OFFICIAL Second year housing thread

housing applications are due in less than 2 weeks.

lets discuss the options.

bice or lamebth?

do we need to know people who will be living with us or can we just have random roomates?

Lambeth > Bice

Bice is nice, great location for classes. Newer facilities

Lambeth has more people, so more opportunity to head over to your friend's place next door. Also it's perfect for BBall games and concerts with JPJ right across the street.

I spent a semester in Bice with mix of friends and random people. The random people ended up becoming better friends of mine than the people I went in to the apartment knowing.

Do we have to fill up all 5 choices?

Can i just put lambeth and bice or should i pick 5 options just to be safe?

there is a significant chance you wouldn't get either of those. if you put no preference after that you'll end up in any of gooch, copeley, etc as they want... i would at least put gooch as a preference over copeley... on the other hand, if you're not applying with a group you should get whatever your first preference is (there are always 4th roomies needed in lambeth, and i know there were empty beds/bice roommates needed at the beginning of this year).

another note, don't be afraid to room-change-request. my roommate and i got put on the 3rd floor in brown for 2nd year(07-08) and we didn't really like that extra flight of stairs so we asked to switch rooms for 3rd yr(08-09). then, they put us in a room next door!! this was because housing made a lot of mistakes last year, lost all of brown's roommate requests, etc... anyways we requested to be switched to a room on the 2nd floor anywhere in brown and they did it for us. so if you don't get your first preference, put in a room change request and it might go through (the larger your group, the harder to change - if it's only you, most changes can be made super quickly, but even 2 people meant it took them until july to switch us to a 2nd floor room).

I recommend living off Grounds.

IRC's where it's at. :)

could you please make some specific recommendations for off-grounds housing?

Depends on what you want... price, location, type of housing, etc. Give us ideas and we can help. Many of us on here are off-grounds.

ideally, a 2-bedroom to be shared by 2 girls within walking distance to grounds. on-grounds housing will be about $4500 next year. Grand Marc, for 2 girls, with utilities would probably run close to $10,000 for each girl. ouch. surely there must be something safe and not too far from the e-school somewhere in-between. they don't need the apartment amenities like a swimming pool and fitness center that are already offered on grounds. thanks very much!

A few I can think of: Oxford Hills, Ashtree Apartments, places farther down JPA, Wertland Commons, 15-something Wertland, and some of the efficiency places along 14th/15th.

I suggest having your D start calling some of the bigger rental companies and ask them for available places (Wade Apts, Woodard Prop, CBS Rentals, MSC Rentals). Most have sheets and/or books that they can see all of the company's properties.

How do I get out of gooch/dillard?

You need to a) turn down your contract. Gooch/Dillard is never filled, so you can easily get a contract again in the spring if needed.
b) watch hoohasit.com and all those other sites to see someone giving up their bice/lambeth contract. It won't be immediate, but it will happen as people get opportunities to move off-grounds.
c) keep your options open. You may have to move off-grounds. You may not have perfect roommates. But if Bice/Lambeth is what you want, it's obtainable. Also, sign up for the housings waitlist. People transfer out or go abroad and they can put you in those rooms.

Find something off-grounds, or sign the contract then apply for a room change (although this is in no way a guarantee).

I wouldn't sign it. Wait it out. I got a place in Lambeth in May when I transferred.

Is there any way your entire group can apply for a change to Bice/Lambeth? Or will we need to look off-campus if we want to stick together?

thanks for the very helpful info, shoebox10. my husband is picking up our 1st yr. daughter right now and they may swing by to check out some apartments before heading home (she's the one who got, and doesn't want, dillard). she's anxious now to sign an apt. contract sometime over winter break. i'd really prefer her to be in lambeth/bice. but, should she not get off the waitlist by may, i'm wondering what the availability of off-grounds housing would be at the point. any thoughts?

Kmc: it's highly unlikely you'll all get moved. Maybe one or two together, but that's all you should hope for.

olette: there's plenty of apartments left. Houses go extremely quick, but most apartment units don't become full until later in the spring. There are some places that do fill up quick in the fall, but there's going to be plenty left, especially over break.

Can someone shed some light on Lambeth? I am in a group of 4 and next year we have been placed in a recently renovated building. How many other suites are in each building? Generally do most people prefer to live off-grounds? We explored some off-grounds housing but realized, as OOS students, we really couldn't furnish an apartment well without having to pay loads more.

I applied alone. What's the chance of getting into lambeth or bice now?
