[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, A LOT of it
[] Intended Major: Econ or International Studies
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Charter
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Vietnamese-Chinese)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Low-Income (< 20,000)
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, First generation, part of first graduating class, gay, low-income
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection

Strengths: I am a very unconventional applicant to Middlebury. I come from a low-income background and school, but have scores near or above the average for applicants. I took many comm. college classes.

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried to focus on the fact that I would bring a lot of diversity to the campus. I am a gay, low-income, Asian, first-generation, student at a school where I will be the first graduating class and where I had to start and build up two clubs of my own. I don’t think a lot of other applicants could say that.

Weaknesses: Test Scores, Interview, Lack of APs

Why you think you were accepted: For the exact reason of the aspects I tried to focus on in my application. I am a unique student who has worked hard and taken advantage of all my resources effectively to rise out above poverty.

Where else were you accepted:
Bates - Accepted
Bowdoin - Accepted (Early Write)
Colby - Accepted (Early Write)
Haverford - Accepted
Kenyon - Accepted
Wesleyan - Accepted (Early Write)
UCSD - Accepted
Vassar (I’ll know today)
UCI - Rejected

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Hell yeah!
[] Intended Major: good question
[] State (if domestic applicant): TN
[] School Type: small, private, co-ed
[] Ethnicity: mutt of northern European origins. First-generation American
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: evidently not quite poor enough
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): ummm… dual citizenship? Living in faraway Tennessee?

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: test scores, recs
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: not enough
[] Weaknesses: interview, lack of service ECs
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I had a solid application but I didn’t have a good enough hook, I don’t think
[*] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: waitlisted Washington U St. Louis, accepted University of Chicago, Sewanee: University of the South, and UT Knoxvilel Honors College.

Modadunn in particular (and all the rest of you) Congratulations, I’ve been following your struggles with the whole admissions process for a while now and I’m really happy for you that it worked out!

For those of you who got waitlisted or rejected, stay strong. This is no indication of your value. It’s an indication of the high level of competition at a place like Midd. Besides, know that 12 months from now you’ll be somewhere wondering why you were ever upset about not being accepted at Midd. Good Luck!

thanks Urbanslaughter! It’s been a good two days so far. It really does get personal knowing so many of these posters for sure. So happy for many!

As for those rejected, waitlisted. No one knows how you feel… even those in the same boat because everyone’s thoughts about certain colleges are different. Still, know that there does seem to be a great deal of luck once you get past the numbers. And I still don’t claim to understand it in the least. But none of it diminishes anything you’ve accomplished and as a parent, I am here to say that for the majority of us, the only disappointment we feel is for how YOU are feeling. We might not say the right thing because we know how much you have invested of yourself into this process, but we just want to see you happy. Remember: This one moment in time does not define anyone… good or not-so-good.

AvantTao – I am so happy that colleges were able to recognize how extremely hard you must have worked to achieve comparable test scores to people who attend private prep schools. Congratulation on all your acceptances, seeing how colleges were able to identify how smart and hardworking you are has given me hope that perhaps the college process is not as slanted towards those with high-incomes.

btw I enjoyed “hook: gay.” ha.
