-Vice President of Investment Club (1 yr)

-Teacher Assist for kid with special need (1 yrs)

-Web Game Script Business ( 2 yrs) wrote a script for a web game when I was in middle school, and sold out 500+ copies on internet at a price of 7.99 each.

-Toy Business (1 yrs) Import toys from China, and supply it to North America toy shops. I promote my business through cold mailing and it went pretty well. I make about 2000$/month for a year, but I stopped due to the change in policy.

-Hair Extension Business (1/2 yr) Import hair extension clips from China, and sell them to local Hair Salon. Just like how I run the toy business, cold mailing, cold calling, and I also created a website for it www.tobecomehairgoal.com
Didn’t do well on this one make about 600$/month, but since I do a drop shopping so no initial investment. Shut down now because too much opportunity cost, and as a high school boy I have no interest in Hair extensions.

-Online Tutoring Company( 1/2 yr + on going)CEO and founder of an online tutoring startup, so far pretty well, we have 33 employees, and over 60 clients coming from 6 different countries. I start with no initial investment, and we currently have a revenue of 10000$/month, still expending in a daily basis. Sorry to make this sounds like an advertisement, but I do want to take this opportunity and promote it, as we are always seeking for talent people to join our team. If you are interested in tutoring other online, feel free to email me or dm me for more detail (wjy421421@gmail.com). We are a legally registered company at Canada Ontario.

Before Senior Year- attended the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) at UC Davis to study biomedical sciences, the rest of the summer I studied for standardized test via Khan Academy and started learning French

Essays:
Common App (10/10): rewrote my essay like 5 times, made sure it perfectly represented me and was unique; talked about my childhood, reasons why I founded the Baile Folklorico Club at my high school, and how my perception on life changed; talked about how my club impacted my community in a positive way and how we performed in our town’s parades, cook-offs, festivals, etc. I basically highlighted my leadership skills and my cultural passion for dancing folklorico.
Supplements (9/10): for the main supplemental essay, I came up with my own prompt (using a quote from a favorite author…), in that essay I talked about my background and how I matured from prejudice and wanted to break stereotypes, it led into the quote I used beautifully and creatively; in another essay, I talked about the summer program I attended and how that month-long experience invigorated my love for science, also talked about how I almost died from appendicitis my 8th grade year which sparked my interest in the medical field; in another essay, i just briefly talked about my summers.

Recommendations:
Teacher 1 Rec (9/10) - from my science teacher of 2 years, she knows me well and talked about how I got along well with others and how she admired my work ethics
Teacher 2 Rec (8/10)- from my math teacher of 2 years, also knows me very well but had less time to write a recommendation so I don’t think it is as strong as the first teacher
Counselor Rec (10/10)- I’m pretty close to my counselor, he summed up my high school career beautifully and talked about who I am as a person and how I’ve thrived in my school/community

Interview- about 1 hr 20 minutes, I was very nervous but I gradually opened up to my interviewer and the conversation took off (phone interview), he was in his mid 40s, white male, very kind and insightful

Applied for Financial Aid- Yes
Intended Major- Molecular Biology, or Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
State-California
School Type- Large public high school from a small/poor county in southern california
Ethnicity- Hispanic/ Mexican
Gender- Female
Income Bracket: 40k for a family of 6, low-income

Hooks: URM (under-represented minority), first-generation, low-income, oldest of 4 children so I had to help my mom raise my siblings, mom got pregnant with me at 17 and her boyfriend abandoned the both of us so as a child I didn't have a father figure, etc.

REFLECTION

Strengths: valedictorian of my school, leader in my community/school, unique story, perfect grades
Weaknesses: relatively low standardized test scores (for the Ivies)
Why you think you were accepted: my essays, grades, recommendations, and personality

Rejected from: Dartmouth, Cornell, and Stanford

Waitlisted at: Columbia, Brown, UPENN, University of Chicago, and Harvard

Accepted to: Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Princeton University
received fee waivers to apply, started all applications about 2 weeks before the deadline

Suggestions/ Advice:
-take time on your essays, do NOT rush your applications
-research the schools you’re applying to so when it’s time to do their supplements, you can easily explain why their school is right for you
-please do NOT over-prepare for your interviews, my Harvard interviewer liked the fact that I was honest and humble with my responses, don’t brag and don’t memorize your responses, she said she likes people who aren’t very “practiced” (her own words)
-don’t stress out, it’s unhealthy and will show through your essays if you’re not careful enough
-please don’t let anyone stop you from applying to certain schools, even if you think they’re out of your “reach”; it doesn’t hurt to try

Good luck to all those applying next year! I hope you guys get into your dream schools!
