Please post here if/when you get ur scholarship packet...

Still waiting. Did you get your packet, archdelux? If so, when? Were you happy with it? Still waiting here.

Package arrived yesterday. Got 19k scholarship. Now we have to decide between CWRU and UR for BME. It looks case is better for BME. Case gave 18k. Can somebody comment on Case and UR

matt123: No, waiting for the mail...

DadcpBME.. What were your (sons?) stats?

i received the rush rhees scholarship of $10,000 a year. i am very excited and will most likely be attending UR next year!!

Rush Rhees is quite an honor. Congrats, ilovethecold! Where are you from & what do you plan on studying?

Dadcp, do you mean 19 in total, because max is 12 for scholarships

It really depends... Today i just had a thought that I am very glad I chose UR (in same situation as you with Case) because I don't think Case has as good as an atmosphere as UR. Also remember the USNews rankings are very very very very very screwed up (don't trust them for program rankings... they ranked some college top for a program where they did not have a program in). The hospital relationship at UR seems alot better than with Case and that is one thing I was looking for since I am going into BME...

As for scholarships I got Rush Rhees as well as another 2K scholarship and then 5K for grants

you are correct. I just confirmed that one is 10k another is a grant for 9k.

I got the Rush Rhees scholarship as well. My parents both went there, do you know if they still have the children of alumni 5k scholarship? I assumed so, but maybe not.

D received Dean's Scholarship of $5,000/yr.

DadcpBME : UR has already a great BME program, that is recognized nationally, and they are working hard to link it to optics and such (optics is number 1 at UR) . Also, take into account that there is a new BME campus being built at UR, so the prospects of this all ready good BME program turning into another UR all-star program is very likely. (the construction will be done June 2006) CWRU also does not have the same over-all prestige of UR in my opinoin, as UR is a good school over-all, linked to the hospital, Simon School of business (23rd in the nation), superb polysci, and a great research/science premed body (which is also present at CWRU).

My son's came today: 8K "Dean's Scholarship" and 14K grant. Also quite a bit in student loan and work study. He's got better offers elsewhere.

I got the 7000/yr Dean's scholarship.

A lot of people in this thread and the other scholarship thread have been saying they received a scholarship and then a grant. Are the grants everyone is talking about need based or merit based?

my grant is need based

texasmom, I am extremely surprised that UR offers the least aid.. I would think it would offer the most... :?

I thought that before I opened the envelope. I got a total of 13K in gift aid. That leaves...$30,000/yr to be made up. Bummer.

Yeah, RPI gave me $5,000 more per year.

I got $10,000 Rush Rhees, and $7,000 university grant, the rest in loans and work study. Most of my NEED based packages are better than that. Cornell might actually be cheaper. . . . .god, I never thought I'd say that!

I got into both Cornell Arts and Sciences and U of R. . . .so I have an insanely tough decision ahead of me.

I love both schools, no matter where I go, I am going to feel like I left something behind.

bhbase99: The way I read UR's web site, all grants, loans & work study are need based, while all scholarships are merit based. Also, merit scholarships are awarded by admissions office while need based awards are determined by the financial aid office. Hope this helps!

matt123: thanks. I understand it now.

Our grant was definitely need based.

Hopkinslax: my son applied to schools that meet 100% need with the exception of Wake Forest. He got substantially more from Carleton and Pomona--more like 29K "free money" (grant/scholarship/not loan), which means less loans and less work study. It is up to the school as to how much "need" you require, so there is some wiggle room.

U Rochester was fair, I can't complain about that. He just has better financial offers in his other schools.
