Official RD Decisions!

Since the letters are going out, there might be a chance that some of us will be getting the letter as soon as Monday...

Include stats in terms of major strength that helped you get in, and/or major weaknesses that you think may have hurt you, and please also include your location.

Template---if we want to be really organized.

When were the letters sent out and how do you know?

Friday at 4 pm all letters were out. I know because the director of admissions told me (yesterday, email). He knows because he put at least one of the boxes of mail into the hands of the mailman :-P.

But, as I am apparently fond of reminding everyone, don't call the admissions office on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday, etc. to ask what your decision was (for some reason this is the effect that announcing a maildate seems to have). The immutable iron-fisted policy is not to release decisions by phone.

Plus it'll be so much nicer when it comes in the envelope. Good luck everyone!

Good luck guys!!! :)

*Decision: REJECTED *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1560 800M/760V
[] SAT IIs: 790 IIC, 800 Bio, 780 Writ
[] GPA: 4.23
[] Rank: 2/740
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: mediocre
[] Teacher Recs: nothing incredible
[] Counselor Rec: good
[] Hook (if any):
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: LOS ANGELES
[] School Type: INNER city Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: NO research despite parents' professions as scientists, that couldn't look good.

Good luck to everyone else

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1570 (800m, 770v)
[] SAT IIs: 800, 800, 720 (Math 2c, Physics, Writing)
[] GPA: 3.76 uw
[] Rank: ~103/523
[] Other stats: Research internship
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: While not the best written, they definitely conveyed my personality
[] Teacher Recs: One of them definitely should've been good, don't know about others
[] Counselor Rec: No clue. Prolly decent
[] Hook (if any): I liked my third essay, but I'm not sure how much that mattered
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Wisconsin
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: My GPA was clearly my biggest downside, I think. Also, I had a problem with doing math via distance learning, but I tried to address that in my essay. I also have a chronic medical condition, which accounts for a large number (though not all) of my B's. I think that my LoR prolly discussed this some.

I will get rejected, my principal sent the secondary school report in a different format. I don't know if they will accept it and consider my app complete.

*Decision: Waitlisted *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: M 800; V 750
[] SAT IIs: Math II: 780, Writing: 690, Chem: 800
[] GPA: 4.551 W
[] Rank: 2
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Not too good, I admit that they were lacking in the energy that may have made the difference.
[] Teacher Recs: I know, quite good
[] Counselor Rec: Same
[] Hook (if any): None
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Ohio
[] School Type: Suburban Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
Probably the lack of very strong math/science ECs. I focused most of my HS time on speech/debate, which lead to conflict with the math/science clubs. OTOH, I've taken college science courses, and did do research over two summers.

*Decision: WAITLISTED! *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 1440 ( 760M, 680V? Does that add up to 1440?) and 35 ACT
[] SAT IIs: 730 Physics, 740 Math IIC, 800 Writing
[] GPA: 3.909 UW, 4.159 W
[] Rank: I think like 9/302, I'm not entirely sure
[] Other stats: Nat'l Merit Finalist (as of now), Wisconsin Leader of the Year, School paper editor-in-chief, key club exec board, freshman mentor, 2 APs so far and 5 this year.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I think they were pretty bad.
[] Teacher Recs: I think they were pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: He likes me, but he's the school football coach, so I don't know how eloquent he is, but it should have been okay.
[] Hook (if any): Volleyball
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: WI
[] School Type: Public but competitive
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Um, not really. I wrote a letter with my mid-year grade report saying how much I wanted to go there, and I applied early action and was deferred...after getting rejected from MIT, I have to say that I'm proud to be waitlisted. This isn't so bad. Congrats to everyone who got in!

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:1400
[] SAT IIs:800/740/760/720
[] GPA:3.7
[] Rank: District doesn't rank, only approximates to closest 15%. So...top 15%.
[li] Other stats: NASA SHARP, converted that into a normal internship during the school year. doing 6 ap's right now, all a's except for spanish, school literary magazine cd/web editor, science bowl, usamts/amc/etc but didn't place high enough to wow the adcoms, started a science tutoring program at my school, violin for 7 years...etc etc[/li][/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I honestly can't rate my own essays. I wrote about the book "Feynman's Lost Lecture" for the 'how did you discover us' essay...
[] Teacher Recs: pretty good...from ap world and ap chem teachers
[] Counselor Rec: she wrote it after a 1hr interview w/ me but with the number of students she has, well..psuedo cookie cutter, anyone?
[] Hook (if any):
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Maryland
[] School Type: Competitive Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian-Indian
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]

Other Factors: Dunno...rejected from MIT as well, so I was DEFINITELY anticipating a complete rejection from Caltech. Hm...bunch of B's in humanities courses in 9/10th grades. Upwards trend, however...I dunno, speculation doesn't always work =p.

[edit...complete messup with the tags]

Decision: WAITLISTED

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 780M 650V
[] SAT IIs: 800/790/780/750/710/580

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Very good

[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Congrats to all who got in...I'm happy with my waitlist after getting rejected from MIT. Hopefully they'll decide they like me later ;)

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought mine blew, to tell you the truth. I wrote them fairly quickly, but I was pretty honest with my answers. I think I wrote about Feynman for the first one and my experiences as a quizbowl team captain for the second one.
[] Teacher Recs: From my computer science and european history teachers. My Spanish teacher and quizbowl coach also sent some.
[] Counselor Rec: She let me peek at a copy after she sent it out, it was awesome.
