Official September ACT Reading Thread

That wasn’t even the answer nor the question. I’m pretty sure the answer didn’t even state that there was a contrast between his reaction and the lizard’s. Obviously, there was no contrast. The answer was formed in such a way that the word contrast made sense in the context of the passage and the question.
Why bother asking a question if you don’t want a different opinion than the answer you gave?

Look guys, I agree that question was stupid. Even though it seemed like the unorthodox answer is out of place, it is still correct. I remember very clearly why I didn’t choose the contrast option, because they had similar reactions as stated in the passage. -1 will still be a 35.

^ agree

“Many customers want very recent best-sellers, often so they can feel they are reading something trendy, something other people are talking about. Of course, that’s its own kind of affectation—and not an entirely pleasing one.”

the answer was trendy

The one about the intro paragraph of the Hawaii passage where it talks about caskets indicated that he was head of state?

yes it indicated that he was an important head of state. no other answers made sense

And was the guy leaving San Francisco to go to Hawaii because I remember him talking about the Golden Gate located in San Fransico?

which guy? the king died and was on the way back to Hawaii and Nani always wondered why her father never returned to Hawaii

I believe it was a different question

It was concerning the status of the narrator

oh, the one where it asked how the narrator wrote the passage? the answer was “as an adult, looking back on past relatives” or something

No it wasn’t that one either. It was concerning his location i think it was the 3rd or 4th question

What was the answer to the question regarding when Nina was expected to be on the ship. Was it due to her occupation

It was her occupation, right (don’t remember what it was)

is that the one with the option: she’s been on many trips before.
did anybody choose that for an answer by the way? because it says “yet” another trip

Any ideas on the curve? I think it’ll be like -1 =35 -2 or -3 =34 -4 =33 -5 =32 -6 = 31 or 30. Do you guys agree? Can someone who has taken the ACT before tell us how this reading section compared to the other ones? Was it harder or easier?

I thought that the boat was coming FROM Hawaii… Is that correct…because another option was the boat was going to Hawaii… I think the answer had to do with the relationship between Nina and the king ( her occupation)

The answer was definitely unorthodox. I was thinking about putting the one with contrast, but I realized there was no contrast, but rather a similarity. The unorthodox didn’t make much sense unless you read the next paragraph, where it talked about how other people supported this method of his eating a test subject, which is indeed unorthodox.

Sure, unorthodox doesn’t make much sense, but that’s what make these tests so stupid and different from tests you take in school. There is no definite answer and you’re not supposed to pick the best one; you have to find the one that sucks the least.

can someone explain how the grasshopper tasting question was unorthodox? Because I was vacillating between that and contrast and I went wiht contrast because the unorthodox question seemed totally irrelevant. It’s not really supported anywhere in the passage, and the author makes no attempt to prove on a point that scientists sometimes take unorthodox methods to prove hypotheses

More questions on the grasshopper one asap
