Decision: Accepted
Objective:
•New SAT: 1570: 800 M, 770 Eng, 7/7/7 essay. Taken only once.
•ACT: 35 composite:35 math, 36 science, 35 english, 35 reading, 23 essay (did not submit b/c of low essay). Taken only once (forced due to district policy, no prep, thus lack of 36).
•SAT Subject Tests: Math II (800), Chemistry (800), Physics (790)
•Unweighted GPA (out of 100): 96.7 Our school gives 10 quality points for AP and 5 for honors. Weighted: 103.3 Note this GPA is as of June 2016, higher after Dec 2016.
•Rank: 3 of 500
•AP: Human Geography, Statistics, World History, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics 1, Computer Science A, Language and Composition, US History. Straight 5s.
•IB: None offered
•Senior Year Course Load: AP Literature and Composition, AP Physics C, AP Biology, AP Government (semester), AP Economics (semester), AP Psychology (semester), AP Music Theory, Academic Decathlon
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 3 medals at Academic Decathlon state meet, very high rank in AcDec, national merit semifinalist, NHS member, Eagle Scout
Subjective:
•Extracurriculars: Boy Scouts (Eagle, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader), Academic Decathlon (President)
•Job/Work Experience: none
•Volunteer/Community Service: Eagle Project, church missions
•Summer Activities: Church missions, Boy Scout high adventure, studying
•Essays:
Common App: 8/10
Rice supplement: 6/10, one typo in the extracurriculars essay that I found after submitting
•Teacher Recommendations: Physics teacher 10/10, she loves me, best student. Biology teacher+AcDec coach 10/10, best student, he loves me too
•Counselor Rec: No way to know, but we only see each other when she’s made a mistake so likely around 6/10
•Interview: 9.5/10, I am good at interviewing thanks to AcDec
Other
•State (if domestic applicant): TX
•School Type: Public
•Ethnicity: White
•Gender: M
•Income Bracket: Pretty up there
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy w/ both parents+extended family
Reflection
•Strengths: Legacy, SAT, APs, strong extracurriculars
•Weaknesses: Grades (2 B’s in sophomore year back when I didn’t try), not being Valedictorian, being a white male from TX
•Why you think you were accepted: Tested out of 2 years of math, took BC calc in sophomore year and got a 5, also all the other things listed above
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: UT Austin (automatic acceptance)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Get very good grades and test scores. Find two or three things you are good at and excel at them. Learn people skills and be prepared to answer common interview questions. Do the essays early, well, and get them proofread a lot. You will get in.
I’ve read this thread for the last week and a half and shared in the continual frustration and agony of the college admissions process. To all those accepted, see you in 2017! For those rejected and deferred, don’t give up hope. It’s not where the game is played, it’s whose on the field that counts. You aren’t worth a cent less today than you were yesterday (unless you spent at least one cent more than you took in, ok don’t take this too literally guys, I’m trying). Apply to other great colleges, make sure to have safety schools, and keep going.
Decision: Accepted

•Counselor Rec: 8/10 I’m sure she did a very nice job
•Additional Rec: N/A
•Interview: 10/10 I think I killed it with the on campus interview back in June
Other
•State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
•Country (if international applicant): USA
•School Type: Private
•Ethnicity: White
•Gender: Male
•Income Bracket: >$500K
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A
Reflection
•Strengths: Essays, interviews, major (sports management)
•Weaknesses: Potentially too focused (one dimensional)
•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I developed a nice relationship with one of the main sports management professors. We had many email conversations and a 45 minute phone conversation. He vouched for me with the committee and emailed me asking about my decision before I could even email him. He was amazing.
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to Rutgers and UMass, deferred from Northeastern, applied to UMich, UNC, and Miami, would have applied to NYU and Elon had I not gotten into Rice
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
Be yourself in the admissions process. I was myself, accentuated my differences, and took advantage of those differences by forging a vital relationship. I think I was a strong candidate anyway, but without my relationship with the sports management professor and him vouching for me I do not believe I would have been accepted.
