to me, I'd expand the class sizes so everyone who deserves it can be accepted.

a) No one "deserves" anything in this process. That mindset is what sets people up to feel cheated at the end of the day.

b) If you would really destroy Princeton's main selling point - that is, the intimate enviroment, tight-knit community, and small class sizes - then I desperately hope that things are never "up to you."

I feel sorry for those who didn't get in*, but I don't think meaningless rhetoric is the answer, either.

(* I haven't gotten my decision yet.)

I have similar stats to fiveminutesaday, but...
Decision: REJECTED (I want to cry, but I suspected this)
Stats:
SAT: 1320 (740M 580 V)
SAT IIs: 800(mathIIC)/ 760(Chem)/740(Phys) and 600 Writing
GPA: 3.8
Rank: 2/620
AP's: have and am currently taking total of: 13 AP classes some 3's here and there passed all but one. Senior schedule: 6 AP classes
Other stats:
A few National awards in Mu Alpha Theta
qualified for AIME, Brown Book award...
1200+ community service hours
Lots of EC's in Anchor Comm. Service club, Engineering club (1st in region), SECME (some awards).
Subjective:
Have done research at a university's chemistry lab .. had to self study some organic chem.
Only person in my school to qualify for SW semifinalist.. in at least 6 years .. maybe ever.
Essays: (+,-) they were both really heartfelt and one explained family situation (both parents work at night and irregular schedule), the other was kind of intellectual, but in the end I realized I had made some stupid grammar errors(rushed).
Teacher Recs: 1 i didn't see, the other said I was one of the best he's had in 31 years.
Counselor Rec: Superb
Hook (if any): Siemens Westinghouse Semifinalist for research project in chemistry, URM
State or Country: Florida
School Type: Public
Ethnicity:Hispanic
Gender: Female
major strength/weakness: Strength-outgoing, Weakness- scores
why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: low verbal scores
Other Factors: Interview: did not go so well,he seemed to think my verbal was too low. I was trying to tell him that's one of my only weaknesses and have been taking AP lit, and improving my vebal, but it didn't really seem to matter, maybe I shouldn't have addressed it at all? I emphasized all the other stuff I've done but since he was an english major, he seemed to think i would have to struggle there.
I'm a URM also (Hispanic girl) and I was applying as intersted in both chemistry and chemical engineeirng

it hurts.. it was my first choice, but oh well MIT rocks anyway!

You're right. I wrote meaningless rhetoric. The last sentence was more out of sympathy for superb applicants that got unlucky than anything else.

However I disagree about statement "a". There ARE people who deserve something and there ARE people who are cheated at the end of the day. I'm too lazy to cite specific evidence, but you must know people that didn't get in where you thought they should have gotten in, and people who got in where they shouldn't have gotten in (and I don't mean legacies, URMs, etc. I mean people notorious for cheating, for instance. people who submitted music CDs which they did not create, people who can't pass a test without cheating.)

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, one of the problems that I've seen is that many, many kids seem to feel that they've "earned" the Ivy League - which creates a sense of entitlement and ultimately, dissapointment. To deem the Ivy League something one "earns" seems to make effort the only criterion for admissions, when actaully everything from race to sense of humor can play a part.

The only people who are "cheated" at the end of the day are those who were too smug to apply to any safeties, because they've "earned" the Ivy League.

At least in my limited real-life experiences, I've never seen a cheater go far. Maybe I put too much faith in the college admissions process ;)

Well I'm deciding not to go to Princeton just because of personal reasons. However, I do know that I was accepted because I was a URM, but I also did offer a lot to the campus. I did visit Princeton, and ugghh HATED it. Practically no diversity, which is really important to me. I know that with all of the really good schools there's not gonna be so much diversity but geez, also don't want to struggle all 4 years. Anyways, I think I'm better suited for Northwestern! Go Wildcats!

That's not true at all about Princeton... I don't know where you got that from. Princeton's admitted class is only about 58% white (less than Harvard or Yale), and Princeton is rated by US news as a more diverse campus than Northwestern...

That was the impression I got when I visited..sorry :(

hmmm interesting post 5minaday
i also visited pton, and LOVED it. I thought the student body was really vibrant. there seemed to be all sorts of people overthere. anyway, im not going to try to convince you to go to pton lol. if you like NW, im really glad for you ;). im sure you'll have a great time.

btw, Go Tigers! lol

I didn't mean to say you got in only because of that .. I'm pretty sure of every ethnicity there's a best of applicants and you were probably it. Well i wish you the best at NW.. I would 've really liked P-ton but I guess ur right, it might have been a struggle, but then again most competitive universities are somewhat challegning.

challenging*

Actually Princetonguy, according to U.S. News and World Report 2005 Edition, Princeton is 64% White, 13% Asian, 8% Black, and 6% Hispanic. Harvard is 60% White. However, to me the percentages don't mean anything, its about the feel I get from the school. Just wasn't feelin' P-ton!

Yeah, I understand. Just to let you know, though, those stats are old. The stats for the most recent admits (which better reflect princeton now, because of the new admissions dean) can be found here:

<a href="http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S11/23/04G18/index.xml?section=topstories%5B/url%5D">http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S11/23/04G18/index.xml?section=topstories</a></p>

Oh ok thanks!

Just visit one more time before you make such a choice. Princeton is on a whole level above NW. Bad day when you visited maybe? I worked in Princeton's engineering department over the summer, and I didn't feel there were many white people at all. Honestly maybe 1/3 of the people there were black, including the professor, some of his assistants, and students.

Yeah I know its an awesome school. However, they're both good schools, sure Princeton is an Ivy and at the top of the rankings but I don't decide based on that. It might be stupid, but thats just how I am. (stubborn lol)
