Nahh I’m sorry, Europe just comes in first :)

Hey Katie.
I’m doing full IB. 38 predicted (plus 3 for TOK and EE, but I didn’t really indicate that anywhere). Kind of special circumstances for one of my subjects where I have a 5. And I have a 7th subject at HL where I have a 7.
How about you?

Why special circumstances for having a 5, Heart?
The thing about the 7th subject though is that it doesn’t count in your total, unless you indicate that it’s your 6th. Then your current 6th becomes your 7th…
What classes you taking? What’s your EE on?

I hate making excuses for grades, but the general consensus worldwide seems to be that the M09 session (my session) was the hardest yet, partly apparently because the syllabi were changed for a lot of classes (I was the 1st round of the new syllabus in 4 out of 6 classes. epic fail.) & that Maths HL got a new Chief Examiner. In short, I dropped from 42 predicted to a 34… ooooopsie!
At least my subject tests make up for the two I really bombed imo & I didn’t have the easiest course level
No bonus, the TOK grader for Austria was strict or new or idk, but nobody in Austria got higher than a B in the essay, and I got the worst of the 3 Maths EE graders (my teacher knows them so from the grading style she figured out who did mine…? whatever)

You should probably send each school an extra thing indicating your predicted bonus points?

Well, I have a 5 in Bosnian A1 HL because I’ve never formally been taught Bosnian (although I am Bosnian and have lived in Bosnia my whole life). Ironically, I’m taking English B HL which is ridiculous since English is practically my native language and I speak it better than Bosnian. sigh

I’m taking Psych SL (psych major, but my school doesn’t offer HL), Chem SL (ew), Math Studies SL (because I’m lazy and it has way more statistics than regular Math which is useful for psych), Bos A1 HL, Eng B HL, Bio HL, and French B HL.

My EE is about autism and mirror neurons (psych).

Yup, I know about the 7th subject thing. With it, I have 45/49.

And oh man that sucks. 34 isn’t bad at all, practically a 6 average. But yeah, my boyfriend was M09 and he got a whopping 26 points, while 40% of the class failed. But let’s just say they didn’t quite fit the learner’s profile lol. I’m really sorry to hear that you kind of got screwed over though. I’m afraid of that too… For example, in Chem and Bio, my teachers have no clue how labs are supposed to be done. Last year, a guy had a predicted 38 out of 48 for his labs and it was moderated down to 24. ***.

Regarding bonus points, do you think so? I wasn’t sure because my counselor already submitted the midyear report and so I didn’t know if telling the colleges myself would be too informal and unreliable. I mean, I guess 3 points are important…

But yeah, PM me your FB or something if you want so we can continue talking without clogging up the thread :)

I would mention it to your college counsellor, and evaluate how you think you’re doing in the getting-in race. If you honestly think you’re a shoo-in, don’t bother, but otherwise more info can’t hurt…

I took
HL:
English A1
German A2 (switched to SL in Nov of IB2 because we got a new teacher and that just did NOT work out for me. ended up with a 7 sooo )
History. Europe
Maths. Sets

SL:
Chemistry (agree on the eww) Environmental chem & human biochem as the Options
Spanish B 1yr course, M08 session

& I wrote my EE in Maths - finding a possible all-encompassing definition for dimension by studying fractals, string & superstring theory, the 4th dimension, and various interesting physically impossible shapes such as the Klein Bottle.

But yeah, those stats about your boyfriend’s class aren’t uncommon for May 09ers. A lot of my grade just passed, more than enough failed, for the first time ever we had no 45s. Most of my friends in HL Maths didn’t make their offers for unis in the UK because of Paper 2. In east Asia (Singapore and Hong Kong I seem to remember) a few kids were hospitalised afterwards! i mean, seriously? easier exams might be in order…

Hahah I definitely do not think I’m a shoo-in. My counselor is pretty much useless and dumb, so I think I’ll just call the admissions office(s) and ask how I should go about that.

Wow I see you like math lol.

But yeah, I agree – the IBO has a noble mission and everything, but I think they have trouble making things adequately standardized in regards to examiners and how things are taught at different schools.

A Maths EE is not deadly, if you compare it to a proper History EE ;)

I like the IB, but the Chem SL syllabus is off imo - it’s so disparate, like there’re no connections between topics in SL. I think there’s no point in a TOK essay because it’s so amazingly subjective, and whole system of grading the exams!: 10 minutes max for a 12 page poetry commentary? That just can’t be well graded.
And Maths HL 09 was horrendous. I still haven’t gotten over that one :P

I’m so terrible at Chem that I can’t even judge the syllabus lol. I have NO clue how I have a predicted 6 lol. What did you end up getting?

But yeah, it’s not realistic when it comes to grading the exams. I mean, you can be the most experienced examiner ever but I’m sorry, your eyeballs can’t even move fast enough to read that much in the 2.5 seconds you devote to it.

5 hahahaha
the exam was actually quite hilarious (only in retrospect though). chem in M09 was at the beginning of Week 3, and was my last group of exams, so after study leave/during exams I didn’t revise for it at all. i come home from my afternoon exam the friday before and suddenly i have the flu. so i got pretty much zero studying done that weekend, meaning i hadn’t looked in chem for almost a month when i was taking the exams, all with a lovely fever.
paper 1 i was concentrating on not throwing up, paper 2 i was concentrating on concentrating, and paper 3, the next morning, i just didn’t care about anymore because it was only 60 teensy minutes until freedom from two years of IB.

xD remembering that, i’m actually quite pleased :D

Another vote for Europe>EC>WC. I’d love to go to Europe. I’ve never been outside of the US, so I am quite desperate to go somewhere, but Europe tops that list. =D

come visit :)

so when does Wesleyan send out notification for ED? By mail or email?

wow, ED applicants havent even heard back yet?
i applied RD, hopefully we’ll all hear back by late march

Sorry, I meant Regular Decision… I wonder if it is mail or email, or online?

I know you definitely hear back by mail, but I’d assume Adcom would also post a link on everyone’s WesCheck (or whatever that’s called) so that all RD applicants could check online, too.

Sigh. I just got back from a two-night overnight visit the other day, and I think it’s safe to say that this is one of the most amazing schools ever. I was there for Mardi Gras, and during each meal the marching band would come in and play music (they sang, too) for everyone. SO cool. And everyone is super friendly, too!

End ramble. The Waiting Game has officially made me go mad.
