My D received her package today in MD $15 Dean’s Scholarship Her stats for those that are interested:
GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.1 W
SAT 670 R, 740 M, 600 W
SAT II 790 Math, 700 Chem (although I don’t think they consider these)
attends a public school science/math magnet program
9 AP classes / many ECs / volunteerism in the community

I agree with others that this “drip” process at AU is crazy. My D was also accepted at Villanova EA and it was very simple. Acceptances were posted on the student portal and all were posted on the same day. Too much anxiety with this way of doing it!
Good Luck to all that are still waiting!

I have a question about the Presidential Scholarship. Is it one-time or renewable? Will I continue to receive it as long as I keep a certain GPA?

Not only are the Dean’s and Presidential Scholarships renewable if the GPA requirement is met, AU is very understanding of freshman year adjustment issues that may affect GPA’s–typically, a student who has lost a merit award but is still doing decently can appeal the decision, explaining the situation and what actions he or she plans to take to do better, and the award will be restored. Nonetheless, the GPA requirement does hang over the head of recipients–anyone planning to party his way through AU should not rely on keeping these scholarships to pay his way.

We’re from NY and my son reced his packet Tues. I;m asking just for info purposes since it seems everyone is talking about 15 or 20 k in grants. His financial award is broken into 2 semesters fall and spring each listing the amt of 15100. as an AU Grant. I am assuming thats 30200 for each year. Does that sound right? Does anyone have info about Eagle Summits, are they worth it and University College

The 20k and 15k are referring to merit based scholarships. Grants are usually need based. It is possible to received 15,000 per semester as a need based grant, but that is exceptionally rare. My best guess is that the 15,000 is per year or that your son is receiving 15,000 per semester, but that includes all loans, work study, etc.

I don’t know how American does there needs based since we received nothing from the Fed Govt except for the usual 5500.00 in sub and unsub loans for the student and 2000 / yr in work study. I really dont believe its a year because AU send the financial aid awards with 2 columns. Fall and Spring. It has the amt 15100 under each column and assuming theyre combining it with loans (5500) and workstudy (2000) it says underneath total award 37700. My S has nicee grades, didnt rock the SAT but wrote great essays and teachers gave nice letters. Not sure if AU grant is need or merit but Im happy. Still alot of money left though, depending on someones circumstance, i mean i have to explore how to come up with the extra almost 2k a month of the remaining tuition.

@momshappy - each column is per semester so yes total award does total $37,700 including $30,200 in grants. Also, you’re looking at closer to $1k/month not $2k. Based on 2010-11 costs, total tuition + room/board is roughly $51k. Less the $37,700 in aid gets you to $13,300 as your out-of-pocket cost for next year.

Thank u dadof3…Yur right. My efc was like 10500. Im really wondering what the Au grant is…merit or need? Says nothing about dean or presidential scholarships. And is this Au grant guaranteed for 4 years if gradeskeep up

MY D received $!7,000 Au grant/semester along with a Pell grant of $1,000/semester. With the types of loans and FWS that were given, it makes American a great option. I actually had to call AU Financial Aid just to confirm that I had it right. We are very grateful.

Momshappy–the merit award is mentioned specifically in the admissions letter. Along the lines of “I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to receive a blah blah scholarship in the amount of XX annually. This award is in recognition of your outstanding academic achievement.”

If it’s just included in the separate sheet with the financial aid package, then it’s a need-based award. They do expect you to re-submit FAFSA forms every year and if you won the lottery (or your other kid finished college), your EFC would change and they’d presumably reduce your need-based grant. But I don’t think there is a GPA component to getting it renewed.

Yes, momshappy, it sounds clearly like he got a very good need-based financial aid grant. Congratulations!

It seems clear that AU is spreading the money around as best as they can. We were very much surprised that our D2 got a Dean’s Scholarship. Based on her stats, I don’t think she would have gotten that last year. It looks like they’re giving smaller awards to the Presidential Scholarship winners and handing out more to the lower end of the top pile.

I think it’s a very smart move, because they know those tippy-top kids are going to get big money at lots of schools, and AU’s chance of snagging them isn’t as great. But it can make a real difference for the next tier of kids, like my D. American vaulted a lot higher on her list with the offer.

I’m from New Hampshire and I received the email on Wednesday, packet on Thursday. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard yet, a bunch of people from my school heard 4-5 days before I did so they’re definitely stretching it out and it seems to have no bearing on scholarships, honors, or anything.

I am into the Global Scholars Program, Honors Program, and received $20K Presidential Scholarship.

Stats:
4.28 GPA UW on school’s 4.3 scale
2240 SAT, 660M 800CR 780W
660 Math II, 690 Spanish w/ Listening, 710 Literature SATII

Congrats on all of the acceptances! Quick question- I received an email two days ago notifying me of my acceptance (yay!) but no details. I have yet to receive anything in the mail since then, and since I applied to the Global Scholars Program, I’m kind of anxious to get my package. Was there a large discrepancy between when you guys got the email and when you received the snail mail?

One other thing to note- I go to a boarding school, but am currently on spring break, so I’m home, a few states away. Is it possible that the package went to my boarding school address? I do get some mail there. I tried calling admissions but the line was busy. I’ll try again tomorrow, but I’m just wondering what your opinions are. Thanks!

@finnah - The email I got was several days after I got my package and only said congrats about being accepted. The packet, however, contained the Global Scholars and Honors acceptances as well as my Presidential scholarship. So, keep faith and just wait for the package Oh and I think it is totally possible that it went to your boarding school, they should be able to tell you when you call again or you could check when you get back!
