***Official Princeton University 2014 Decisions Thread***

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 730 CR, 800 M, 730 W (2260 overall)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: 800 Chinese w/ Listening, 770 Molecular Biology, 730 U.S. History, 800 Math II
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.04 weighted (.5 weight on AP/Honors classes) can’t be bothered to calculate unweighted
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5-10% ish
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (5), Chemistry (5), U.S. History (5), Macroeconomics (5), English Language and Composition (5), Spanish Language (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus BC, Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP Statistics, AP European History, Modern Literature (Honors English)
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction… but that’s not really a big deal
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity swimming all four years, Habitat for Humanity (president), National Honor Society, Piano (various awards), and some other sports
[] Job/Work Experience: Bus monitoring (Head BM this year), various lifeguarding hours, summer camp swim instructor (2008)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Habitat for Humanity - about 60 hours of builds as well as other fundraising. Also some NHS hours
[] Summer Activities: Stanford U High School Summer College (2009), worked as a swim instructor at a summer day camp (2008)
[] Essays: Common App essay on Harry Potter (:D) basically saying that generalizing people into categories causes problems and how it’s important to recognize that everyone has a unique personality. Was a bit less cliche than it sounds here. Princeton Supplement Essay was on trying to figure out where ‘home’ is since I move around a lot. Again, it was more eloquent than I’m making it sound.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I’m hoping it was really good, although I never read it.
[] Counselor Rec: I know him pretty well, so probably good
[] Additional Rec: Ditto
[li] Interview: It took me almost a month to even schedule my interview because my interviewer took like a week to respond to each of my emails. I don’t know, she didn’t seem all that invested in it to be honest.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): I’m not sure if I’m a domestic or international applicant. I live in Tokyo, but I’m an American citizen and originally from Princeton. Lived in NY and NC as well.
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Private, international (on the American curriculum). ~140 seniors in the graduating class
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: I’d rather not say
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): “International” meaning that I’ve lived overseas… but not much else. I’m pretty sure that being Chinese works against me. I kind of have legacy I suppose… both of my parents went to grad school at Princeton - but Princeton hates its grad students :P
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Pretty well-rounded - decent test scores, GPA, ECs
[] Weaknesses: I’m nothing special. There are thousands of people just like me who probably applied - being well-rounded is really boring to admissions officers, I feel like.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don’t know. Princeton was one of the Ivies I thought I had a shot at, so while I’m bummed, it’s kind of like getting hit in the face. You cry a little even if it doesn’t really hurt. I think I’m going to take the waitlist spot, but I don’t really want to still be guessing about my colleges come May 1.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UChicago, Northwestern, NYU Stern, UNC Chapel Hill, Carnegie Mellon, and Santa Clara w/ full scholarship. Waitlisted at Princeton, UPenn, and Duke. Rejected from Stanford, Cornell, and Columbia.

[/ul]General Comments:
Ah well. Looks like I’m headed to UChicago! Congratulations to everyone who got into Princeton - you better rep the Class of 2014 well  Condolences if you didn’t get in and really wanted to. I know what that’s like because Stanford was my #1 forever and it was horrible getting rejected there. You will find your way and what’s meant to be will be. Good luck, everyone! I truly hope everything works out for all of us.

Decision: Accepted

[] Strengths: Nada
[] Weaknesses: Objective stats were definitely not up to par.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The Admissions officers were obviously playing bingo cards to decide on who got in or rejected etc. My Bingo card must have been accidentally stapled to someone else’s. This someone else got in and my bingo card slipped itself into the admitted students’ pile.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think they liked the fact that I am a very “globally aware” person, as I have been living in a country that is extremely diverse. In addition, I have strong grades in my transcripts, and a lot of involvement in the school (which makes up for the lack of volunteer/job opportunities in this region)
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: rejected Harvard, waitlisted Yale, accepted Stanford, Columbia, U Penn, Cornell, Duke and a number of others

[/ul]General Comments: Completely shocked. Did not anticipate acceptances from so many places! I really don’t know how this happened. I am just… Shocked.
To those accepted- Amazing job. I hope you have a great experience (Princeton or elsewhere).
To those waitlisted- Stay strong. People DO get bumped up!
To those rejected- Don’t worry, you are still an amazing student with an amazing personality, and you deserved to get in just like every one of us!

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Fair (silver medalist; president of Math Club); Mathlete (I suck lol); Model U.N. (committee chair; some Best/Distinguished Delegate awards at the beastier conferences on the East coast); Mock Trial (captain & president; ranked 4th in county from being dead last 3 years ago); Varsity Track & XC (captain; some medals at the more competitive invitationals & such); School Newspaper (Editor-in-Chief, winner of a few major awards); Pit Orchestra section leader (violin); Lotsa awards for Piano w/ some at national level (>15 awards total); and a few more things that would only attract lulz here
[] Job/Work Experience: Counselor at summer camp for high-achieving students (in Harlem); side business of repairing headphones (I only mentioned this in the interview, dunno if it counted.)
[] Volunteer/Community service: ESL teacher; Sunday School teacher
[] Summer Activities: reading??? (and work) I think my short answer to this was pretty funny, imo.

[] Income Bracket: $140,000+ (but single parent who pays full sticker price for bro’s tuition, which is around $18,000; some pretty heavy-duty mortgages; supports approx. 12 relatives in Haiti => the money is stretched quite thin)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM; Haitian is even bigger bonus??
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:I don’t know. I was so sure I would be flat-out rejected. There are so many amazing people here, and the fact that the admissions committee was gracious enough to offer me admission tickles me pink.
[] Weaknesses: See everything above.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted because of luck and God’s blessing. Nothing less, nothing more.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was waitlisted at FALE, haha. Again, they’re building a class. And I guess I didn’t have what they were looking for. It doesn’t hurt that my interview sucked for them, too. I was also accepted at: Columbia (John Jay Scholar), Harvard, University of Chicago, Macaulay Honors College @ Hunter, St. Johns University (Honors), Hampton, Howard, Georgetown SFS, and American University Honors.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Good Luck!! Don’t give up. Ever. People looked at me pityingly when I told them where I was applying, but it worked out in the end. Even if you spaz in the few days before and rack up >300 posts in 3 days because you’re terrified (like I was), soldier on. If you don’t go to Columbia, you’ll undoubtedly get to go somewhere else that’s just as good. God has a plan for you, and it’ll be fulfilled wherever you go.
On a side note, I was set on attending Macaulay Honors this fall. Now I’m hopelessly confused.
