Don't worry...decisions come up in less than 24 hrs. I'm using a template I found on another board so people can post their decisions. I thought it was nifty...

[] Essays: I’m biased, and don’t want to sound cocky… but usually I write excellent essays, and I thought my GW ones were no exception. I won a national award from NCTE for writing, and am getting recognized for writing at the Texas state capital this weekend. My honors essay was a little off-beat, but A) was still good, I believe and B) shouldn’t really have effected my overall admission if my other essays were strong.
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent. My english teacher adored me, selected me for that national competition, and my US History teacher also loved me (he gave me his student award last year, which each teacher is allowed to give to two students).
[] Counselor Rec: I’m very close to my counselor, so I imagine at least decent.

Debate team captain. Nationally competitive debater (top 60 in country, though it’s kind of an impossible activity to rank). On board of school literary magazine. National recognition for writing (NCTE Achievement Award in Writing given to 550 students). I also did visit the school and went on a tour, so I showed legitimate interest.

I hate to sound belligerent and cocky… but I feel I’m going to come off that way. What was GW looking for? I’ve already been accepted into NYU, and I was deferred early decision at Columbia. If Columbia thinks I have a shot, and NYU has let me in… where did I go astray, George Washington?

My English teacher said that my essay was “brilliant and unique.” My ‘Why GW?’ essay was probably a little cliche and contrived. I wrote it a few hours before the deadline on my best friend’s birthday sitting in Borders.
One teacher rec was probably very good, my AP English teacher. One probably said that I struggled, but worked hard, my AP Bio teacher. My counselor rec was probably impersonal but complimentary.

[*] going to attend? No, BC and NYU higher on my list. Still waiting on Gtown, Brown, and Cornell. [/ul]

Maybe your stats were so high that they assumed that this was a safety school for you. I know admissions officers will deny that practice to the day they die, but human nature is human nature. No one likes to make an offer to someone only to be told “No.”

Outhere- GW is the only school I applied to that makes you list the other schools you are applying to and asks if you visited or not. If they saw you were applying to other schools with better reputations and thought you were using them as a backup school or you didn’t visit, then that is why they probably waitlisted you. Otherwise, I don’t see how I’m a better acceptance than you are.

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2180 (730 M, 660 CR, 790 W)
[] SAT IIs: 740 Math 1c, 670 Spanish

[] Rank: 3/380
[] Other stats: tons of extracurriculars: theatre, dance, chorus, work, student government
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I applied for a bunch of different programs at GW so they got I think 4 of my essays. I liked them… I think they were good?
[] Teacher Recs: nothing special, but they were good
[] Counselor Rec: good
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MA
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] major strength/weakness: I’m involved in a ton of extracurriculars, have good SAT scores and GPA
[] going to attend? It’s between NYU and GW. I love them both!
[/ul]

^^ Will agree with Gabester. I like to refer to it as the “Tufts Syndrome”. Indeed the school is known to have refused several extremely qualified students propbably because Tufts felt it was a second choice.
Also notice how you were not rejected but waitlisted. I think that says it all.

Ha… maybe. Doesn’t that kind of kill the idea of safety schools though? I guess that’s why they deny it, amongst other reasons. But don’t schools like GW that are GOOD but not necessarily top choice often accept top students and offer them lots of money as an incentive, especially since GW is so costly? Or were they secretly NOT need-blind and saw I didn’t submit a FAFSA and decided “well, nothing we can do to get this one.” Hmm. I’m trying not to let it get to me, but I’d just be curious what I should have worked on more. Perhaps my why GW essay was shoddy… which would make sense.

[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I have no idea why, I honestly thought I should not have any problems getting in. I understand that Elliot is the hardest school to get into but my stats are good.
[li] going to attend?
[/li]

I also don’t mean to sound cocky or anything, but I don’t understand what their reasons were for waitlisting me, I’m sure there were some but overall I thought I was a solid applicant.

Stats:[ul]

[/ul] Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Well, CommonApp was very good, I thought. But we had a bit of a family disaster six days before the deadline, and I still hadn’t written my essays, so yeah. In short, I wrote my GW essays after coming home from a funeral which was, uh… not a positive thing.
[] Teacher Recs: Should be good; didn’t read.
[] Counselor Rec: Should be good; didn’t read.
[] Hook (if any): none
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: PA
[] School Type: private, Catholic, all-girls
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] major strength/weakness:
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I thought I had a good shot at acceptance, but I never showed any true “interest” in GW. And, as stated above, my essays did not live up to my typical standard of quality. And I applied to Elliot, which I think is the most selective school.
[li] going to attend? Possibly, if taken off the waitlist. [/ul]
[/li]

Good job to all those accepted, and consolations to those rejected/ waitlisted with me!

Oh yeah, I was national merit finalist as well. Congrats to everyone who was accepted though!

Is GW known for having a bit of a strange admissions process? The only other school I’ve heard of being universally notorious for strange admissions processes was Brown, but probably in different ways.
