Holy crap, Stanford killed you guys--for absolutely no reason, it seems, everybody's stats are absolutely incredible! What happened...?

I can only hope (irrationally?) that Yale is a little bit nicer to me! But I'm sure that won't happen.

Guys, congratulations to EVERYONE. I CANNOT believe some of these rejections and deferrals, and my heart truly does go out to you. Admissions this year have been ridiculous.
It is with regret that I write to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission to the freshman class at Stanford University. Please know that this decision does not reflect any deficiency or weakness in your application. To the contrary, we are humbled by your talents and achievements and of all those who applied for admission this year.

Unfortunately, the large number of applicants for a relatively small incoming class means that we must disappoint the vast majority of very well-qualified candidates each year. Our decision is a reflection of that competition for admission and in no way should detract from the very impressive credentials you presented. We appreciate the effort and care that went into your application and I want to assure you that your candidacy received thorough and serious consideration. As a result, we are not able to consider appeals to this decision. To find some answers to the most commonly asked questions about our admission process, click here; I hope these will address any questions you may have about our decision.

I know this is disappointing news to receive and for that reason we will not send a duplicate notification of this decision by mail, unless you request one from us. If you wish to request a copy of this letter by mail, you may do so here, and one will be sent immediately.

_____, you are a fine student with solid support from your teachers and advisors and I am confident that you will enjoy great success in your undergraduate education. I only wish we had room for everyone with qualities and accomplishments like yours.

My extra curricular activities are real and cannot be construed as ploys to get into college. I am an Eagle Scout who dedicates hundreds of hours to helping my community.
I have acted as the assistant director of religious education for my Catholic church's Sunday program (we have over 300 kids.) I started out as the assistant to the nun who ran it. Being in her 80's, she had to leave for medical reasons. I acted as the "transition manager" to help show the new director how to run the place. Ever since all new staff members ask to meet me to learn the modus operandi.
I am also a member of one of our nations leading high school bands. A member of the Jazz band and the Wind Symphony, I am very dedicated to music.

I was probably the only person able to indent their essays. I defeated their formatting program.

Dear Sam,

Congratulations! On behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Admission, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to Stanford’s Class of 2013.

You have every reason to be proud of your accomplishments, and we are honored to invite you to join the Stanford community. Since our founding in 1891, Stanford has been defined by students and faculty who endeavor to push the limits of knowledge, and who share a commitment to extending that spirit of exploration and excellence beyond campus. This is a community of scholars dedicated to what Jane Stanford, co-founder of Stanford University, called “the cultivation and enlargement of the mind.” Your application clearly demonstrated that you have the intellectual energy, imagination and talent to flourish in this environment.

The materials in your admit packet (forthcoming by mail) are designed to assist you with the enrollment response process and to provide important information for you and your family as you consider your enrollment options. Whatever decision you make, please know that you have until May 1, 2009, to confirm your choice.

Over the next few months we will continue to send you additional information about Stanford and Admit Weekend, a three-day program scheduled for April 23-25, 2009. You also are invited to visit a preliminary version of our admitted student website, http://admit.stanford.edu, developed in conjunction with Stanford students just for you. More features will be available on this website in the coming months. Should you want to contact us for any reason, please do not hesitate to call our office at (650) 723-2091 or email us at a special email address specifically for admitted students: admit@stanford.edu.

Please note that your admission is contingent upon continued strong academic performance in the program of courses you presented to us in your application. If you consider altering the courses you will pursue for the rest of the year, please contact us before finalizing any changes.

Sam, we are all confident in the unique and extraordinary contributions you will make to our community. We once again extend our congratulations on your admission to Stanford University and look forward to welcoming you to our family!

Hey guys,

Congrats to those who have been accepted and I'm sorry to those who weren't offered admission. I was reading through this thread when I recognized someone who I don't actually know in person but am friends with on FB. I know how much he wanted to go to Stanford, and I've been devastated for the past 10 min that he didn't get in. Other friends were deferred/rejected by Penn today, and it looks like it was a rough year for Stanford SCEA. The Yale kids are jumping out of their skin for decisions, and many of us will face similar fates on Monday (I already know I will). Some of you have amazing stats I could only dream of having, and good luck to you. Great things are in store for you no matter where you go.

[] Job/Work Experience: Lifeguarded at a university pool (5/07-Current)
[] Essays (subject and responses):
Main: About a guy I met while I was at work; very unique.
Roommate: More or less a laundry list of quirky habits I have. Probably not like a deal maker, but interesting.
Why Stanford: Talked about diversity and wanting more in my life. I weaved in Stanford's motto. Kinda corny probably, but it was honest.
Intellectual Vitality: Talked about the irony of materialism. Interesting, but probably not what they were looking for.
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent. I went to Italy with one of the two.
[] Counselor Rec: On the upper end of the spectrum.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Felt fantastic - it really added something to my application, I think. We met at a starbucks and talked for nearly an hour.
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): I don't really know if this counts, but I consider being an IB Diploma Candidate and 3rd in my class at the same time kind of hook-ish.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Denver, CO ftw!
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): IB, but it's a magnet program (2000 kids, ~400 are IB).

[] Income Bracket: 200K+/yr (Parents are both doctors)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None that would make a difference.
[] Strengths: Class Rank, IB Diploma Candidate, Varsity Tennis Captain, Teacher Recs
[] Weaknesses: ECs in general, Test Scores were low (relative to Stanford apps)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Test scores could have been higher, I could have shown more ECs, and more leadership in those I performed in. If I'd had some kind of recognition other than NMS Commended, it would have probably helped me stand out a bit.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: The regional AO visited my high school and met him and asked insightful questions and he eventually asked for my name and looked like he was going to remember me. Just an fyi.

I roll with what happens in my life. Just gotta fill out the rest of my apps and realize that the numbers dont let all qualified applicants go, etc. and do the best I can! Good luck to all RDs and defers!
