Official Regular Decision Thread

Any limited scholarships come with the FA package. At least that is how it was 4 years ago when my son applied.

Thanks Debruns. Well will keep our fingers crossed but I am realistically not too hopeful.

What exactly is the pre-med program at Holy Cross?

norwich-- here’s a link to Holy Cross’s web site’s pre-med program writeup

[Health Professions](http://academics.holycross.edu/healthprofessions)

Thanks, KY. I have seen this but don’t understand what advantage being “premed” is over just being, say, a bio major.

Waitlisted. The letter says that people accepted from the waitlist typically don’t get financial aid. Does this mean that they give none or that they are very selective with who they give money to?

ACCEPTED !!! yahoo

I was waitlisted at hc, but its not my first choice anyway. I’m just confused how I got accepted to Amherst college but waitlisted at hc. I’m salutatorian in a class of about 400 with plenty of extracurriculars, varsity sports, and a 2250 on SATs.
This was honestly a safety or easy target and it doesn’t make sense. Any thoughts?

norwich, technically speaking there is no difference between the bio major and “premed” outside of the 1 extra english class needed for premed. The premed classification is useful for students who aren’t science majors so that spots can be saved in the chem/bio/physics classes. Premed is still needed for the science majors though as you need to be premed in order to get a recommendation from the premed committee (which is crucial for getting in to med school).

Also I have seen a couple people on here say that 80-90% of HC kids get accepted into med school…i just wanted to clarify that this number is 80-90% of the kids who get recommended by the premed board and not just kids who apply in general (although most who don’t get recommended wait until they do). Premed kids start the process of getting approval two years before they plan on starting med school (the seniors this year who are going straight to med school started the process at the beginning of junior yr.)

Also, I’m a senior bio/premed major at HC so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask me anything.

Thanks hcbc. That is very helpful. One more question. Is there an Honors College at Holy Cross? Are freshman asked to participate?

there is no “honors college” like some schools have where you start in your freshman year. Instead the honors program at HC starts in the junior year. I believe most people in the college honors program are invited into the program during the 2nd year. I think you are initially nominated by a faculty member (I’m not sure if you can ask the prof to start the nomination process or what). And the minimum is that you have a 3.5 GPA through the first 4 semesters. The program includes small seminars junior/senior year and a thesis for the senior year in you major. You seem to be science so you would be able to get into a prof’s lab and do your thesis on a lab project. Some departments also have honors programs. Here is the website: [Honors Information and Application Process](http://academics.holycross.edu/honorsprogram/information)

to hcbc2010:
i was accepted to holy cross regular decision but turned down from the pre-med concentration. do you know how difficult it is to initially get into the concentration? do you know how difficult it is to get accepted to the concentration. i want to try and appeal my pre-med rejection, do you think this is at all possible. i know it said in the letter that a limited number of students can be accepted by the end of their first year, but i don’t want to miss out on a year of meetings/activities/etc…

I’ve heard rumors that if you get even one C in your high school transcript, HC will reject you…

is this true?

I mean reject you after you have been accepted.

I’ve been accepted, but I’m afraid of doing poorly on a test or something and then getting a C and then getting rejected

collegekid:

I’m not sure exactly how hard it is to get into premed initially but for what its worth usually 200-250 kids are premed coming in (out of classes of about ~750 that is pretty high). To appeal now most likely won’t work. My suggestion to increase your chances at transferring in after the 1st year would be to start the chemistry sequence right away. In order to do that you may have to declare a chemistry major just cause the intro chem classes fill because all premed/bio majors/chem majors need to take the sequence as well (and class size is the limiting factor). I’m not sure who you would talk to at HC about getting into chem classes as an undecided major right now (usually you talk to your class dean but I’m not sure who will be dean for 2014…i would say someone in admissions could direct you to someone who would be able to answers questions like that). You should also take the calculus sequence as well. If find you are able to take the chem classes and do well in all your classes in general the premed committee will look highly on that. I personally transferred into premed at the end of my 1st year although I was already a bio major so adding me to premed did not take up class space as I already held a spot with my bio major status. Also don’t worry about missing things…there really aren’t major events the first year…i didn’t go to any my first year…and if there are and you tag along and say that you are trying to join premed I’m sure they will let you stay

I haven’t heard the get a C and then HC rescinds the offer so I wouldn’t get that worried about it. If you have gotten into HC you are obviously a bright student so just keep doing what you have been doing the past 4 years and you won’t have a thing to worry about.

Thank you haha…I was just a bit nervous, because I have finally decided that I want to go to Holy Cross. I can’t wait.

Although it’s in worcester, and not near Boston, I’ve definitely had enough benefits from Boston for it to be not much of a bummer haha.

hcbc2010 - Thanks for jumping in to answer questions.

I am considering BC and HC for premed. How would you compare the two programs?

Congrats to everyone accepted! I’m currently a sophomore at HC, so if you have any questions, just let me know. If you’re initially rejected from the pre-med program, you can still apply at the end of your freshman year. :)

Oh and SirGluttony, Holy Cross has buses to Boston every Friday and Saturday

apparently, I have just received a CSS profile saying that I need to send them stuff (like parent’s w-2, tax return) etc…in a packet. If I don’t submit this, do I not get financial aid?

I definitely submitted CSS but don’t know what’s wrong…ugh so late
