Official Schedule Help

Thanks zjodak. CoE FPF’s only need 12 units though, since we need fewer humanities than L&S students and will most likely have AP Credit for something else, which I do. Will I be able to pick my professor for English R1B though? I signed up for R1A because I don’t know my AP score yet.

@zjodak
Actually, a chem (bio) major, but thinking about taking upper div phys courses for allied subjects later on. I’ll think about that (moment of inertia of a teardrop… okay…). Well, it’s monday vs. friday for the chem labs due to the math 53 lectures on tues/thurs afternoons, and… would you recommend labs starting from 8 in the morning on tues/thurs over afternoon chem labs on mon/fri?

@eyeheartphysics
Oh right, I forgot about CoE’s lowered unit min. Your professor on campus is determined by the section that you choose but I’m not sure how it works in FPF. The website for each department usually lists the classes they offer and you might be able to get some information off those websites.

@ 910eggmen
Taking upper div phys courses is a great choice for allied subject (not many people do it) but H7A is simply not the same as honors in high school. H7A is intended for people majoring in physics. Especially for your first semester, H7A + Chem 4A + Math 53 is a lot of work.
Tues + Thurs labs are preferable but an 8am class means that you lose the luxury of working on your lab/ making final touches to your lab reports on the day of your lab. If you can wake up early and work well in the morning then it may be a good choice.

Thanks zjodak! I’ll go back to my original plan for classes before I went honors physics crazy :stuck_out_tongue: Doubt I’ll be a morning person to do labs in the morning (although I found out there’s also a Thursday lab from 10 to 2 (so much for taking advantage of an early CoC calSO :P))

Just a quick, general question: would it be a bad idea to sign up for 2 classes that are directly back to back? Example: Class 1 from 9-10AM and Class 2 from 10AM-11AM

@ete invincible:
No, it’s not a bad idea. Berkeley operates on Berkeley Time which just means that classes actually start 10 minutes after they say they do on schedules. So your Class 2 will actually start at 10:10 AM and you should have enough time to get from Class 1 to Class 2 in those ten minutes. :)

Hi,
I plan on doing premed as either an IB or Psych major.
Would this schedule work for freshman 1st semester?

Asian American Studies R001A or German R005A-4 units, or whichever r&c is easiest
Chem 1A-4 units
Math 16A-3 units
IB Freshman seminar-1 unit
Psych 001-3 units, probably doing IB, should I choose something else? it does satisfy breadth

Thanks

Hey!
I plan on going to pre-med/nutri science major (how easy is it to switch from L&S to CNR?)

Anyway I plan to take:
Chem 1A 4 units (for pre-med)
Col Writ R1A 6 units (to satisfy my entry lvl and 1st semester r&c req)
Math 16A 3 units (will this work for pre-med? it works for nutri sci major)
Nutri Sci Fresh Seminar 1 units (this is currently full with 6 ppl on waitlist. how likely am I to get in to this seminar? should I just wait for 2nd semester and take the premed101 decal class instead? if so, do I sign up for the class during orientation?)

For 2nd semester I plan on taking:
Chem 3A 3 units (for pre-med)
Asian Studies R2B 4 units (will the col writ R1A be a prereq for this course or would I have to take Asian Studies R2A to cover my 2nd semester?)
Math 16B 3 units
Nutri Sci 10 3 units
Nutri Sci Fresh Seminar or the premed101 decal class.

what do you guys think on the course load?

Also which teachers would you recommend for the courses above? thanks for the help!

Also in addition to my classes I plan on applying to be a RA, be involved in research, try to get a job? for my work-aid, and just be involved with the community

Hi, I’m starting my first semester at Cal as a transfer student next fall. I heard that you should only take 13 units your first semester a million bazillion times, but . . . I don’t know, I got sort of offended when again and again and again people seemed to suggest that I can’t even fathom the workload of a Cal course. I’m wondering if people actually do take just 13 units their first semesters because personally I think being behind would stress me the hell out.

