**** Official RD Decisions For The Class of 2012 ****

yea and allie.
sorry, i should have included the rest of you in that.

My son was rejected also.

-Act: 31
-GPA: 3.9 uw
-Top 7%
-Excellent recs from teacher and counselor who know him well
-Essay could have been better but he insisted on doing it himself (with review by a teacher) - wrote about something he loved to do-I left it at that
-4 years football (2 year starter), basketball (2 year starter, sr capt), baseball (sr capt, 3 year starter)
-Officer in several clubs
-NHS
-DECA
-Well over 100 hours community service
-Held same part time job for 3 and half years
-Attended an info session in nearby community to meet the ND rep
-Non competitive public school with only 3 AP classes offered.

I had been preparing him for the rejection after reading posts on cc and realizing how competitive admisisons to ND really is.

He is happy with his second choice, got a great FA package and we are all excited to finally commit emotionally to one place. He will love it there.

This is our fourth of five (hanging on the eighth grader forever!) to head to college. I can honestly say they are all thriving and the first three all absolutely loved the colleges they attend(ed), which were/are all Catholic privates.

Good luck to everyone on cc wherever you go and remember it's just the beginning of the road, not the end of it!

Mom45 -

Totally understand your comment about "hanging on to your eight grader forever". As a mom of 7 kids (will have 2 kids in college in the fall), I am already at the point of saying how I wish time could stand still....

Wait, what was Tim's result? Was he admitted?

And once again, congrats to everyone who got in. To those who didn't, go full speed ahead wherever you decide to attend, and remember that "this, too, shall pass."

Oh, nevermind, I didn't read Tims thread :(

As with AC, Tim, look at it this way: they let a good one get away.

[li] going to attend? I'm going to need your guys' help to help me decide where to go! im confused[/li][/ul][ b]Other Factors:
My relationship with my rep I guess didn't help as much as I thought it would

Well, congrats to everyone who got in! You guys are going to have such a great time, and maybe Ill be seeing you in the fall of 09' (ND's next football championship also).

Congrats everyone!

^Tim, I've never seen such passion and dedication in an applicant. It's a shame ND couldn't see it...they will definitely regret their decision. good luck for '09 :)

vc08- i'd like to say that i completely agree with your views of ND's admission process. I was accepted to a very competitive program at Penn early decision, but ND was a very close number two on my list. I was deferred ea at ND (then withdrew app). I could not be more happy with the way things worked out, because the program i was accepted to is dream come true, but i think i will greatly miss the overall atmosphere and experience at ND.

If you are on the outside looking in (white non-legacy) of the admissions process, ND has it set up so that all the odds are against you. You figure 30% legacy, 5 to 10% athletes, 30% urm. I realize that there is some overlapping of the groups, but basically if you have no hook, you have to be in the top 30 to 35% of the "accepted" pool to get in. ND has BY FAR the most political system, as in any hook is nearly a guaranteed in.

I had a VERY similar resume to Tim (test scores, ec's and all) and I don't think I would have gotten in. I still love ND as a school and university, just not a fan of the admissions process.

actually nd has the fewest urms of any of the top tier schools. it's around 75% white.

I wonder how much my chances would have been improved if they took the writing section into account?

I was just wondering that after I looked through everyone's acceptances.

Jeeesh, what an exceptional class.

mnijones, glad you agree! definitely THE most political (and, in retrospect, probably the most hypocritical), review process of the 11 schools I applied to. NOT to take anything away from those admitted though, looks like ND '12 will be pretty spectacular!

Congrats to ALL admitted!!!

"ND has BY FAR the most political system, as in any hook is nearly a guaranteed in."

But this is clearly not true. An earlier poster who was a quadruple legacy was rejected. The ND admissions office will confirm that HUNDREDS of angry Domers contact them every year at this time asking why their children were not offered admission. About half of all legacies are admitted, compared with about 25% of applicants overall, so it's a very nice boost, but hardly a guarantee since half are also rejected. Harvard, by contrast, admits about 40% of its legacies, compared with about 10% of the overall applicant pool, so Harvard legacies are getting an ENORMOUS boost.

The problem is that there are simply too many very good applicants, and the admissions decisions are often arbitrary. The ND dean of admissions has stated that at least 80% of ND applicants have the necessary academic qualifications to succeed -- perhaps it would be better to handle the admissions process by lottery rather than pretending that meaningful distinctions can be made among the vast majority of applicants who are extremely well-qualified.

Best of luck to all of you, especially Tim.

Haha claremarie I KNEW you would rush in here sooner or later!

I really don't expect you to understand, but truth is, it's not fair. Look at the kids who are admitted, then look at those getting denied. Is it really right to admit someone with an 1800 bc they are a legacy, over someone like Tim?

That's what the real question is, and that's what each person has to decide for themselves. I'm not going to debate who should have gotten in, and who shouldn't have, for that would question the merits of those admitted, and I don't agree with that. BUT, I do think ND admissions should be questioned. They're losing out on MANY top applicants by not giving everyone a fair shot. And until they do, they will never be able to live up to their full potential. Imagine ND now, and imagine ND with an admissions policy where people like Tim could have an equally fair shot as someone with an 1800 whose parents graduated from there. Not saying legacies and minorities shouldn't be given a slight edge, but a dramatic one is simply unnecessary. It would only make the school better. Again, many, many, the MAJORITY of those admitted would make fabulous applicants at any school. But still, many things are questionable.

Just my $.02, people who got in will probably laugh at me, parents will probably say it's sour grapes, but that's what I thought about ND admissions 2 years ago, and that's what I still say now.

Best of luck to everyone!

True bluedevilmike. And actually, that 22% minorities actually includes Asians, who are not, but national standards, URM.
