[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): anti-hook for being ORM!
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: art. grades/score.
[] Weaknesses: **TY, *ty essays. I was so burned out I ended up turning whatever in and wanted to kick myself so hard after a month or so. Not much extracurriculars either. They could probably see that I was a passive follower, not a leader.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See above reasons.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted into dartmouth, waitlisted at columbia and princeton, re-jected from brown and yale.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: It’s funny how un-disappointed I am. I dreamt about Yale since eighth grade. I thought I was going to cry for hours if I got rejected, but I hardly teared up when I saw it and felt okay instantly afterwards. I have a lot to say but I think getting rejected was for the best. I am going to shoot for Yale for my graduate school… getting rejected definitely gave me a goal to work towards to, and also brought my ego a notch down. I feel that I would’ve become intolerably haughty if I had been accepted. I believe all worked out to be the best. I can confidently say that I am content… well, 99.9% content. I’m secretly wishing Princeton will take me in. hehe.

Decision: Rejected

[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Mexican
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Middle
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Success in music, high level math and science classes, especially as minority (hispanic female in STEM fields)
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores…wish they could have been higher!
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Such a great pool of applicants, and my SATs weren’t really in the same level as that of the accepted students
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to WSU, UW, Gonzaga, Montana State, and waiting to hear from Harvard, Stanford, and Harvey Mudd. Obviously rejected from Princeton :)

[/ul]General Comments: Overall, I felt like it really could go either way. It’s easy to feel intimidated by what we read on here, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and even though I wasn’t accepted, I know I’ll have many opportunities at the school I end up going to. Congrats to everyone who made it in, and best of luck to you all! :)

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2260 (760CR 730M 770W)
[] ACT: didn’t take
[] SAT II: Phy- 700, Chem- 720, Math II- 790
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):No AP or IB, but I take the British curriculum. 7 As in O level, 4 As in AS, and now preparing for 3 A-levels and 1 AS

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nominated for international award in Academic excellence (2010), Won 3 Distinctions in CIE examinations- 1 Top of the World, 2 Top of my country
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Member of student council for three years, VP in last year, lots of writing, tutoring, some debate but many speeches, can’t recall all right now
[] Job/Work Experience: Quite a lot. Worked as a Sales promoter part time, and am currently working with my third publication/magazine as Contributing Editor
[] Volunteer/Community service: Quite a lot. Won’t say excessive but a lot. Nothing international tho.
[] Summer Activities: Working, writing, volunteering
[] Essays: This is where I feel I messed up, being a writer. Would’ve given them 7/10 and 9/10 before last night, but now they’re both 6/10!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t seen one, but the teacher assured me it was great. The second was alright, she didn’t right much about me, but ticked most in the superlatives on the evaluation form. They both loved me, so =D
[] Counselor Rec: Okayish. Actually wrote my own counselor rec XD
[] Additional Rec: From principal. Nothing short of touching and heartfelt
[li] Interview: Meh. Was ok, for me it was a wonderful experience, I don’t think the interviewer found me special or spectacular though.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): Pakistan, but expat in the UAE
[] School Type: private, but I’m the first ever to apply from my school so…
[] Ethnicity:
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: < $30k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: right now, I don’t feel like I had any XD But in any case, I felt I had the components of a good application. I worked hard, and got good results, but…
[] Weaknesses: I realise now my app was very poorly put together. I had no counselor, i was my own adviser, my own critic. Some parts feel very unprofessional to me right now, but I had too much on my plate- so it’s ok =D
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t stand out. Application seemed dull? Poor essays maybe? I’ll never know, will I?
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: here’s the real crap- NONE. Rejected from everywhere, I only applied to 5 unis in the US, and rejected from all. Not even a waitlist. BUMMER.

[/ul]**General Comments: ** So after all of the above, and much crying and frustation, I feel ok =D I want to hate all the Ivies right now, even Princeton- the love of my life, but I don’t. These schools are great, they mold wonderful individuals and provide great opportunities to youngsters like myself. I will always have deep respect for these institutions and what they stand for, and I feel genuinely excited for my fellow applicants who got in!!! And to those who didn’t like moi- it’s ok. We’ll be alright. The tough part is going to be telling the whole world that we didn’t make it, I mean this is the first time in my life I’ve faced such outright failure academically, but then we’ll have a laugh, move on, and do great things!! We wouldn’t have been worthy of even applying if we didn’t!

Good luck, and loads of best wishes to you all :)

[] Strengths: Grades, recommendations, essays. I also have a unique passion for the German language and culture, and I really highlighted this throughout my application.
[] Weaknesses: test scores (SAT in particular)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was deferred, and honestly I was expecting rejection. I really wanted to get in though and put in a lot of work to show Princeton that I wanted to go there really badly!

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): main ones is a concert i organized every year, earned total of around $120,000 during my time; directed 4-5 major productions in high school; organized a summer teaching program where we teach disadvantaged kids during weekdays the whole summer, wildly successful, had more than 100 students per summer; during gap year, studied french, went to bali where we built a school, and a lot more. these are just main ones

[] Counselor Rec: great, highlighted lots of important information, like how our school NEVER sends anyone abroad, let alone an ivy league school
[] Additional Rec: by principal, said i was perhaps the best in her 21 years

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: i think overall i was pretty solid, and i guess getting waitlisted proved just that
[] Weaknesses: SATs i guess, i can’t really say. maybe my other two recs aren’t as stellar as they ought to have been, oh and lack of solid sports
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: international admissions is extremely competitive, much more than the competition for us citizens
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: waitlisted harvard and dartmouth, rejected yale, waiting on amherst among others

[/ul]General Comments: Congrats to everyone that got in!! And to those who got waitlisted, another two long months but at least we know we meant something to them? LOL and to those who were rejected, be the next warren buffet and shove that rejection letter in their faces. everyone here is so ridiculously accomplished it’s unbelievable. just remember that colleges have their own interests in mind too.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think it must have been that others have a stronger record of service than I do. I have more than most at my school, but not the 1000+ some post here. It’s a large crowd of qualified applicants with very similar resumes; it is difficult to stand out unless you have a strong hook of some type.

Weaknesses: no research or major awards
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: writing this because I found prior posts useful and I wanted to share D’s experience to give back to CC community. Hispanic background does not hurt, of course, but I think her biggest hook is women in engineering. She is good at math but was not sure what to do with that. Spent soph summer at women engineering program and junior summer at similar program at MIT. Girls from her M.I.T. program have virtually all gotten into prestigious programs (CalTech, MIT, Stanford, Ivies). Lots of girls apply to engineering college programs but there are fewer with summer experiences which provide real evidence of this interest. If you are female soph/junior with strong math, look into these summer programs.