Anyway, I’m an English major and am wondering if this would be too much work/reading my first semester:

 1. Eng. 45B, which is a prereq I didn’t complete and need (4 units)
 2. Eng. 45C, which is a prereq I didn’t complete and need (4 units)
 3. Any upperdivision course I can get into that fulfills the American Culture requirement. I’m looking at either ethnic studies, women’s studies, or history. (4 units)
 4. An upperdivision history class as an elective, because I like history and government and all the poli sci classes are already really full. (3 or 4 units)

My goal is to take 15 untis, and to me that doesn’t seem all that unreasonable, especially since I think I’ll enjoy the subject matter. Should I be second-guessing myself?

Here’s my plan for EECS:
Math 53
CS 61A
Physics 7B
Probably English R1A
Maybe another decal? I really want to do something music related.

Hi, could someone tell me if this would work?

Asian American Studies R001A or German R005A-4 units, or whichever r&c is easiest
Chem 1A-4 units
Math 16A-3 units
IB Freshman seminar-1 unit
Psych 001-3 units, probably doing IB, should I choose something else? it does satisfy breadth

thanks

Question! I am taking:

Physics 7A -4 units
Math 53 - 4 units
Engineering 10 - 3 units
Chinese 1AY - 5 units

 • seminar? maybe E98

How do you guys feel about a giant block on your schedule? I have planned out a schedule that is ok except for wednesday where i have classes from 9am till 5pm with no breaks. The upside is that i only have 3 hrs of class friday and 4 hours on tues and thurs
Is it possible to eat in some classes like in lectures or labs?

How’s this for fall freshman?
L&S undeclared but probably poly sci

Asian American Studies R2A (R&A) 4 units
Intro to Nutrition (Breadth) 3 units
Political Science 2 (perquisite) 4 units
Intro to Statistics (QR I know, dumb me) 4 units

15 units total

easily doable? I wasn’t sure since there’s that recommended 13 units thing. Also, I heard that there’s a 10 minute separation between classes, is it better to have 1-3 hrs between classes or the supposed 10 minutes?

I’m a fall freshman doing bioengineering. Would this schedule be tough?

Chem 4A 4 units
E 10 3 units
Math 1B 4 units
BioE 24 1 unit
History R1 4 units

I’m taking history because it sounded like a fun class and it fulfills the second part of the reading and composition req. (I got a 4 on AP english). Has anybody taken history r1? Should I?

Chem 4A is for Chem majors so it is a REALLY intense class. Don’t underestimate the Chem at Cal because it sure can be very nasty. I would highly recommend taking Chem 1A.

I’m a freshman at L&S with absolutely no idea what I’m going to major in…
so heres my schedule:

Asian American studies R1A (But if i get a 4/5 on AP LANG, i’ll take R1B… but would that be difficult cuhs classes are full bythen?)

Public Health 14

Math 16A (or 16B?) ( I took AP CALC BC and got a 5, so I’m not sure whether to take A or B… any suggestions??)

Sociology 3AC

Freshman Seminar

Altogether, this is 16 UNITS. which is over their recommended amount…
And I also wanted to take a DECAL.
is this WAY toomuch or probably manageable??

I’m looking into possibly majoring in PUBLIC HEALTH but i have no idea still…

I have just made several threads about my schedule but I thought it would be a good idea to still post in this thread now that I have looked over it. Haha, I know this is a whole lot to read but I have my CalSO tomorrow and I feel like I am not prepared. Plus some of these questions can’t be asked from the counselors.

I am in the CoE as an EECS major.

These are the classes I’m considering. The areas where I have questions I have posted a paragraph with my questions.

Math 1B
CS 61 A
phys 7A or chemistry

I have taken AP phys C in high school. I have only taken Honors Chemistry in high school. Is it recommended that I take one class before the other? I only ask because in the sample schedule chemistry is always listed before physics. Furthermore, is it a smart decision to skip phys 7A if I 5 the AP Test? Will the material be something that I need to keep with me throughout EECS classses? Lastly, if I do decide to take physics 7A, should I take it in the first semester to have a class whose material I am familiar with so that my first semester is more relaxed?

