Official Questbridge National College Match 2010-2011

^

She is at Amherst. She originally had it ranked #3 after 2 of the non-binding other U’s, but she visited Amherst for a weekend at the very end of September. She called me from the campus and told me to go into her QB account and change the rankings so Amherst would be #1. She just knew that was the place for her when she visited. While I don’t advocate waiting until 11:59 on the submission date to push send, if you have any doubts or pending visits I would recommend waiting until a day or two before the deadline.

deerspectacles, you don’t need to send your SAT scores to QB (as far as I remember.) You self report them on your app, then you will need to send the official reports to the schools you choose. This was a couple of years ago, so maybe somebody will correct me if things have changed…

edit: just reread your post, and we might have faxed in a copy from collegeboard. The unofficial one is all QB needs, the partner schools need the official one. Just print out your score report and fax for application purposes.

okay, thank you!

i have another question too - what colleges are going to look at what applications, because they all have different things that they look at? i know that the university of chicago doesn’t look at the questbridge app but then at the same time upenn doesn’t look at the common app (when it’s through questbride at least)… so am i still going to have to write four essays for qb, one essay for the common app, and then at least one essay per supplement, and make sure that each one of them is about something different? ahhhhasdfadfsf. that’s incredibly overwhelming.
sorry if this seems confusing.

It will be hard to visit since they are all on the east coast except for one of them-
they have fly in programs but she is so busy with school it would be hard to attend i think-
Amherst looks like a great U

deerspectacles, it is perfectly acceptable for you to recycle your essays and use/and or modify your QB ones to fit the common app and supplements.

colleges won’t think i’m lazy for doing that?

No, they won’t think you’re lazy. Also, note that QB specifically chose to use some Common App prompts. QB Essay 1 is the same prompt as the Common App #5 prompt. QuestBridge Essay 2 is the same prompt as the Common App prompt #1.

^
No, absolutely not. QB says it is perfectly fine to recycle essays.

I am extremely excited and nervous after finding out about QB. I began filling out the online application today after receiving the packet in the mail. Just surfing around the web, I noticed the SAT scores for last year’s admitted students were really high…my SAT score is 740- math, 570-cr, and 610- writing. However, all my other stats seem reasonably competetive, such as: high extracurricular involvement, 4.0 gpa (4.5 unweighted), zero income, first generation immigrant, and some other factors. Should I still be quite hopeful or is a 1940 SAT score going to ruin my application?

While your score is lower than the average, remember there are those who have even higher (or lower!) scores, but were still chosen as Finalists/College Matches.

If you are unable to take the SAT/ACT again this year, then I suggest you look to what you can control like essays and talk with your teachers about letters of recommendation. Do your best work!

I am looking around for a good primer/study guide for (my D) the ACT Science section.
Do any of you know where I can find one online or can recommend any sources?

I don’t know of any primer books MSM, but my D (35) on science section said it is more of a reading section than science knowledge. Have her read through the passage thoroughly before the answers. Sorry if that is not much help, but D says answers are found in the passages.

I’m wondering if I should bother applying at all.
Here’s my deal:
I lived a dandy life with no financial hardships at all (in fact, I would have gotten NO financial aid at any institution) until April, when my dad died.
Now, we’re facing crazy financial hardship. My mom makes a little over a fifth of what my dad made. My dad had (a LOT) less life insurance than he had debt. Basically, we’re sunk, and I HAVE to get full financial aid to go to college.
However, I’m not a first generation college student, by any means. My mom has a Bachelor’s degree, and my dad had a PhD. And, like I said, I have definitely not faced a life of financial hardship until recently.
However, I have pretty good stats (4.0uw/4.7w GPA, 34 ACT, NMSF, good ECs, etc.)

So, do I even have a shot, or should I focus my energy toward an ED app instead?

I would totally apply to be a QB Finalist. If you are picked, you can opt out of the Match and list “QuestBridge Finalist” as an honor on your ED application.

The school I’m matching with (Brown) doesn’t allow QB finalists to apply ED.

You could still put it on a Regular Decision application, if your being a finalist is of concern.

Brown allows QB finalists to apply ED; I have emailed them asking that before.

I’m having some trouble making this Biographical essay 800 words. Should it be one lengthy story? Multiple stories? Or just reflections on who you are as a person?

Xavier110, what would be the benefits of doing that rather than just applying through QB?

And, according to the last row of the brown table under this Questbridge link, ([QuestBridge National College Match - Regular Decision Table for Finalists](QuestBridge)) if you are selected as a finalist, the only early process you may participate in is Quesbridge. Either the admissions person you contacted was ill-informed, or this Questbridge page is not accurate.
