My son’s official schedule shows in the Student Center now. The classes are the same as we saw at SOAR. It shows his registration time as being Aug.18th at 3:00. I think he plans to leave it as it is, but I am sure he will look at available classes anyway. He has 13 units towards his GPA and then 2 units for credit/no credit. It is a lab. So basically 15 units. Sounds good for the first quarter. I was happy to see the Calc III teacher’s name finally listed officially. She is supposed to be awesome!

Check your portal everyone. Things are really getting serious now!

I saw that, too! At first I thought she still had the math classes, but I notice it says “dropped” next to them. There’s an option to hide them, though. Things are moving along here! :)

I’m not sure how the units work. Can you decipher this for me? (below) Right now they have her signed up for 3 classes=12 units. She hopes to add another one.

All the units that are currently “passed” or “taken” as well as the units taken not toward GPA are from all of her AP tests or Community Colleges classes that she’s passed, I presume. The “In Progress” are obviously the units that she is signed up for with her block schedule.

2Leashes^ I have looked for the same type of info for my son and I can’t quite find it. I see that he has 45 units/credits for the 5 AP classes/tests he took. It does not break it down the way you have it. I know you D took some CC classes as well.

I do not understand the Total Grade points 66 and only 16.5 toward the GPA. Was that the CC classes? Sorry I am no help. Where did you find this info on the portal?

After I went to the Student Center, I clicked on Grades and this information came up. (scroll down a little.) I haven’t asked my daughter yet if she understands what it all means.

My husband is trying to encourage her just to stick with 12 units this first quarter until she acclimates to the school and particularly the fast-paced quarter system. She would like to add Psychology, but not sure if that’s going to happen since she has the 12th rotation. I told her just to add another elective that doesn’t involve a lot of work or studying. Well, she’ll see what’s available on the 19th at 4 PM, if she decides to add anything at all. I just remember Dr. Bailey, Dean of Science of Math telling us that they won’t graduate with 12 units every quarter. On the other hand, she can always make up for it later. And, my husband did say that she already has some units toward her GPA coming into Cal Poly.

I went back and looked at those numbers again and can’t figure out what the 27 *transferred *units **not **for her GPA means. Or the 66 grade points. I assume that the 16.5 are from AP exams and maybe the c.c. units?

Momofmv and 2Leashes: I think I can shed some light on this subject.

First of all credits earned from AP exams do not count toward any GPA (Cal Poly GPA or Higher Education GPA). So that explains why Momofmv’s son has 45 units for his 5 AP tests. (25 of these are probably only elective credit that won’t count toward an engineering degree, the other 20 probably counted as five 4-unit classes unless he took APUSH and APGOV).

Transferrable CC courses do count for Higher Education GPA, but the number of units can be confusing. This is because CC classes are usually 16 week semesters, and Cal Poly classes are 10 week quarters. 2 semesters = 3 quarters, so CC credits are multiplied by a factor of 1.5 to determine the number of credits earned at Cal Poly.

So, 2leashes, it looks like your daughter has 27 non-GPA credits (probably for three AP exams) and 16.5 GPA units from CC classes. Did she take two 4 unit CC classes and one 3 unit CC class? That would transfer as 6+6+4.5 = 16.5 units. If she made A’s in all her CC classes that would give her the 66 grade points.

My son is an incoming freshman in Food Science. Unfortunately, we couldn’t attend SOAR because he has been working all summer at a sleepaway camp and couldn’t get away for it. His schedule has just been generated (I think - the main page says it’s still being generated, but it shows up on the Student Center site). He’s only got 13 units - 2 FSN lectures, 1 FSN lab and a cultural geography class. That seems a bit paltry.

Missing SOAR, he didn’t get a tutorial on how to register for classes or advisement on what other classes he could take. Another complication is that we’ll be in Mexico when his registration time is set. We aren’t taking a computer because we’re afraid it will be stolen, so will have to rely on whatever computer resources there are available if he wants to change his schedule.

My question is whether he should just accept the schedule that’s been made for him and then figure out how things work (for his future classes) once he starts school, or try to get into another class for his first quarter. He’s talked to someone a year ahead of him in the same major who went to his high school who said he could definitely handle another class.

Any recommendations/suggestions will be much appreciated!

