Registering for the SAT, I was asked whether I wanted scores to be sent to colleges. However, since I do not yet know my scores, I really don't want to have them sent off....I asked my guidance counselor for advice, and she said that some schools require an "official" score report where others are okay with the high school alone verifying scores. I was wondering if anyone knew which schools required college board verification, which are okay with just reporting scores on the application, and whether my guidance counselor is correct in saying this anyway?

The vast majority of schools require the official report, so that it cannot be altered by students or GCs. That being said, though, please realize that you can send the scores later, for a fee, so you don't have to send them now.

Many kids don't send the scores initially because they may take the exam again, at which time you'd have to send the scores again. Also, if you take any SAT II's, you'd still have to send those scores. When you send a report, all your previous tests are also sent, but the scores aren't updated. You can wait until you're done with all your testing to send the scores.

Example:
Take SAT I in May. Send to Schools A, B, C, & D.
Take SAT II in June. You'll have to send them to schools A, B, C, & D again, and those schools will also see your SAT I again.
Take SAT I again in October. You'll have to send the score report to A, B, C & D again if you want them to see your new scores.

So, instead, you can not send the SAT I May score, or the SAT II scores, and send only the October scores, and all the scores will be sent. Then you just pay the $10 fee per school to send the scores to Schools E through Q.
