[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): TX
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Middle/Lower Class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Grew Up Loving Rice (Dad works there)
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My Interest shown in the school (Interviews, Overnights, the works), my strong academic commitment, my clear career goals, and the sorta personal vibe I tried to give the paper to stand out (I didn’t let anyone read my Rice Essay because I knew they would edit the personality out of it)
[] Weaknesses: Transferring to a school that had a lower academic rep Junior Year, not taking advantage of AP
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think the interest really did help. Being from Houston really does make it 50/50 on chances, but it all depends on how you utilize it. If you just expect to get in because you’re from Houston, then bad news, but if you can show early interest, they’ll remember you.

[] Country (if international applicant): N/a

[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: about 70,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/a
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My grades and extracarriculars were pretty good. I thought my essay was good but some people who I asked to look at it were iffy about it, so I’m not quite sure whether to put my essay in strengths or weaknesses…
[] Weaknesses: Test scores were okay but could have been a lot better. Could have had a stronger rec too.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted because my grades were good. It isn’t very easy at all to get straight A’s at an IB school, believe me.
[] Where else you are applying or have already applied: no where :3
[/ul]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:[ul]
[] Definitely get a lot of sleep before the SATs or you’ll end up like me and fall asleep during the test.
[] Do not wait until the last minute to get your app in; it shows interest if you submit it earlier and you also avoid huge problems caused by technical difficulties.
[] Ask more teachers for recs than you feel like you need. If you want 1, ask 2. If you want 3, ask 5. The one teacher that I felt like I could rely on for an outstanding recommendation didn’t submitted it. All teachers are really overloaded around college app time… be sure to give all your recommenders a nice Christmas present as thanks
[] Don’t brush off your short essays. Make sure those are as fantabulous (or even better) than your common app essay.
[*] Don’t sweat it about the box… I honestly don’t think it matters as much as people think it does. Just don’t be overly cheesy and put a picture of Rice. [/ul]

[] Summer Activities: Just took some courses over the summer, AP or College, but didn’t do any big summer schools.
[] Essays: I thought these were the best things I’ve ever written in my life. I wrote these all at once because my mind was fresh and they happened to be better than anything I’ve ever written in my opinion!
[] Teacher Recommendations: I had both teachers in my AP classes and I assume they were fine.
[] Counselor Rec: I barely knew my counselor because I just moved to this school in 11th grade, but from when we’ve met, i assume it was also good!
[] Additional Rec: I sent this in through the mail after calling Rice, and this was from a family friend I’ve had for 16 years. I think it was 10x better than the other teacher recs.
[li] Interview: I scheduled an interview on campus, and it went great! I was really nervous and got there at 7 a.m. when my interview was at 4! I couldn’t get there at any other time, so I just walked around campus slowly falling in love! [] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): lolololol, what awards xD
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Quizbowl Team (President), Key Club (Officer), Speculator Newspaper (News Editor), Green School, 121 Reach, LETS
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community Service: Volunteer tutoring at middle school, environmental cleanup (basic stuff, and not that many hours)
[] Summer Activities: Nothing really, I go to quizbowl camp every year
[] Essays: Pretty good, I guess, since I got in. Common app essay about quizbowl, background supplement about being Chinese-American. Nothing serious, I used A LOT of humor throughout all the essays. My box was a quizbowl question set with questions that pertained to my life specifically, idk, I though it was cool.
[] Teacher Recommendations: I’m betting that it was good. My quizbowl coach wrote it, and he knows I worked hard.
[] Counselor Rec: Not the worst, we’ve met frequently last year, but nothing special.
[] Additional Rec: Nope
[] Interview: Pretty fun, not really sure what to think. We made fun of medical school, so I guess that was a plus xD. Interviewer was really nice, but we were on a schedule, so we couldn’t talk for several hours.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My grades and test scores are pretty good, I think. My personality is like happy-go-lucky, so I really tried to drive that trough in the essays with humor and stuff. xD Also, I made it sound like my life revolved around quizbowl, which it kind of does at this point xD.
[] Weaknesses: I have so little work experience and volunteering. My essays also didn’t tackle any major conflicts in my life or deal with any serious issue, but that may have worked for me xD.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Ummmm, because I’m me xD
[li] Where else you are applying or have already applied: Well, I applied to some state schools early action. I was also planning to apply to UPenn, Northwestern, Duke, and WashU xD[/li][/ul]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Too happy to reflect, maybe later xD

[] Strengths: My strong focus on specific details about Rice that I liked (e.g. Baker Institute, teaching, research). My application and essays were as unique as I dared make them. I had perfect grades throughout high school. I interviewed on campus and it went very well. Unique extracurricular, one of which I explained very well in one of my supplemental essays. Strong but varied interests.
[] Weaknesses: Possibly SAT particular in Math; Lack of volunteer hours; lack of major awards and science experience.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My application stood out as someone who knew a lot about Rice. I also stood out as far as my essays and because I am from West Virginia.
[] Where else you are applying or have already applied: N/A
[/ul]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Good luck to all of you who apply. Be sure to show why you are unique because it is out of all of your extraordinary accomplishments someone else in the applicant pool also has many of those same accomplishments.

[li] Where else you are applying or have already applied: UT (accepted), some UC schools, Case Western[/li][/ul]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Be yourself! Don’t listen to those who say you can’t do it. Believe me, people at my competitive high school don’t think much of me, academic-wise.
So happy I got in, it has so much of what I hoped for! Distance, financial aid, academics, size, happy students, collaborative atmosphere, peaceful atmosphere, the atmosphere when it won’t be humid, just the atmosphere in general surrounding the beautiful campus, the atmosphere.
