Official Regular Decions Thread

Flipsta, I'm having that same thing. The scholarship I got (barbara jordon) isn't enough for me to decide Rice over Columbia, but my parents are definitely giving it a nod.

ACCEPTED!!!!! =]]]]]]]]]]]] will post stats later. i got a letter =] hehe... and i was deferred ID...

honestly, i think what i heard was right. Rice tends to defer many strong candidates if they apply ED or ID, and then wait to see if they still have interest. i hear it's because they don't want to accept people who have no real desire in going. =]]

now i have to decide between rice and northwestern. hm hm.

Heidi!, when you have some time (done celebrating), would you post your stats? Your insight on the ID applicant thing gave me some hope... thank you!

*? How did i get waitlisted at Rice and get into Columbia. I broke through 9.6% and didn't get through Rice? *

That's wierd iMiracle I got rejected from Columbia College and waitlisted at Rice... well at least I know you wont be taking your waitlist spot (I'd hate to have to compete with you for a spot)

REJECTED... I did too many of these. Don't feel like doing them again.

Decision: ACCEPTED!!!

Stats:
SAT: 2020 (700 CR, 580 M, 720 W)
SAT IIs:BIOLOGY-E (Relatively well) MATH (Not as well)
GPA: 4.58 W
Rank:1/487

Other stats:No AP Tests

Subjective:
Essays:Excellent and heart-wrenching. I kind of went the emotional route. Everything was true, but it just so happened that I have had a really tough life that makes what achievements I have made stand out a little bit more than those of a boarding school genius.
Teacher Recs: Excellent. The fact that I have made any effort at all in school makes me stand out from the rest of my fellow classmates, so they tend to go the extra mile for me.
Counselor Rec:Excellent. I developed a good relationship with my counselor early on because I knew the day would come when I would need her.

Hook (if any): Overly involved in everything...I'm a dancer, I play two varsity sports (both state championship winning), I'm student gov't. vice pres., NHS pres., boys and girls club volunteer, and I have an after school job, on top of the fact that I don't live with either parent or have a car (in a non- subway having city)

Location/Person:
State or Country: Alabama
School Type: Public Magnet (Performing Arts)
Ethnicity: Black
Gender:Female
major strength/weakness: My biggest strength is my determination and focus on my goals. Biggest weakness... no rich connects to make phone calls on my behalf.

why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered:I think I was accepted because they hadn't yet filled their yearly quota for "poor black girl w/ sad story". Hey, there's no shame in my game i'm just realistic and have been disillusioned as a result of this grueling app. process. My SAT I-IIs were not the strongest, but i did put out a stellar performance on my ACT.

Additional comments: Now all I have to do is decide between the above mentioned, Vanderbilt, and Brown... Plus, I've been wait listed at Harvard (although I'm not really holding my breath).

Don't ever ever ever try to figure out college admissions. Don't compare the colleges to one another and say, "How come i got into here and not into here?" or even "Why did my friend get in there and I didn't when I had much better stats?" I was lucky enough to get accepted everywhere but MIT (and UF because they lost my transcripts), but to some extent, college admissions are extremely random. The good schools are good enough that the number of applicants exceeds the number of spots. Because there are so many very qualified students, not all of these qualified students can fit into those spots. The acceptance % doesn't really prove anything either because the applicant pools are very different anyway. With all that said, I actually didn't realize Rice was that selective.

EDIT: Um, for whoever asked... The scholarships came with the acceptance letter in the mail. Financial aid information did not.

I'm just so *ed that i got waitlisted at Rice. I realyl might sound arrogant but the thign is when you get into a great school and waitlisted at a good school you just get so *ed. It makes you doubt if the acceptance was a flake.

Did anyone get their decision online? And if not, when and where are they supposed to be out?

No idea. I'm stiiillll waaiting. So darn frustrating. They're not open right now, so I think we might actually have to wait until Monday. :(

No mailing either until Monday.

has anyone gotten rejected so far.....? or rejection letters come later...

Other Factors: i didn't have an interview
General Comments: I'm kinda disappointed but what can you do...

i'm screwed, i'm also from ny and my stats are basically the same, except i interviewed. rice hasn't sent me letter or posted my decision online. i'm going to get rejected for sure.

admission is not based solely on stats
