[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred: deferred at Yale and Princeton (I ranked Stanford 3rd, never really thought about west coast college)[/ul][/li]General Comments: I took the time and effort to fill this out because I want to just show that you don’t have to have like 2300+ SAT scores, or be #1 in school or have started your own organization and everything. I would say I’m super lucky but I believe this was God’s doing to be honest haha, I feel so blessed! Anywho, just trying to give hope to others out there. It doesn’t hurt to just apply!

Well, my mom has been unemployed for a year and a half so the only reported income we have is coming from gov’t benefits, that doesn’t mean I don’t have access to internet or something like that. I’m not a ■■■■■ whatever that is haha

I’m normally all for Stanford bringing in applicants through QB, but it’s comments like this that make me feel Stanford should rethink how it participates:

“I ranked Stanford 3rd, never really thought about west coast college”

How could you even consider Stanford without ever really thinking about “west coast college”? It makes me sad that applicants like you waste Stanford’s time, and worse, that you might call home the same university I do–of course, assuming that you don’t get into your other choices and are “forced” to consider the West Coast for college.

For what it’s worth, I sincerely hope you get into Yale or Princeton or some other college worthy of your complete consideration.

When you spend hundreds of hours of your own time and effort (a few years, too) to help out QuestBridge applicants and those who are accepted/attending, comments like that are really off-putting.

Lol yeah damn phantasmagoric, relax. Stanford was the only west coast school I ranked through QB also and I definitely wasn’t seriously considering it until I got accepted. Can the applicant live?! :)

It’s not that it’s not her first choice–I advise tons of students not to rank Stanford first if it isn’t their first choice (especially since Stanford is the most popularly ranked #1, with well over half of the applicants)–but that she apparently never really considered “west coast college.” The idea that someone would put him/herself through the grueling process of QuestBridge without being 100% certain that they want to go to that college (which is the most important requirement stated on the QB site)–and in this case, doesn’t seem to have considered it much–is just upsetting. She’s very lucky that Stanford is one of the few colleges not to bind the student to attend, which is, after all, the whole point of the program (so it’s almost like applying ED to a school you didn’t consider much, all for gaming purposes).

That makes me even more sad. Thankfully the QB students I have worked with are much more thoughtful on the whole about the process, **before **and not after.

Looking past that though with respect to an acceptance, perhaps this is her chance to really consider “west coast college” for what it’s worth and she may eventually choose Stanford after months of the university sitting on her conscience.

I completely agree. While I tend to hold that you should explore a college fully before applying (as do most counselors), I do realize that some students come to love a college only after applying/getting in/attending. But QB is different; the program requires you to be very certain, since low-income students can’t afford not to be. It’s extremely competitive, and she was given a match spot probably over someone, another low-income, disadvantaged student, who truly did consider “west coast college” (and Stanford for that matter).

I see what you’re saying. But admissions officers are generally ignorant of which student wants to be at their universities more when making their decisions. Maybe the student applied to Stanford with QB because it did not required her to be certain due to the fact that Stanford is SCEA. Therefore, the flippancy is perfectly valid, in my opinion.