Oh, that’s a tough spot. If it makes you feel any better my S did not find SOAR to be that helpful in schedule planning–but to be fair, I think he was a bit distracted since it was only his second visit to campus. If you are staying someplace where you have access to a computer it would be best to try to add a class during his registration time. If not, maybe a trusted family member at home could help. The recurring theme at SOAR was to NOT drop any classes until you were able to add another. The PASS system is very self explanatory on the portal. Good Luck__also there is “open registration” after Aug 23 and he could add himself to a class then or put himself on a waitlist.

OCMOM56, I suggest viewing the web demo on PASS and CPreg. These are available on the Registration and Enrollment page of the mycalpoly portal. The demos and the two programs are pretty intuitive. Use PASS now to find additional classes of interest that have space availble. Then when the time comes, find a computer in Mexico, log on to myCalPoly portal and try to get one of those classes using CPreg.

Again, the planning (Pass) and registration (CPreg) processes look pretty intuitive. We did not go to SOAR either but I don’t think you needed to go to figure these programs out.

Thanks Mariner116 and ss1202. I think he should call tomorrow to see about what other classes he’s required to take. It’s a bit confusing whether he needs to take some of them because of AP credit or not.

Also, one screen says he’s enrolled in a class, another screen says he’s waitlisted for the same class. And the weekly block schedule doesn’t even show all of the classes he’s supposedly enrolled in. It’s very confusing.

Thanks ralph4 again! My son has only taken 5 AP classes and he got 5’s on all of the tests. he never did a cc class. He didn’t take APUSH or APGov. He took Calc (B/C), AP Bio, AP Stat, AP Psych and AP Human Geo. These helped him quite a bit. he wishes he would have taken APChem, but I am thinking that the Chem series at CP will be better anyway. It is important for his major as you know. Too bad so many of the credits are elective credits and engineering students don’t get those. It will all work out…Thanks again!

ocmom526^ That is confusing about his schedule and the waitlisted class. It sounds like adding one more class would be a good idea for him. The advice of a student in that major is useful.

I agree that the PASS and CPReg tutorials are good. I hope you can get access to a computer in Mexico and add something he needs. Like you mentioned, calling the school is a good idea. Best of luck and enjoy Mexico!

OCMOM526, when looking for classes on the weekly schedule make sure to select 7am to 9pm in the time range. Several people have found “missing” classes were early or late, and not visible until they expanded the time range for the display.

^^ You’re right, Mariner116. Since my daughter’s classes don’t even *begin *until 4:10 PM and 6:10 PM, we definitely had to refresh. Her last class is over at 10:00 PM.

Even though my daughter took 5 AP classes, she decided to only take three AP exams. Those were in AP Bio, English and APUSH. Passed them all, but I think she said she doesn’t get credit for the History exam. And that was her highest one. My husband was telling me that now he’s glad she had to take those math classes at the community college. At the time, he thought it was a pain. But, it was obviously to her advantage. She said she preferred it because they were a semester instead of the whole year. Of course, they were more intense and longer hours.

My husband is encouraging my daughter to keep her schedule at 12 units. He feels that it will give her time to acclimate to the quarter system. He also said that since she already has 16.5 units toward her GPA, that she’s ahead of the game. So, does it make sense to stick with 12 units? I suppose since she had all of her math at the college level already, it wouldn’t be much different than if she was taking a math class this quarter. I’m just curious if others at Cal Poly who came in with c.c. units kept their first quarter less “course intense”.

I think its a good idea to keep it at the max.(16 credits, altleast during registration time)
I’m coming in with c.c. credit/substantial AP credit and plan to take the most i can because classes are harder to get later on.
Unfortunately, my max is only 13 credits because one lecture class i have gives me 1 extra credit that prohibits me from adding another 4 credit regular class. :(

2Leashes: It really just depends on the student. If you daughter stresses out over school/grades, then I would say 12 units the first quarter is good.

My son never stresses over school/grades (and needs to be MORE concerned with his grades). He entered Cal Poly with 42 CC credits and 4 AP tests passed. He took 16 units each quarter his freshman year, but his situation was different from you daughter in that he wanted to change his major. He had to take one class each quarter in his original major while completing the 1st year requirements for his desired major.

So after 1 year a Cal Poly, he has 114 higher education units earned, but only 64 that actually count towards his new major – CSC. (The CSC flowchart requires 44-48 units per year to keep pace for the 4 year plan).

Bigxcman: You should be able to add another class if you want starting Aug 23rd. That is when “Open Enrollment” begins for all students and max units are increased to 22.
