Decision: Rejected

This is why you shouldn’t procrastinate on your apps… :/

[] SAT I (breakdown): 2390 (Lit 800, Math 790, CR 800)
[] ACT: 33, but didn’t send it

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering at local forest preserve and local prairie preserve
[] Summer Activities:[/ul] traveling to china, summer school, work

Writing (Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: I did “topic of your choice” and wrote a detailed essay on my nerdiness. Not unbelievably profound, but fairly down to earth and cute. (9)[/li][] EC Short Answer: About my involvement in and passion for my school’s environmental club. (9)
[] Intellectual Vitality: absolute FAIL…procrastinated like crazy and made some glaring, unforgivable errors that caused the essay to be terribly confusing. (3)
[] Roommate: Brilliant, but definitely not enough to make up for my first essay. (10)
[] Why Stanford: Well-written, though I think my lack of research/effort may have been apparent. (8)
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: My science teacher really liked me and probably wrote a nice rec. She recommended me for the science award. (7 or 8?)
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: My English teacher adored me (in an acceptance speech for me, he claimed I was one of the best writers out of the 3000+ AP, honors, and Academy students he had taught…a claim I find highly doubtful, but certainly to my benefit). He is also an exceptionally good writer. I expect that this one was especially good. (9 or 10)
[] Counselor Rec: I’m pretty close with my counselor, so I think he wrote a nice review. (8)
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: n/a (not in my area)
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Last minute–11:58 p.m. on January 1. I didn’t even have time for spellcheck.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large public (2500+ students)
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Upper middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Ain’t got none. [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, Recs, some of my essays
[] Weaknesses: Lack of involvement and leadership in extracurriculars
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because I BSed my essays. I think something’s pathologically wrong with me…I procrastinated on every single one of my college apps. My Stanford app is the one that was hurt the most.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] I would have started my essays a good month earlier. Even a week or a couple days earlier…not at 6:00 p.m. on January 1. It was completely stupid of me to think I could get away with writing the essays at the last minute.

General Comments:

Though I am a bit disappointed that I was not accepted, BY NO MEANS do I think that, had I started my essays earlier, I would definitely have been accepted. That’s simply not true, or even reasonable. I just know that, by procrastinating so badly, I basically erased any chance I had at acceptance. I had a shot, and I screwed it up :/

At least I have Berkeley Engineering to cheer me up :D

[Comment on my decision!](<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/stanford-university/824165-official-stanford-rea-admissions-2014-discussion-thread.html"]Comment”>Official Stanford REA Admissions 2014 Discussion Thread - Stanford University - College Confidential Forums)

[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 100,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy (mom went there for undergrad)[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: High test scores, well rounded, passionate.
[] Weaknesses: No super cool awards.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was initially deferred possibly because they wanted to see the results of my Biology M test, which I took in November of 2009, which may have been a minus cause I took it at exactly the time when they couldn’t see it and schools that I must have been planning to apply RD would see it (ie clearly Stanford wasn’t my everything).
[/li]

After being deferred, I
-sent them a short Z*inch.com post saying they were still my first choice (why do these forums think Z i n c h is profanity?)
-chose them as my number one college once I became national merit finalist
-used the link they sent me in the deferral email to send them an update in Feb about how I got an excellent rating at a music fair, won a couple awards at a regional science fair, and had chosen to continue with 0 hour chamber orchestra my second semester.

Dunno how much the above contributed, but I was finally accepted at the end of March!

[li] What would you have done differently?: I would have either taken my 3rd SAT subject test earlier or not listed it in my application since they wouldn’t get the scores anyways. I would have committed to taking 0 hour chamber orchestra my second semester in my initial application.[/ul]
[/li]

why should “gay” have any thing to do with your admission? That sounds like reverse discrimination right there…don’t you think?

looking at your scores, I’d venture to say it was your EC’s maybe more than your essay…wow…pinning your hopes on a letter from the Japanese teacher…yeah, there’s a meal ticket

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] none i think, possibly hispanic helped

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: high-level internship/work experience, essays, curriculum taken, SATs, gpa, ap scores, varied extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: no leadership other than editor and principal violin I guess, some ec’s were not done all through high school
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: my essays were really “me”, tough course load with good results, good testing, great recs i think, well-rounded
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] what i sent worked, so nothing then!
