stupid mistakes for math...and writing needs to go up :(

First try:
CR: 800
M: 630
W: 740 (MC 75, essay 9)

total: 2170

Fairly pleased! :) Math went better than expected; I'm a bit disappointed with the writing.

I think it's funny how 99% of us are disappointed in our scores when a lot of us score 100's of points better than hundreds of thousands of other people. :P

I don't want to censure too much here, but I think some of you suffered from a bit of over-confidence or cockiness on the May 5 exam. As I tell all of my students, you MUST be a little humble when you approach the official exam and take nothing for granted, or those careless mistakes can sometimes translate into hundreds of lost points. (One common mistake, by the way, is not ALWAYS using ALL of one's time on a section. Finishing early on a section is ALWAYS a mistake (which is only somewhat mitigated by returning to certain questions and checking one's work).) That is why I am always concerned when students come back and report that a test or a section was "easy" or that they are confident they did very well. The best response (from the students who generally did the best) is that a test was "okay" or even challenging or when a student can pinpoint certain mistakes or questions they were uncertain about. Ironically, it's the students who are a little unsure of exactly how they performed right after the exam who usually turn out to have done the best. This shows that they paid attention to details and walked into the test with a proper regard for its difficulty and trickiness.

Essay 10

i am really happy!! but--and i know i sound like a total snobby it's-never-good-enough CC-er--should I retake it? I want to apply to some combined programs, which are really really competitive. Is it too risky, or unappealing to colleges (because of my score) to retake?

I would recommend retaking if you are going to apply to some of the top programs in the country, only because your CR is a little low (but it's still a good score). Just make sure you don't completely neglect studying for the Math and Writing sections, too, the second time around!

sari, it's definitely not unappealing since it's understandable that somebody would want to get at least 700 on every section since that's usually the minimum standard at a lot of Ivy Leagues. Now, if you got a 750-790 on everything and are greedy and want a 2400, then that'll definitely not look so good.

Wait....

How are you guys viewing these scores? I can't see mine. I don't know where to go!

Gosh, I'm really upset now...

Total: 2150
CR: 760
M: 650
W: 740 (12 Essay, 69MC)

Thats a 110 drop from my first time in Jan. (2260 - CR: 780, M: 760, W: 720 - 10 Essay).

Is this going to look really bad? A 110 drop in math...and I'm asian too. Granted my cumulative is 2280, but is that really what colleges look at? Should I take it again...=(

sweet. thanks for the replies, godot and clove.

godot, what'd you get?
