[ *] Letter to Roommate Essay: i liked this one. began with a warning about my enthusiasm for vonnegut and then wrote in reverse time, from what my roommate and i would be doing at stanford going back in time to the point we met… i was rethinking it over, and i should have put under short answers for historical moment “time i got into stanford”, but that would have been too risky haha.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220. 770 Reading, 670 Math, 780 Writing. I only took it once.
[] ACT: 35 (my math was a 34 on this, which I think offset my relatively low math score on the SAT)

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar, AP Scholar

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science National Honor Society (1 of 5 officers, we don’t have specific positions). National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society (we only had like one meeting though because the teacher left the school). Architecture Construction and Engineering Mentor Program.
[] Job/Work Experience: I have worked as a cleaner/janitor to help support my family for the past 4 years. My mother’s side of the family are all immigrants, and so they became cleaners because it is hard for them to find jobs. I began cleaning with my mother to help her because she basically has two full time jobs. I clean a dentist office five days a week, and occasionally I help clean restaurants. 400+ Hours
[] Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer at a hospital. 140+ hours. I am also a writing tutor at my school’s writing center.
[] Summer Activities:I continue my work as a cleaner, except I take on more hours and I also clean houses during summers.
[] Essays: I think they were really good, probably some of the best I have written.
[] Common App Main: I wrote about how I almost died while visiting family in South America when my bus almost fell off a mountain in the Andes.
[] EC Short Answer: I wrote about my work as a cleaner and the struggle to maintain my grades with a demanding work schedule.
[] “Profile” questions: I just wrote about me and my passion for food and other cultures. I also wrote about how I had previously planned on foregoing college altogether in order to become a professional cook/chef.
[] Intellectual Vitality Essay: I wrote about how people don’t realize that humans are still animals and much of our interaction is still dictated by the primal instincts that have governed us for thousands of years.
[] Letter to Roommate Essay: I wrote about how when I was little my dog would come into the room in my apartment that my brother and I shared just to eat our toys. I compared him to a serial killer leaving the mangled remains on the floor for us to find. I tried to make this one a little more humorous.
[] What matters to you and why? Essay: I wrote about how my immigrant past and the sacrifices my family made coming to this country inspire me to be successful so their sacrifices won’t be in vain. I tried to put a lot of passion and emotion into this one, and I think it turned out really good.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both were probably really good, one was from my AP US teacher who once got an award for writing an outstanding letter of recommendation. The other was from my chemistry teacher who I had for two years.
[] Counselor Rec: It should have been pretty good, she really liked my writing and asked that I never give up writing even though I want to be an engineer.
[] Interview: I think it went pretty well, me and the interviewer bonded over having both worked for our families when we were young.

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Income Bracket:<100,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation college, lower income.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Good ACT score, rigorous course load, probably one of the only janitors to apply. Good essays. I feel I’m pretty well rounded when it comes to math/english/science.
[] Weaknesses: SAT was sort of low, I didn’t do anything too remarkable.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was mostly accepted because of my essays. They really showed how motivated and hard working I am.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
I was actually quite surprised that I got accepted, I thought at most I was going to get deferred. I’m even more surprised after seeing all the great applicants that got rejected. Good luck to everyone with all of their other college stuff.

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Art supplement, legacy, luck[/li][/ul]General Comments:
So excited that I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to my dream school.
To future applicants: be confident with what you’ve accomplished so far. If you’re applying to Stanford, you’ve probably already accomplished quite a bit! Don’t overwork/stress excessively about the essays. I think that a quick, genuine response will give you just as good a shot at admission as any other essay. Proofread obviously, but don’t belabor the process and put a lot of stress on yourself. Good luck!
To my fellow admits: I’m so excited to meet all of you!

Wow, this thread just shows Stanford is all about affirmative action, legacies, and sports. I feel bad for all the people who actually deserved to get in, but had their spots taken by people with incredibly inferior resumes who fit those special categories. It’s indicative of our society moving from one based on merit to one based on politically correct handouts and reverse discrimination. I’m all for supporting poor, disadvantaged minorities, but when affirmative action means middle-class/wealthy blacks and hispanics can get in over poor/average whites, you know colleges have gone too far.

^^ the truth!!!

lol @ zonis20 and punjabx; there are plenty of “average whites” (as you call them) with no hooks who got in just fine, me included – I’m pretty sure your “spot” wasn’t taken by a URM. and anyway, there’s no way for you guys to know by looking at these stats how everyone’s essays / rec letters were, so to assume they have “inferior resumes” is pretty ridiculous.

^^^??

@Zonis, Not really… Stanford just looks for an eclectic mix, and it differs per year; I don’t think that scrutinizing CollegeConfidential Accepted Threads for generalizations is a wise choice. As always, there’s going to be a lot of people not posting their stats, etc. and you don’t know exactly why they got in.

Each gets in for their own reason, and rarely does actual talent go overlooked for mediocrity… I’m sure you, PunjabX and Zonis, have incredible resumes and will go to incredible schools, just not Stanford, it’s not a big deal.

^exactly. I also felt a bit apprehensive about how many legacies and URMs got accepted, but like mightykim said, it’s not all about that. And zonis and punjabX, if you think about it, like really think about it, there was so much more that we could have done/accomplished that we didn’t, or that was the case for me. in the end it’s all about you whether you get in or not, and at the same time rejection doesn’t weigh as much as it feels like it does now.

Yay inconspicuous racism! (not the AA).

lol…zonis you can’t just say that because of the arbitrary handful of people here who happened to decide to post their decisions. i got in w/o legacies and with the anti-hook of being asian, and seriously, if anyone should be complaining, it should be us XD

it’s a damn good thing Stanford is starting to implement alumni interviews. True colors are revealed with adversity. I’ve never seen so many bitter yet entitled applicants who blem others for not getting in. You didn’t get in because you weren’t a legacy, or an athlete, or urm? For some of you, get over yourselves.

You are so right, Blah, it’s really obnoxious to see how many bitter people indulge in that kind of thinking every year at this time. It’s also amazing how people can just choose to ignore information that conflicts with their chosen narratives. E.g., there’s a report just above your post from a Native American (probably the ultimate in URM hooks at every school in the US) who was not admitted, which is but one example of the fact that hooked candidates aren’t “taking away” all the spots from the other “more deserving” applicants.

From this thread so far, there have been 56 results posted. Out of those, the following number were admitted, rejected, and deferred

Accepted: 32 = 57%
Rejected: 19 = 34%
Deferred: 5 = 9%

I’m sure there’s some bias on this thread, as rejected people probably wouldn’t want to post their stats as much as those who were accpted, but still, those percentages seem incredible to me!!! 57% accepted??? Obviously people who use college confidential have a dramatically increased chance at Stanford. haha

In addition to some people not wanting to report their stats when rejected, there’s also the fact that people on CC gnerally know more about the process and plan better than people who aren’t.
