[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I don't know... I think they liked me essays. There's really no other reason. [/li][/ul]Other Factors: IB Candidate, Art supplement, AFS Awards for Excellence, which I told them about in a letter one week before today. some other things, but check Yale, Harvard, or Princeton thread for more details (sorry if this is offensive to the Brown board, but I wasn't smart enough to just copy what i wrote there and paste it here...I'm actually writing it over and over again each time.) And each time I post my stats, I am amazed that I got in. Oh, also, my interviewer was really nice and liked me. She said that it seems that Brown is a great fit for me. I remember more... just local leadership in school clubs (leader of 2 clubs, 4 year participation in several others).

did anyone else not find inscape's comment totally inappropriate? it diminishes the hard work of digital90 to, well, nothing because he's saying he got in because he's black.

yea its inappropriate but its safe to say that an asian or white with the same stats would not have gotten in

i'm sure he worked hard but his ethnicity was by far the BIGGEST factor

the whole "affirmative action" thing is ridiculous nowadays...it happened in the past...all races have the same opportunity...its not fair to reject highly qualified student (no, i'm not being a disgruntled bum) because they need to meet racial quotas

that was a totally inappropriate comment...I mean, if he got a 3.5 gpa and he's ranking third, he must go to a really crappy school. I've been to absolutely horrid (and all black) areas in DC- digital must have been able to write some very good essays about his experience. It's awesome that he could see beyond his situation and apply to a place like Brown. congrats digital :)

Essays: I think they made the case for my academic compatibility with Brown's Community Health major.

Teacher Recs: They knew me, and they knew my abilites, so they were able to articulate them well. I also had additional recs from 3 others: My chem teacher i had for 2 years, the District Director of Curriculum & Articulation who was my mentor during freshman year in an Independent Study on public health, and my student council advisor.

Counselor Rec: I'm tight with my counselor, so it was great.

Hook (if any): I'm conservative (a hook at Brown)

major strength/weakness: Strength: Compatibility with Community Health major. I know a lot of kids who applied to Brown and it seems to me that they only use grades and test scores to make sure the applicant can handle the work. From there, they look for the most diverse group of students. My ECs had to have helped: Student Council President, Class President, Rotary Interact Community Service Club Director, Model UN Secretary General, Tennis Co-captain, Hospital volunteer, Owner of Independent DJ Company, and I work at a camp for terminally ill children over the summer. The ECs had to have done it.

why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I guess I was a good fit.

My interview went well, although it was over the phone because so many people applied from my area.

bingo, asterstar. case in point, my school sends 20% of students to four year colleges. The very BEST students get into UT and Texas A&M. We haven't had any NMSC Semi-Finalists in a decade. Our town is one of the poorest in TX. I'm a Mexican-American who has lived in this town all my life. valedictorian, NMSC Finalist, and accepted to Rice, MIT, and Harvard. the saluditorian is one of the richest white male's in our town. His dad is the head surgeon in town. He got rejected from Duke and UVA and accepted to Trinity in TX and Rhodes in TN. He says he wishes he was Mexican, so then he could have gotten in. It grates on my every nerve when he says that because he doesn't know the hell it is being a poor Mexican with parents who used to be illegal immigrants and who became citizens against their will only so that I and my sister would have a sliver of the opportunity this rich white kid takes for granted. My life has been severely restricted by our poverty and only books and school have allowed me to distance myself from it. And he everytime he says how lucky I am for being mexican, I want to...I don't know..make him understand. Sorry, I don't want this to turn into an "affirmative action" argument.

so the day they decided on my app, there was this HUGE storm going on in Providence. and so they put my folder in the pile and left for home. but they forgot to close the window, because this REALLY huge surge of wind blew in the room, and flipped my folder onto another pile. i mean that is the ONLY way i could have GOTTEN IN. haha.

