Aid is given to fill the gap between EFC and scholarships, workstudy, student loans.
Suppose for ex:
school total costs: 43k
scholarship 10k
grant 15k
loans 5k
workstudy 2.5k
student summer job contribution 1.8k
In this case your EFC is close 10k.

But if your EFC is 30k, then you get only merit scholarships. Merit scholarships are nothing to do with EFC. we all know this. I hope this is clear.

Does anyone know how to appeal aid from URoch? I really really want to go, but I can't see letting my parents spend 100k+ on the first of 4 children to put through college. I really can't complain about the package, it came relatively close to my EFC, but it was still short of what I needed to attend. As it stands now I'm probably going to a state school rather than any of my top choices, simply because I can't afford them.

Did UR snailmail the merit-based scholarship mails? I'm an international and am still wondering, the postal system in this country is quite lamentable.

SS1987: I live in Texas and I got mine on the 1st... They said 7-10 days after they send ur acceptance package...Call them.. maybe they will be able to tell u over the phone since it is so late..

We are in the midwest and still not have received our scholarship/grant package and am curious. I like the idea of a phone call, think we'll do that tomorrow.

DadcpBME, we visited both Case and U of R on the same trip. We certainly enjoyed the Case campus better, very eclectic I t hink is the word I'm looking for.

My son is interested in Mech E so we focused on those departments but I did notice their is a huge childrens hospital right on the Case campus for those interested in that.

Case gave my son a great aid package but we kind of thought (by reading online reviews) that the aid from U of R might be better. After reading this thread I am not so sure.

mominin,
I probably won't have time to call tomorrow, so if you call them and post what they told you on this thread I will greatly appreciate it.

can someone explain to me about the 12k cap? Say if you receive the renaissance scholarship, which is full tuition, wouldnt that go beyond the 12k cap? Also, anyone here actually received it? What kind of qualifications should you have? Thanks

Just now getting back online, sorry ss1987. I did not call them, we ended up getting our package in the mail yesterday (we're in the midwest). 8G dean's scholarship and 17G aid, the rest loans and work study. Although generous, son announces this is probably not the school he wants to attend.

It's okay mominin, I have send U of Rochester an e-mail asking about my fin aid statement. Hopefully I will be receiving it in the mail shortly...
I am sure your son will make the right college decision, and I want to congratulate him on his scholarships. Good job!

Yes, $38,000 per year.
Well, what I meant was UofR's financial aid package was smaller than other schools' pakcages.
I do know that I have received a good amount of scholarships and grants though.
