I just thought I'd make a thread for those of us on CC who are quiz bowlers (general discussion about the current season and the like). Enjoy!

Possible discussion point: what state do you compete in and how's the competition in your local circuit?

I compete in the metro Atlanta area, and it is very competitive here!

I’m from IL here. The competition really depends on what part of the state you’re from (Chicagoland v. down state). Being in Chicagoland, the competition is a bit stiff thanks to a lot of the STEM magnet schools. The state as a whole has a rich Scholastic Bowl culture (if I may), nevertheless.

How’re the prospects of your school of making HSNCT?

I compete in the metro Atlanta area also. (though we may be in different Regions)
I’m JV. We won our region last year for JV, not so sure about this time around

I compete in the Rockford area in Illinois, and the competition here is actually very weak other than a few exceptions. We are a school of ~700 students, placing us in the large school division (2A). Although we are still one of the best teams in the area due to random/lucky power-sprees during crucial matches, we have to face off against Belvidere North (home to the almighty Dirty-D who placed second in individual scoring at the National Championships) as well as Auburn, the magnet school that placed 5 as a team at Nationals and won the NAQT State Finals (though they will be considerably weaker this year.

Oh and Gram, watch out for Loyola this year as they will be very solid, and IMSA of course (as if you didn’t know that lol). New Trier won’t be as good though, nor will Chicago Latin (obviously still above average though)

Really? Well that’s good news. What happened to New Trier? Also, is Dirty-D’s name Dylan? I think I might know who you’re talking about.

What do you guys personally tend to specialize in? So far, I’ve found myself to be a bit of a generalist, but I’m showing a lot more strength in geography and history as of recently.

I love quiz bowl! We call it the more generic “Academic Competition” in my district. I’m really looking forward to this year’s season.

Dirty-D is in fact dylan, you may know him as Golden-bellied starfrontlet on a certain forum I see you have found. I have two team mates with almost identical areas, which are science and comp math, but I’m more of a generalist with some pretty decent lit knowledge. Also my brother does fine arts because I forced him to do so.

We had a freshman last year who came out of nowhere with his comp math skills. Could finish problems in a fraction of the time most of our well-seasoned scholbowl players could. Good thing he’s participating again this year.

Our Quizbowl team is called “The Masterminds”, as if we didn’t get mocked enough…we’re also a “sport” at my school, God knows why.

I live in the Buffalo, NY, area, and competition is pretty pathetic except for our local prep school. It’s our public school against them for 1st/2nd EVERY year, the other public schools are just…sad. Willy Wonka did NOT write I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings!

^Lol a qb team with a name. Maybe I will come up with a name for mine now… and gram our comp math is normally pretty good but nonetheless I can’t stand it so I love naqt. I think we may have our first ever all man team this year since I scared the girls off. Oh and as for HSNCT we will probably qualify since we are classified as a small school so we only have to score in the upper 50 percentile at an naqt tourney lol but I’m not sure if we would go (due mostly to a poorly funded team, we can’t handle dem travel expenses.

I’m pretty sure quizbowl is technically a sport in Illinois as well.

Also, our JV team last year was not just male-only, but a good 70% were Indian.

Oh wow. We have traditionally been 110% caucasian and this year is no different. Last year I notably beat two indian kids to a question with the answer “india” which made their team crack up.

Yeah, our team has been 100% Whitey McWhite-White for all its years in existence with the exception of this past year when a Dominican girl from rural Wisconsin transferred to our school system. Go figure, a Dominican in rural Wisconsin. Our competitors are mainly African Americans or lower class whites, our prep school competitors are black, Asian and white. Not so many Asians where I live…a few (2) adopted from Vietnam at my school. Our mascot is the Redskin…we’re unintentionally racist and the fact that we’re a 99.99% white school makes it worse.

I love Quiz Bowl so much. It’s my favorite extracurricular. <3

It’s probably the most fast paced of any academic activity, thats why I enjoy it at least.

Yeah Quiz Bowl is one of my favorite extra curriculars. I compete on the Atlantic coast, and my school sends A and B team to HSNCT every years. This year I will hopefully be on B team, so I will get to go. We participate in 5-10 well known tournaments during the season, placing high at all of them. This year we are also going to try to field a team to PACE NSC. We also send teams to History Bowl and Science Bowl.

Good, our school might be getting one of the IHSSBCA grants! Moh money means moh tourneys. Hurrah.

Woohoo! You know what tournaments you are going to yet? Also, have you guys started practice yet? If so, what do you do at them?