Humanities Course (Phils C25A or an English R&C course or a generally easy course)
Upon looking at the list of the available courses that meet CoE requirements, I saw that I would really like to take Phil C25A. Is this course an easy one? If it is not, should I opt out for an easier class or stick to what interests me? I only ask this question because I do not want to be overloaded with work in my first semester. In addition, I see that I have the option of starting on my English requirements. Is taking the English course that satisfies the R&C requirement a wise choice in my first semester? Consider that I will be skipping English 1A due to AP credit.

Lastly:
I am in the CoE as an EECS major. Is it common to take a seminar in my first semester to decrease the overall workload? Furthermore, in which phase are freshman seminar courses picked? I would think phase 2 because classes such as Phys, Chem, and Math etc. usually tend to fill up quick. Am I right in thinking this? Lastly, can someone comment on the quality of Eng. 98? That is the “The Survival Guide to Berkeley Engineering" class.

anyway? – a one unit seminar and decals are not really “classes.” I don’t mean to belittle them in any way, since I plan to take both, but they don’t carry a large and hard coursework unless the subject’s totally out of your comfort zone.

Sorry if some people have already had their CalSO, but I’ll still give feedback.

@thomaslgo
Your schedule seems just about right. I think taking psych is a good idea since you are interested in it and it fulfills a breadth; you’re not losing anything by taking the class. For your R/C, check the professors on ratemyprofessor.com to see if they have good feedback from past students.

@intense
Your schedule looks fine for 1st semester. Don’t count on getting into the seminar. Most seminars have about 15-20 people so for you to get in means that about 25% of the class have to drop the class. In most cases, taking a seminar isn’t worth it. Go to office hours if you want to get to know professors. It is really easy to transfer into CNR. Just talk to their advisers when school starts. (I hear that CNR advisers are extremely helpful)

@FeeFee34
You seem to know what you’re doing, so 15 units wouldn’t be too bad. I think those who advocate 13 units do so because students need to adjust to being away from home and being in a new environment. However, I’m going to say that your schedule is a bit intense. English has a reputation of being difficult at Berkeley so try not to underestimate Eng 45B and C. For your AC, Ethnic Studies/Woman’s Studies should be fine but do you really need to take an Upper Div? Ditto for your history class. Plan out your schedule and see if what you need to take for the next two years and plan accordingly.

@pet0sh
A lot of technical classes, but since you’re EECS, you’re up against a lot of technical classes. Maybe take a music class (like Music 26AC) instead of R1A for your first semester. Math 53/CS61A/Physics 7B seems pretty much standard :(. There are also 2 unit musics courses if you are interested. Those seem to be very popular classes (math,CS,phys) so have a back-up class in case these fill up. Remember that even if you have enough AP credits to be a sophomore, these don’t kick in until next semester so you will be considered a freshman.

@turtlecloud
Yep, tough schedule. Have you considered taking E7 instead of E10. I already stated this somewhere else in this thread but taking these classes out of order is usually better than taking them in order because there are more people in your class who either failed the first time around or are a bit behind because they decided to major later or what not. Chinese is one of the harder languages and 1AY is accelerated (you’re expected to be at the same level as native speakers (1AX) by next year). I recommend taking a humanities instead of Chinese. You will still be able to finish the highest Chinese course available (100B) by the end of your senior year if you start your sophomore year. Finally, no breaks from 9AM to 5PM is usually a bad thing. Some professors may get upset if you eat in class and you will be very tired by the end of the day. Try to change around your schedule so that you don’t have a huge block of classes.

@aeboi
Yeah, looks fine. Did you check if PS3 fulfills the QR requirement? Easily doable, just don’t get behind and do the work the professor assigns you/go to lecture. There is a 10 minute gap between classes (known as Berkeley time). Having 1-3 hours between classes rather than back-to-back classes is up to you. Having many 1 hour breaks is usually useless because it’s to short to do anything meaningful (imo) but some people like these tiny gaps between periods to go over notes for the next class and go over what you just learned in lecture. It depends on how you study.
