Hey, another Yale applicant here. All of us over at the Yale board are in complete shock over this. So many of you totally deserved to get in. We're just preparing ourselves for the same come Monday. So all of you amazing people who got rejected or deferred have my sympathies. You'll definitely get in someplace awesome, although I can only imagine what you're going through right now. I guess I'll know what it feels like on Monday. Good luck with the rest of your apps. And congratulations to the few who got in!

I was saying my prayers, just about to go to sleep, thanking god for everything I have and asking for an acceptance when my phone vibrated. I turned it on, and the first line destroyed me, a deferral is worse then a rejection...

Dear Darius,

After thorough evaluation of your candidacy, we have chosen to defer your application for further consideration in our Regular Decision process. We greatly appreciate the thought and effort that you put into your application and acknowledge your strong interest in Stanford University. You are among a small group whose applications will be re-evaluated during Regular Decision. Notification of final decisions will be sent in early April 2009.

The reasons for deferring a final decision vary, but in many cases we want to see first semester, senior-year grades or want to have the opportunity to review a candidate in the context of the entire applicant pool. It is nearly impossible for us to predict the chances of gaining admission; however, in each of the past three years, approximately ten percent of deferred candidates have subsequently been admitted during the Regular Decision process. While we hope your interest in Stanford continues, we advise you to pursue other college alternatives as well.

Between now and April, we recommend that you continue to strive for the highest level of academic attainment and keep us up-to-date on your progress. Please ask your school to submit the Mid-Year School Report (which can be accessed from the Common Application website) and updated transcript to our office as soon as your first-term grades are available. We also invite you to submit an electronic Optional Update Form (located here) to keep us apprised of any of your new activities, achievements, or new test scores that you may have received. We ask, however, that you refrain from submitting additional recommendation letters. Be sure to include your Stanford ID number (located at the top of this letter) on any correspondence that you have with our office.

With best wishes,

Richard H. Shaw
Dean of Admission and Financial Aid

[] Job/Work Experience: taught tennis over the summer.
[] Essays (subject and responses): Common Application essay was pretty generic, which may have been a problem. Could have been better. The intellectual vitality one was about creating a website for my school paper, the roommate one ended up being about music, and Why Stanford? was pretty detailed and well-written.
[] Teacher Recs: I can't read them, so I don't know. I think they're pretty good though.
[] Counselor Rec: she likes me, so it should be good.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): went pretty well, imo.
[] Hook: Legacy, but being Chinese is an anti-hook.

General Comments: Sucks, but oh well. There are other schools out there that I can still get accepted into, and it's all God's plan. He clearly has something for me other than Stanford in my future so I'm not too sad.

taught piano to student before.

...

...

So what now?

Well I have it going good for me in grades so far. All A's for grades right now, and I am expecting that they will stay that way till 1st semester's end. This might be a great plus since I might get an A in AP lit, when one of my only B's on transcript was for English in junior year. Plus it shows that I am getting straight A's even with a ridiculous courseload, not doing senioritis, and that I am still doing it while spending lots of energy on sports.

I will tell them about my Varsity Water Polo Top Scholar athlete award (which im pretty sure ill get), acceptance into a large SoCal orchestra (if I get in), my working on a piano concerto to play as a solo for school orchestra, school orchestra carnegie hall trip, and intentions to keep on swimming. Also I will express new interest in teaching student's math. How I have helped them a lot, and have used it for myself in enjoying math.

IONO sounds like a good plan to me. GL with those who got rejected, and my condolences to those who were rejected. Really. My brilliant friend just called about getting rejected and I felt really bad for him =[
