Hello CC,

I know it’s early to be asking questions about SEO program. I have a question regarding the selective process. I have a 2.96 GPA at UIllinois (Champaign-Urbana). I plan to apply for the third round which is around January 31st I believe. So, that I could build my GPA to be 3.0. My work experience is not that great, nothing related to the financial field(all restaurant, construction experience). In addition, not that many clubs that I joined. Although I plan to join as many clubs in the Fall semester.

I’ve been researching SEO in this forum and it seems like everyone has a GPA>3.5. Also, I feel that you would need to know a lot about stocks, math, etc… to be successful in the place you are going to work placed by SEO. Any specific focus I should concentrate into when applying for SEO? I was thinking about Accounting/Finance, but I saw a PPT presentation saying that you need to have 3 accounting courses with a B grade in all of them.

<---- This was not answered previously and would like an answer please.

Could someone explain what SEO is?

I am applying for it. What do you mean by how far are you in the application? I just checked the website and it still is not up yet. Does anyone know when it will be up though because it says they will put it up “late August/early September” and it is already mid-September.

yea it is pretty ridiculous. More time to follow the market, I suppose. Where are you all from and what division are you hoping to apply to?

I’m planning on applying for Investment Banking.

the application is open!!! Good luck everyone! I am sure we are going to be ridiculously stressed and busy in the coming weeks. Where does everyone go to school?

Im a Junior at NYU Stern majoring in Finance and Marketing.

Yeah, I saw that. It seems like there is only one essay question and it’s only supposed to be 2000 characters. I guess selection mainly depends on GPA and your resume then.

What area are you applying to wooden?

investment banking corp fin is my first choice. I am not logged into it now, but I thought I saw 2 other 5k character essays.

How about yourself?

did you mean there is 1 5k character and 1 2k character in the “additional info” section? Btw I am applying for corp finance too. Anyone know how important the SAT scores are?

I am an SEO Alum. Feel free to use me as a resource.

DealMaker: what program were you in, and how would you recommend studying up for the interviews, in terms of like technical stuff and current events? I know we should read WSJ and stuff, but is there a section there in particular you would recommend looking at? Any finance blogs that are 19-year-old friendly?

I would also be interested in knowing some details about the selection process. What should I emphasize on my resume and essays (for the IB position)? It seems like the website emphasizes community service and diversity. Does SEO specifically look for these on an application or would I be at an advantage to speak mostly about finance experience?

Like woodendynamite, I also want to know about your background in SEO. What department did you work in? When? What school? What do you do now?

Woodendynomite:
I was in the Investment Banking program.
I recommend you study a few announced M&A and IPO deals that are currently going on. The NYT Dealbook blog is a great place to get current deal information.

If you study the vault guide to finance, you’ll be covered for technicals.

In regards to the WSJ, I’d look into sections which cover the cover the area you wish to go into. For example, if you want to be a health care banker, I’d focus on stories which cover that industry vertical.

IMO, the most important thing is that you have a compelling story as to why you want to do SEO and why you want to work in your specific career program.

Hello everyone. I am also an SEO alum from last year in the Sales & Trading Program. The advice I can give you guys is just stay up to date with what is going on in markets and that can be by reading the WSJ, The Economist, or FT, watch CNBC or Bloomberg every chance you can (keep your TV on those channels), or read articles from Yahoo Finance.

You don’t need to be a expert in every market. You just need to have an opinion about the market and talk about it in detail form. You should have an opinion about where the economy is going, the stock market, the dollar, and a stock pitch. Right now the whole news is about the Feds and QE2 so they may ask questions about that.

These investment banks want someone who is hungry, passionate, competitive, team-player and want the job. Good Luck and trust me, next summer will be the best experience of your life.

How do you express “you are hungry”? thx!

I would just like to get an idea of how competitive SEO is and how competitive each position is.

What is the amount of applicants that apply to each banking section (asset management, research, IB, s&t) compared to how many spots there are for the position?

this might be a stupid question, but by “essay question” you mean the optional questions right?

What ethnicities are eligible to apply for SEO? I’ve looked all over the site but it simply states individuals ‘of color’.
