***Official Stanford 2013 SCEA Decisions****

QUESTION:

im new to this forum, i just joined today.. so can anyone fill me in on what URM and SCEA mean? thank you :)

amciw, after this, I have no idea. But I would imagine so. From hearsay, it just seems that Stanford is amazingly 'random' -- even in the Law school and stuff.

A Law school alumna, mother of my best friend, told me a few weeks ago: "And Stanford...Impossible! They just don't like white people."

Clearly not true, but the idea still comes through...It just seems like they're trying to give opportunities to those who haven't had them but would do something great with them. Is this bad? Of course not! Do they accept kids with hooks and tons of opportunities? Of course. Heck, I'm one of the lucky ones (no hooks though). But...it just seems like they are looking for something slightly different than HYP.

SCEA: Single-Choice Early Action
URM: Under-represented minority.

URM = under-represented minority
SCEA = single choice early action

Decision: Rejected pooooooooop

@baelor: yes I know hooks aren't the only way, I'm just saying that they are a plus and that people shouldn't try to deny it. We know they're all very qualified anyways, just that people shouldn't ignore their presence.

and tbh, I personally think the difference between domestic vs international is far greater than the difference between urms and otherwise. from my own experience, I've found that outside of the US, people only apply if they have something really exceptional (there are still crapshoots but fewer)

General Comments:
Definitely got in because of my computer science. I have published a couple of papers and presented at a few conferences, and made my passion an plan to continue very clear.

Wilbest, your rejection has officially made me not feel bad about the decision anymore. To those who responded with my quasi-chances questions, thanks. I guess I'm looking forward to hearing from Y and P now, if I do have a better chance. Maybe they are a better fit, anyways. You never know.

And btw, I've decided to be nice and still root for the Stanford football team, even though I won't be going there. I love seeing smart people do good at football, and more importantly, beat USC (and Notre Dame, which they better do next year.)

[li] Why you think you were denied: prolly my essays. [/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I know stanford admissions are a crapshot, but I feel that I should have at least gotten deferred. Sorry if I come off as kind of bitter. I just read the email a couple minutes ago and my brain is still trying to process. Oh well, c'est la vie. Stanford was only like my "dream" school. Anyways, CONGRATS to all who got in. I wish I were you right now! :)

rejected..too depressed to post stats

Wow. This year's class really was good. I'm EA for UChicago, and we still haven't heard yet. It looks like admissions this year were really rough though, all of your stats are stellar. Congrats to those who got in, and to those deferred/rejected, just keep your chin up, you'll get into somewhere better in RD anyhow. Stanford doesn't create your happiness, you do.

For everyone who applied, it's so pointless in stating "rejected/accepted stats later!!!" Post the stats while you're here, because without your numbers/ECs/etc, you're not concrete parts of the data. So for the sake of everyone else on CC and future applicants, just freaking post your stats. It honestly can't take that long.
Not to be a major pain, but if you post on CC, you cannot complain about having to see people who are accepted. Haha, it's CC. CC's collective stats are (typically) at the... upper end of the spectrum.
To whoever said don't post acceptances, that'd completely ruin the point of this thread.
