[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB/BC, AP English IV (Lit & Comp), AP Comp Gov & Pol, AP Econ, online US government, AP biology, drumline, band
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): One national essay contest
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Music was my main extracurricular. Drumline and marching band for 4 years, captain my last year – about 35 hours a week. Our drumline has done really well at national competitions and is recognized as one of the best in the nation, and I did really well at a national solo competition too. I also compose – a film score I wrote won best soundtrack at ASU’s campus filmfest. And I play piano (solo, jazz band, accompanying), but I haven’t done comparatively well there – it’s more for myself. Besides music, I write for the Dallas Morning News, am in Scouts, am president of NHS, am in JWAC and competed in WorldQuest (got 3rd this year, 4th last year out of about 80 teams), and some other stuff that I can’t think of right now.
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: Scouts, NHS – will graduate with 100 hours of service. probably the weakest part of my app.
[] Summer Activities: I went to Europe twice – once with friends and once on an expenses-paid trip from an essay contest. I went to a week-long marimba workshop and geeked out about the world cup. The rest of my summers were taken up by drumline and band practice.
[] Essays: If anything got me in, it was these. Princeton-specific begain with a quote from Kerouac’s On the Road and talked about the novel, studying jazz, and how both combined to create an important part of my worldview. My common app was about directing and conducting a percussion ensemble. And my short answer was about being in a successful drumline despite being deaf in one ear.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t read either of them. One from AP English 3 teacher who I was really close to, one from AP Stats teacher who I was not as close to.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty much just echoed my application. Only caught a glimpse of it though.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[li] Interview: Nein.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes! And got a whole lot more than I expected.
[] Intended Major: Woodrow Wilson, I think. Or Econ… don’t really remember. I’m essentially undecided.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Tejas
[] School Type: Massive, ridiculously competitive public (34 NMSs this year)
[] Ethnicity: White and NA (but no tribal or cultural affiliation)
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: 120-150k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none unless you count the Native American, but I really don’t think it had an influence because I’m also white and middle-class.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, definitely. My involvement in music is pretty extensive too.
[] Weaknesses: No massive awards, not a lot of community service.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I legitimately have no idea. I guess my essays showed lots and lots of deep thought about me and everything I do, but as far as things I’ve done in comparison to the rest of the applicant pool, I’m mediocre. I was absolutely floored by all my decisions.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted: UT Austin Plan II, Fordham Lincoln Center with tuition, Harvard, UChicago, Brown, Columbia. Rejected: Yale (Deferred SCEA)[/ul]
General Comments: I’m not sure if Princeton is where I’ll end up. I still can’t believe I got in… to everyone rejected/waitlisted: you are wonderful people who will do wonderful things with your lives at other wonderful schools. and to future applicants: don’t try to be someone you’re not! Be a kid. I think they want to see that you’re mature, but you’re still a high school senior.

[] Common App Main: It was about a holiday visit to a small town bordering Burma and Thailand; how my family and I ended up pretty much just going through this flap in the wall of a plant stall to cross over from one country to another. [] EC Short Answer: Talked about my role as Head Girl/Prefect and what that involved.
[]“A few details” questions: Just genuine responses
[]“Your Voice” Extended essay: I did the topic on a person who has influenced me. I picked my best friend, and used her obsession for stones and all things quirky as my starting point. [li] What would you have done differently?: Oh gosh, I definitely would have actually studied for the SAT. And the SAT IIs. I didn’t stumble onto CC until after I had already submitted my applications, and getting a 2090 was considered really good at my school at that time… it’s full of underachievers. General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Rawr ima tiger!
**Briefly explain why you applied to Princeton : When I was little, I asked my mom where she went to for grad school to which she responded “Princeton!” Ever since then I’ve had a fascination with Princeton so needless to say, I was a little biased when the application process started. Luckily though, I found justification in my fascination (i.e. undergrad focus, small classes, gothic architecture, Rubik’s Cube Club, etc.) and got in  **

Decision: Accepted

Not much to say except that I am NOT one of those people who got a 2400 (or even a 2200) or had a perfect 4.0. (And, no, I was not a recruited athlete.)

Don’t know why I got in but I’m glad I did. Even if you don’t think you have a snowball’s chance in hell, give it a shot: Ivies are a crap-shoot. I applied to five and only got into Princeton.

Their loss I guess. :)
