Official RD Decision Thread - Class of 2012

I found last year's thread (<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-william-mary/314877-official-college-william-mary-class-2011-decisions-thread.html?highlight=official%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-william-mary/314877-official-college-william-mary-class-2011-decisions-thread.html?highlight=official</a>) useful for chancing myself so I figured I'd make one for next year's applicants.

grats guys welcome to the class of 2012 with the EDers :) join the facebook groups now.

nuggetsfan69... Please don't take this the wrong way, but what do you think was the reason you got in with such average stats and no ECs? There must have been something great about your application, because so many kids get rejected with much better scores and GPA's. So I'm just curious what it was, cause that means your app must have been pretty amazing. Congrats!

Don't worry, in another thread nuggetsfan claimed to have a 1600/1600 SAT and a .12 GPA. Clearly fake.

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: hurraaay. I'll say my acceptance was probably weighed more on my stats then ECs[/ul]

D said I could put her stats up. Hope I am doing this right but I am not very optimistic! Sorry if it doesn't look right.

ACCEPTED - OOS as Monroe Scholar

Stats
SAT: didn't send them - they weren't as good as my ACT
SAT II: again didn't send them - they were all in 700s but would have had to send SATs with them
ACT: 34
GPA: 4.0 uw
Rank: N/A but probably top 5 - 7 % - small competitive public high school so several students have similar grades
Other: AP US History - 5; AP English Language - 4; taking 5 APs this year which is probably the most of anyone in my grade

Subjective
Essays: Common App essays were good; W&M essay was really good - also recycled the Who are You essay for Tufts like the poster above - it was my favorite essay of all the essays I wrote
Teacher Recs: didn't see but probably very good
Counselor Rec: didn't see but probably very good
Supplementary Material: None
Hook: None, except that nobody from my high school ever went to W&M - or at least as far back as anyone can remember, so maybe that helped (if it did it's probably the only school where being a white female from a NY suburb was an advantage)

Personal
Location: New York
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Extracurriculars: Varsity Basketball - 4 years, Captain 12, went to states 11; Varsity Tennis - 4 years, Captain 12; Mock Trial - 3 years, went to states 10 and 11; French Club - 4 years, Treasurer 12; Yearbook - 4 years, section editor 11 and 12; School newspaper - 4 years; other minor activities
Awards: Junior book award, some All League Sports awards, school winner for Wendy's High School Heisman Award
Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I really loved W&M went I went to visit last summer, and OOS is very unpredictable, so I am really happy especially about the Monroe Scholar. Not really sure what did it for me though, the whole process is so random.

so clearly I did it wrong, but the information is all there

Oops. Tack Governor's School and AP Scholar onto mine. I forgot about those.

Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[]GPA: 3.98 UW, 4.77 W
[]Rank: 8/494
[/ul]
Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: I thought they were decent
[]Teacher Recs: didn't read
[]Counselor Rec: didn't read
[]Supplementary Material:none
[]Hook: My SAT scores were not good, hence the reason for not posting them (did not break 2000) [/ul]Personal[ul]
[]Location: Virginia
[]Ethnicity: Asian Indian
[]Gender: Male [/ul]Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Like 8 clubs, plus track. President, group leader, and treasurer in some of the clubs.
[]Awards: science fair, few summer programs, leadership conferences
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: the stats you see on CC are way above the norm of people who get in. don't worry if your score is not about 2000. I'm Indian (like the hardest race to get in with) and I got in. WM only accepts about 35% in-state, so I don't think that was as big as a factor as it seems when I came down to it [/ul]

^^^ W & M accepts 35 percent from out of state and 65 percent from in-state (which makes perfect sense, since it's a VA public school). I think they especially liked your GPA and class rank. Congratulations on your admission!

Really? I thought they accepted about 40 percent instate and 20 percent out of state. I even remember them telling me that on my tour. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

All Virginia public colleges and universities have to be at least 2/3 (66%) instate. That's why it's much easier for instate students to get in. OOS students are held to much higher standards, especially because often (esp. for schools like UVA...not sure about W&m's stats), there are a lot more OOS apps than in-state apps.

I think you guys are talking apples and oranges here.

I'm guessing it goes like this, if anyone knows, speak up:
---the student body is 35% IS and 65% OOS
---to achieve that they accept 40% of IS applicants and accept 20% of OOS applicants

Oh, right. You were right about what I was referring to - but I also thought that's what frazzled was referring to. Sorry!
