Official Sept. 16 ACT Reflection

Math was easy reading i screwed up on

Yeah that whirlwind.......

I have one thing to say and one thing only: the last passage on the reading test about whirlwinds was the hardest i have ever seen on the act. Way more difficult than any of those simple passages on the real act book. It was excruciating. Science once again was very hard and with very little time. Overall= average performance. Left NJ at 3:00 am took the test at the hill and came back at 5:00pm. My commendations to the helpful staff and mannerly student body at the hill. Although we tested in the gymnasium, the proctors were considerate and organized.

"I think for reading I got stuck on the whirlwind passage and then math there were too many confusing word problems, and not enough of the simple questions they had in princeton review or the real ACT book."
You said it. Where were the simple absolute value questions when I needed them? There was a lot more convoluted wording than normal. This test was without a doubt the hardest act since the last 2 or so years. That whirlwind was just impenetrable!

DID anyone here take the test out of state? If so, how was the experience? Did you get lost?

wow I'm glad everyone thought it was hard. haha
yea the english section was somewhat weird..
and math was definitely hard..(I usually finish 10~15 min early but this time, I barely finished and guessed one question).
whirwind passage was so confusing and picky (plus lack of time).

can anybody compare this one to other previous tests?

Joycelene,
How could you grasp that whirlwind passage? I just starting it when the proctor called, "5 min left." I tried to glance over it, but what I saw was just an abstract intracy of air pressure, raising density, sand dunes. There were too many facts for me to get anything.

anybody know when we can start discussing questions?

What was so hard about the whirlwind? It wasn't that bad. I found the answers in the passage. I didn't even read that passage too much. Just skimmed over it.

This is starting to give me doubts. I'm not that smart when it comes to reading. Did I read the questions wrong?...Oy...

If anybody wants to talk on AIM, I can set up a chat room or something... It might be easier that way.

On this test, the math questions involeved word problems and functions much more than previous tests. I have seen older tests where the question simply says, "Which of the following numbers are prime?" or " what is the period of y= 2sin 3x ?" There was no such straight forward questions on today's test for the most part. The first three english passages were very similar to that of previous questions. The whirlwind passage was the hardest, most detailed reading piece I have ever encountered both on the sat and act. The english section didn't have any surprises and the graphs/tables on the science section also were a bit more complex than usual.

Bottom line is today's test was probably the hardest in recent years.

Visali, that stratedy might have worked for you. But when I started the reading, the proctor had already called the 5 min notice. I tried flying thorugh the first paragraph, but realized it just contained too many facts about meteorology; thus i had to resort to skimming as well, which is not my usual stratedy--reading the whole passage under 4 min."

Wouldn't you say it's okay to talk about questions when the kids on the west coast have had their break before the writing test, which should have been about 3:30 eastern time?

Mark19: Skimming over passages makes me mess up easily especially if the questions is asking for details. I can't wait until I get to see my score.

I followed a strategy that was posted in this forum for the reading section. Read the first pasage carefully. Then, skim over the last passage. Finally, work on the middle two at a slow but not to slow speed. When they called time, I was on the 3rd passage.

I didn't read it too much. I just went straight to the questions. Probably not a good idea.

I'd say its okay to talk about the questions now, the West coast got out about 2 hours ago.

What'd you guys get for the solution set for 60

domain 0<(orequalto)x<2pi

sin x (1 - cos x)

was it [0,pi] ? I graphed it and found the zeros.

when do we get to know our scores? In 2 weeks? The proctor said 4-7 weeks.. uh??

when do the results come out by the internet

and yes..the math required a lot more precalc than usual

Same here, but with a different strategy that typically works for me.

solution was pi/2 and 3pi/2, i think.

Does the curve change when the test is hard?

yea when I first saw the polar graph, I was like holy~!!
but the question itself was nothing.