Decision: ACCEPTED (by an act of god)

Stats:
SAT: 1200(600V, 600M)
SAT IIs: 580/560/610 i actually sent them my ACT (29) i never studied, i think its just a money making scheme
GPA: 3.86
Rank: 5/62
Other stats: community involvement like crazy. i have over 700 hours in the past two years, and i assure you, i have a life.
Subjective:
Essays: i was told it was great
Teacher Recs: really great
Counselor Rec: really great
INTERVIEW: oh my god, it was HORRIBLE. the guy could barely speak up, and he didnt say much except the usual textbook answer of "there is nothing like Brown" or "the people at brown are all different" obviously his answers wern't. sheesh, and then he came late to the interview and when he left he lied and made up this excuse. such a bum. but he got in cause he played soccer (he said it himself)
Other recs: Brown alumni, who also interviews so i geuss that had an impact
Hook (if any): Leadership i geuss. im on the Board of Ed. and i volunteer at a copuple of places alot. and im part of a youth council. and they left the window open.

why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: umm... i didnt annoy the crap out of them, my 1000 (not a typo) word ESSAY really made sense and was pretty entertaining

ASSURANCE: i dont really care about spelling, so dont use it as a measurement of my intellectual abilities. and just to save anyone the hassle of cursing brown for accepting a "person who is beneath them", i assure u i wasnt chosen cause im black. but im not black...hmmm

Thanks you guys for taking up for me. I've worked sooooooo hard in my life, and it kind of makes me mad to hear someone say that I got in only because I'm black. From where I come from, applying to a school such as Brown in unheard of. My mother and practically everyone in my area was discouraging me because they didn't think that I would make it. They thought that I would end up like the countless drug dealers, and crack heads in my area. I have been working since the age of 12 taking care of my younger siblings, putting food on the table, and helping my mother to pay the rent. All while doing this, I've been in high school. Because of my two part time jobs, studying and doing homework is very hard for me to do. I get home from my jobs approximately at 11:00 each weeknight (today is one of my few days off), and once I get in, I do my homework. I don't finish my homework until seriously at 3:00 in the morning. Then, I have to get up at 7:00 to start my day again. All while doing this, I've maintained a 3.5 gpa. Also, I had no time or the money to take an SAT Prep course to bring up my scores. Brown saw all of this through my application, and probably thought that I could benefit from their education.

digital... you have the greatest CONGRATULATIONS i have given so far. sometimes, it doesnt matter what your grades are, or the sat scores (in my opinion its just amoney making scheme, i have a 1200 and got into Brown) but how u achieved everything you do. my school sendas a hugepercentage of students to 4-year schools, about 92%. but alot of them are not ivies. im from a city that was named "the most DANGEROUS in the US" but we can all rise above the stereotypes. agian, congratulations... im sure ull get some major mulah... hopefully i will too. god knows, i need it

Everyone who applied to Brown worked hard. It is rubbish to say one deserves admission simply for working hard. Working hard is not good enough. Your race was crucial in your admission. I don't agree with it but I respect Brown's right to give opportunities to whomever they wish. Brown chooses and not I. If I could get in because of my race I would take the opportunity, but of course! It doesn't matter why you got into Brown. Okay, now everyone can badger you all they want because you got in on a race card. Big deal! The point is that you are going to Brown. Sometimes luck determines fate. You have quite a fate.

I was just browsing the Brown Forum, and I came across Digital's post, and the subsequent posts thereafter. First of all, I must say congrats to Digital!!!!!

Secondly, for those stating that Digital got in because of his race, I beg to differ. I found out today that one of my best friends who happens to be Asian got into Brown today!!!!!! Guess what her stats are? She has a 3.6 gpa (considered to be low at her school), and an sat score of 1210. How did she get into Brown? Obviously, it wasn't her "race" that "got her in." According to many, an asian with her stats wouldn't get in, but she did. Her application and her essays made her unique to the point that Brown accepted her!!!!!!! The admissions committee obviously believes that Brown could benefit from her. They accepted her over this girl I know at her school, who happens to be black and priveleged, who has a 1440 Sat Score, and who's gpa is high enough to possibly become Valedictorian. But, according to many, she was supposed to get in because she's black. Where was the "racial preference" for her? She even thought she was going to get in! I had a conversation with her today, and boy was she upset. Go figure... Digital's application and essays must have been so unique and stood out to the point that the admissions committee accepted him. They think that he will contribute to the environment of the campus. That is so great!!!!!!!!!! Congrats Digital.
