Official Questbridge National College Match 2010-2011

Hey guys I have a question… I am planning to apply early action to three schools that are on my list… since I am doing the QuestBridge things should I change them to regular decision since if one gets the enchilada its a binding commitment right (kinda like early decision)?

my school is ridiculously competitive, there are something like 50 people tied for 1st in rankings. my gpa is a 3.8, but I’m only in the top 20%, will questbridge understand that? because if I was at any other school, I’d be in the top 10% like questbridge wants, it’s just that my school is crazy.

I have a financial question…

Has anyone ever gotten in with 70k flat earnings. I mean, I entered in 70,300 or something like that…and it said I was 300 dollars over and that its really rare for people to get matched with this type of income etc.

But has anyone known anyone who’s been matched with this type of income. There are 5 people in my household and my avg is fine im top 3%. my sat is 1960 but im retaking for a 2100+

so yeah, finance is my concern…do you think they’d take me. there ARE 5 people in my family…

and also, the biographical essay, how on earth do we write that one??..do we just basically talk about our life…first this then, that in each paragraph. cause the other essays are more similar to the common app which i find fine…

also. if i become a finalist and put down columbia first and dont get matched…could i still apply to columbia on my own with the common application after that? or would i have to do RD with questbridge. i dont understand what regular decision with questbridge is and how its different from RD withOUT questbridge…

am i allowed to do RD w/questbridge even if i dont get matched?

Also, if I plan to submit a noncustodial waiver, that means I don’t have to fill out the part about my father right? I can just leave it blank? It’s not like I know the info anyway. I’m also kind of confused as to how the noncustodial waivers work, I don’t submit it to QB but directly to the colleges?

Aaaaand what is first language. The language I am most proficient in is English, but it wasn’t the first language I learned.

The whole binding and non-binding school thing kind of confuses me.

Say I rank a non-binding school (MIT, for example) as my #1 choice, and a binding school (say Northwestern) as #2. If I get matched with both MIT and Northwestern, what happens?

I believe that at that point you are allowed the option to choose MIT or Northwestern (because MIT is non-binding).

Ah ok. Thanks, gaginang.

then

Whoa! Completely wrong! You can only get “Matched” to one school. In the scenario you presented, let’s assume both MIT and Northwestern chose you for the Match. You will ONLY know about MIT because it is the highest school YOU ranked. Even if somebody ranked 8 schools and all wanted them, they would only know their #1. The rest are a moot point.

Now if you would get matched to MIT, you wouldn’t know about Northwestern wanting you, so you would be deferred to RD, where they could then accept you.

^ANd that’s true even if the upper choices are non-binding? So even though they don’t require you to go, you don’t find out about the others? Hmm, interesting to know. thanks

Yes, you only are matched to one, your highest ranked that wants you. You will most likely never know about the others, although when my D was calling the admissions depts. to withdraw after her match, another adcom told her they had “matched” her as well, but she was into her #1. I think that was a fluke that we found out that she was wanted by another school as well, you won’t find that out from QB.

Uh oh! My mistake. :frowning: So I’m supposing that non-binding for a partner college like MIT just means that if you had been accepted to a place that you had applied RD , then you could choose to attend that RD’d institution?

^^^

No, it is the same as applying to any QB partner for their match, basically doing ED for 1 or more multiple schools. It gives you the advantage of being read even before “regular” ED schools. You can get “matched” to a non-binding school, and what that means is that you can either accept or just wait and see what your RD acceptances may bring.

I’m not sure what your post was asking exactly, could you clarify?

Oh wow, it seems my concept of non-binding is very different from what actually happens with QuestBridge! :frowning: :frowning: :(

My questions would be…say I were matched to non-binding Stanford through QB and got accepted to another school RD. Would I be able to have that option of choosing between the two, or would I have to take/reject Stanford’s offer and move onto waiting for RD decisions.

Thanks, that is much clearer. If you were matched to Stanford and then to 1 or 6 other QB partner schools during RD, you are free to choose whatever school you want, including non QB partner schools that you have applied to during RD. If you are matched to a non-binding school you have until May 1st to decide. Just think of the non-binding QB partner schools as non-binding ED PLUS! You can apply to many of them at once, as opposed to one ED school, or one SCEA school.

Yes you would have the ability to choose after you hear back in April. I believe that you would need to notify a non-binding school by May 1 but correct me if I am wrong.

So, to clarify, if I were to be matched to a non-binding partner college, and it was my highest ranked option, I could then choose to consider that option or other places that I have been accepted to under RD?

Absolutely, with knowing you already have a great acceptance under your belt! :)

That’s great! Thanks so much for the clarification, GA2012MOM. I was very afraid for a moment haha.

Over the past couple of years I have seen Match recipients choose different options when being matched to a non-binding school. If that school is their #1 no doubt school, they accept immediately and enjoy the heck out of the rest of their senior year. Others decide to wait till RD acceptances come in.

I just found out about questbridge a week ago. the brochure they sent me stated “qualified students can apply to our partner colleges for free via the regular admissions process, using their QB application.” If i am chosen as a finalist but not matched, but want to use my QB app to apply RD to the partner colleges, will I still be able to edit and revise my essays in the QB app before i submit it again?
I’m just not sure I will be able to turn out great essays in the less than 3 weeks I have to complete this application.
