Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
BAND:

• 4 yrs of curricular band (2 years in uppermost level)
• 3 years of jazz band
• 4 years of marching band (section leader the past two years, drill sergeant this year)
• Band president (senior year)
• 3 years of Saxophone ensembles (last year the quartet played at Lincoln Center in NYC)
• 2 years of classical soloist concerts for the sax (junior/senior year)
NON-BAND:
Cultural diversity club/Asian Festival (2 yrs)
National Honors Society (publicity chair) (Senior year)
Artist show series (junior/senior year)
School newspaper (frosh/soph year) (head features editor, then quit)
Weekly columnist for the local paper (Senior year)
[] Job/Work Experience: Nothing
[] Volunteer/Community service: Webmaster for my local Red Cross chapter, but that’s it
[] Summer Activities: New Jersey Scholars Program was my only prestigious summer program, the others were all a mix of academic/musical non-prestigious programs
[] Essays: I was VERY proud of my common app and my “how do you bring diversity” essay; my “why are you applying to your school” one wasn’t as great. The other little one about “why rice” was also pretty strong, though.
[] Teacher Recommendation: From my math teacher who witnessed the climax of my math career (last year in calc was the only year I did REALLY well; the reason my GPA isn’t a little closer to 4.0 is because of my sophomore year and freshman year math experiences), so I think that was pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: She’s written good stuff about me before, so I think this one was good.
[] Additional Rec: My band director sent another one supplement to all of that, and he told me he spent hours on it just because of my overinvolvement in band on the whole.
[li] Interview: The 30 minute interview ended up being 2 hours long at the interviewer’s house because we had to much to talk about![/ul]
[/li]

Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Competitive Public
[] Ethnicity: Filipino/White/Hispanic
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Not getting financial aid, but I expect them to help me find ways to pay for this hahaha
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, OOS, Band, interesting life as detailed in my essays, showed MAJOR interest[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, URM, OOS, Band, Test Scores, HIGH demonstrated interest, good interview
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars could be a little more “prestigious” and I could have had more “accomplishments” BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER ANYMORE yay!
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, I have good “stats,” but so do most applicants to Rice. I REALLY think a combination of my hooks and demonstrated interest did the trick. Without the fact that I’m a mix of Filipino, Hispanic, and White blood (and Jewish, too), I probably would have just been another band geek girl. The ethnic diversity was definitely a strong point, and my diversity essay was about how I moved from London to my white bread New Jersey town five years ago. In terms of demonstrated interest, I did an official visit twice when I visited my family in Houston (once sophomore year and once junior year, both with info sessions), but I talked to MANY Rice students (and noted this on my app). When the Rice adcom for NJ came to my school, I was the only one at the info session (no one in my town has HEARD of Rice) so it was basically a one-on-one interview wherein she took notes about who I was and all that so that she’d remember me. Rice also waived my application fee because I was a high scorer on the PSAT and wrote them down at my #1 back in April. [/ul]
[/li]

**General Comments: VERY excited, VERY happy, glad that my work has paid off but I’m pretty humbled by all of this. Can’t wait to meet you all next year! To those who weren’t accepted, honestly, no worries. I wanted to go to Rice but I know I would have been happier at so many other places. A year from now, this feeling of despondency from Rice will dissipate, I promise! Annnd a BIG “MAZEL TOV!!!” to those accepted! **
