Official Rice/Baylor Thread!

There's a more recent thread in the Rice University section.

Rice made calls inviting finalists for interviews late last week and early this week.

can people post some stats, so people who apply next year can get a general feeling of how hard to get into the program.
This will definitely be beneficial.
So please flaunt your stats

I just heard from R/B.. im in!!! Now the tuff decision... U.Penn or R/B ... any suggestions!!!! Help!!!!

Hey there, I've browsed your posts and seen that you have many excellent choices.

HPME, UPenn, Rice/Baylor, and some other BA/MD programs. I would recommend one of the BA/MD programs. How close do you live to Texas? That is a serious issue for many students -- living far from their parents. Also, I think HPME is a more established, solid program. You would do excellently there. Also it is 7 years, is that a important thing for you?

Take all those into account. I would recommend the BA/MD programs.

i got into Rice/baylor!

Hi guys,

I'm going to be a junior next year an I really want to get into Rice/Baylor. I was just wondering what you really need. And, if any of you guys are familiar w/ IB, does that help at all? Cuz, it's not helping my GPA, that's for sure.

Right now, I'm a little screwed. My GPA isn't close to great. I've got ECs and I'm taking really hard classes at an extremely competitive school. Given I'm in top 10% and I can get a 5.2 overall by the end of junior year, after my junior year grades go up to compensate for my Freshman and Sophomore grades, do I stand a chance? I will prolly be on Varsity Tennis next year. I will also have done a lot of volunteer work by the en of next year, prolly over 300 hours. The summer b4 senior year, if I stay in IB, I'll be writing a research paper about something about psychosomatic connections(I find that stuff fascinating!) with a mentor who does research in the field. My PSAT scores are pretty good and so are my SAT scores. Do you all recommend anything else????? PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!!!!

thanks,
a rice/baylor hopeful

all the stats really just get u into rice which isnt easy pie. the essay of r/b is what gets u the interview. when u interview for r/b they dotn give a crap if you have a 130 in ur psat or whatever. neither do they ask about research. it is all about u, ur personality, etc. pick something that stands out...not cliche things.

so, what kind of stats get you into rice?

there really inst any "specific" stats. i know of alot of people getting denied with a perfect 1600 in the old sat or like 2380 and people with much lower sat scores getting in. i think nowadays the essays are really important so i would suggest u work hard on that and the "box". also, pick EC's that stand out not the NHS and everyhtin that everybody does although u can have that too.

kapiki13, what are ur stats? or prospective clubs? Also, which school do you attend?

I live in Houston and really want to go into the Rice/Bayor program..... you said that stats arent it really beause everyone will probably have great standings, so do you belive that extracurriculars that are all over like HOSA and Speech and Debate are better than NHS

Hey gang. I'm curious about the Rice/Baylor program, and I've just finished reading through this crazy-long thread, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there are any special opportunities for Rice/Baylor students.

For example, for Brown's PLME you have a special PLME advisor and are guaranteed a summer of paid research. I know there are MANY opportunities at the Texas Medical Center for even regular undergraduates, but are there any additional perks for Rice/Baylor students?

(Not that if there were none I wouldn't apply, I'm just curious)

Thanks

If you are a Rice/Baylor Medical Scholar you will not need a guarantee. The program is well known among research centers, and you will have no difficulty landing a paid research internship at the TMC or most anywhere else, for three summers if you want.

is there really a split between 10 Texan's and 10 out of states getting accepted? Or is it free-for-all?

I got an invitation today! Yay!

So Did I! I didn't think I would!

has anyone else heard anything?
are interview notifications sent out all at once?

Yup, I got an e-mail invite too! I don't know if it's only for people who live far away though, because the e-mail mentions sending the e-mails early to let people make travel arrangements. It did say that we'd be getting an e-mail from BCM tomorrow though.

could any of you post what the email exactly said?

i got an email invite too...:) i can't make it on that day, though, but they let me reschedule
