Another couple of questions, for those ED 2021 students who recieved Merit Scholarships, did the statement come in your admissions letter (either on Rice Portal or through the mail)?
Or did they appear in your Esther?
Also, will ED students still be considered for any other scholarships that are offered to the general admitted 2021 students and if so will ED students potentially be awarded scholarships around April?
One last, sorry for having so many questions, but does anyone know when FAFSA is due for Rice in particular??
@Rice1721 ugh i have reset my pin literally 5 times - I’m almost embarrassed to ask again. Guess I’ll call the office tomorrow. Let me know if you find a solution before me!!
Is there a groupme for admitted students?
My son is not on this so I will post for him to help out others.

Essays: Wrote about his love of the outdoors and climbing tall mountains. Why Rice he wrote about things that happened when he visited Rice specific examples of things he liked. Talked also about the engineering program things he learned while he went on the tour.
Teacher Recommendations: Latin teacher he had for 4 years plus his academic decathlon teacher for 2 years I am sure was excellent. He also had a math teacher reference. He had him for two years.
Interview: Yes when he visited he interviewed. He said it was relaxed and they did ask about his extra curricular. He left a resume with his picture. They never looked at it until he was done. So I don’t even know what he did with it.
Other: Applied for financial aid
State (if domestic applicant): Maine
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: self employed not sure how they figure out income
[li]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None though he tried to make his hook be that he wanted to be a trip leader for their school. He was definitely interested in planning trips and all his training and experience centered around that. He loves nature and the outdoors so he even incorporated a watered colored drawing and one of his dream trips and put it in the box.[/li]Reflection: Definitely showed interest by visiting, also went to two informational sessions in Maine. Also the interview helps, plus he send two thank you letters. One was late, but he was honest and said he was busy with applications.
He also did an online chat with students. He also followed them on social media as a way to learn about them.
Strengths: Test scores, good extra curricular activities, recommendations. Class rank. Unusual boy scout awards
Weaknesses: He did take a few college prep courses in social studies brought his grade down weighted gpa He did not have school extracurricular activities in leadership accept for the tutoring. They didn’t have that in AD or math team. I honestly think he forgot to put the tutoring on his his resume.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: showed interest had good achievements(unique)
Where else you are applying or have already applied:Tulane was accepted and since declined admission.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Find your passion for my son it was the Boy Scouts and try to stand out among all the others that do that activity. It is not how many activities, it is having a couple your passionate about.
