My friend was waitlisted with an SAT of 2330, subject tests of 800, 800, 780 (Math IIC, Chemistry, Biology M), an unweighted GPA of 4.0 (weighted 4.7something), four APs so far of 5s, and five APs in his schedule this year, as well as ongoing research in chemical engineering, class board leadership and involvement in lots of clubs, and several hours of volunteering in hospitals.

I guess it was an issue of showing interest. He applied to their accelerated medical program (and was denied admission), and although he did visit the school, maybe they didn't see him as interested in their undergraduate program because he applied to the med program.

I think the waitlists are because GWU thinks they're getting safetied.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe that kid that Poseur mentioned got waitlisted because GWU thinks he wouldn't attend anyway if he didn't get into the med program.

[] Teacher Recs: Probably said that I always try my hardest but don't necessarily get the best grades.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea- my school counselor didn't help us at all with college apps I have no idea what she could have written.
[] Hook (if any): Youngest paid campaign staffer for the Obama campaign in the area (maybe even in North Carolina?)...very interested in politics, journalism, etc. in relation to the new administration

[li] going to attend? i REALLY hope so! if i can figure out how to afford it :)[/li][/ul]

also- just thought i'd say i'm AMAZED that i got accepted and i'm so grateful that GW really does look at the whole package it seems. i cannot believe it...some of the people on this thread got denied or waitlisted that have way better grades. i live in NC and i didn't get into UNC Chapel Hill...which is much easier for in state students than GW is. the college admissions process doesn't always make sense but i'm so glad i have GW to look forward to!!!

Accepted at Columbian! I'm too lazy to do the whole format thing so here are my stats:
2200 (780 cr, 690 m, 730 w)
3.9 GPA UW
ranked 8/330
I think I had pretty good essays and I had several leadership roles throughout high school.

“i am incredibly frustrated toobecause was pretty confident that i would get in…if they reject all their top applicants, how are they ever going to increase the quality of their student population?!”

Hershey’s Kiss: The student body at GW is just fine. Thanks for your concern.
They do not reject all their top applicants- they just happened to reject you. That was a toolish thing to say. Maybe the adcoms picked up on that attitude in you app. There are lots of very high stats in the accepted group in this thread.

Here’s my take on this whole “overqualified” waitlist situation.

It simply does not make sense to claim that we were waitlisted because GW thought we would not matriculate. If that were the case, GW would be far more likely to accept such students and offer them copious sums of money. That is, after all, how fairly good, but perhaps not “amazing” (a school description which must always be in quotes) schools attract students who might otherwise elect to attend schools in the “next tier.” I know American does this - my friend, who is 11th in our class and a very competitive applicant (just accepted to U Chicago) was offered 27,000 dollars a year, despite not having applied for any sort of scholarship.

So, I’m not going to bicker about a flawed admissions process. Rather, I’m curious if anyone thinks that admissions might explain what their qualm was about me (or other interested and waitlisted applicants) if I call up to ask? If I frame it as “I was waitlisted, and I want to know what I can do to relieve your fears/doubts about my candidacy as I appeal my decision” do you think they will be cooperative?

Also, demonsword55 (merely looking at page 6 so far) contradicts the “reject overqualified” idea.

Also… perhaps GW puts a lot of weight on class rank? I notice the supposedly “less qualified” candidates have higher ranks than myself and some of the others who have been complaining. So perhaps “overqualified” is a misnomer, if GW simply places a lot of emphasis on rank.
