Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App: 8/10. Idk, it was well written, but I wasn’t a huge fan of it. It was almost too deep haha.
Supplement: 9/10 Tbh it’s the same supplement I used for like 10 other schools. I had a basic skeleton and then I switched out parts to make it more Swat-specific. It was kinda cute and quirky though, so that might’ve helped? Content-wise, I think it made me seem very interest in Swarthmore.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Counselor: 7/10 just because I have no idea
English teacher: 9/10 she told me it was very very strong
History teacher: at least 7-8/10, but I’m not really sure
Additional rec: 7-88/10 Mock trial coach

Interview: Didn’t ask for one
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Well, I hit yes on common app, but then never turned anything in, so…
Intended Major: Poli Sci and Peace and Conflict Studies
State (if domestic applicant): PA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: South Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >200k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc): None

Reflection: Getting a likely made me much more interested in Swat. I kind of only applied because my dad wanted me to, but now I’m so glad I made that last minute decision. Hoping to visit soon to get a better feel for it.

Strengths:
Weaknesses: Common App Essay? I’m not really sure. Subject tests could have been better.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Not really sure! Definitely wasn’t expecting a likely letter (or even normal admittance). I guess my numbers were good and they saw something in me? (Maybe diversity? Asians aren’t URMs, but Swarthmore is pretty white…)
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Temple, Rutgers, NJIT
Deferred: Yale

General Comments: I’m really thankful for this. Swarthmore is a great school, and knowing that I got in early (especially with Ivy Day stress) is an amazing feeling.

@marshmallowpop‌ congrats! When did you receive your likely?

@marshmallowpop‌ Congratulations! Did you get an e-mail or letter? (or both?)

This is very interesting to see. I don’t recall anyone putting one of these up on a Swat board, but of course I could be wrong. In the past, students at Swat haven’t seemed to see any reason to post or discuss individual stats.

(deleted)

@livewithpassion‌ @diligenceandluck‌ thank you! I received a letter on Friday, through regular mail (not email). I live pretty close to Swat though (~1 hour away), so maybe there are still some being received?
@momof3sons‌ I’m only posting stats because when I applied, I wished more people before me had posted stats. It was difficult for me to gauge the academic profile of a Swat student, and at the time, I would’ve appreciated more information.

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, ECs, Grades
Weaknesses: Testing
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Unique academic niche combined with decent test scores.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred UPenn, Accepted UPortland, Willamette.

General Comments:
I’m sorry this thing isn’t very detailed; I find that attempts to describe one’s application in detail become highly subjective (see: the thousands of these that list their essays as “the best they’ve ever written”).

For underclassmen: Find something that is both impactful and interesting to you. Doing computer work for a charity warehouse was a way for me to help my community while improving my programming skills. Something like this will boost your application on two fronts without seeming disingenuous,

For seniors: Edit your application until you feel good about it, then pray. College doesn’t matter.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): The x/10s are total guesses

Teacher Rec #1: English teacher (Creative Writing, Poetry), Taught me to love poetry as an anti-art sophomore. She’s publishing a poem I wrote in a book about teaching soon. 8-9/10

Counselor Rec: Probably very good, I have a good relationship with her. 8-10/10
Additional Rec: 2nd English teacher (Modernism & Post-modernism) I didn’t want to ask him at first because I didn’t have him until senior year. I’m glad I did though, he’s probably my first if not second favorite teacher of all time. 9-10/10
Interview: Oh geez I did this a while ago and I probably wasn’t super coherent. 4-5/10?

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Philosophy
State (if domestic applicant): IL
School Type: Public selective lab school
Ethnicity: biracial
Gender: M
Income Bracket: ~150k, I think
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: ACT, Essays, recs, maybe job experience/ECs, although IDK how seriously they take non-classical music. They should take it very seriously. Diversity, too.
Weaknesses: Not very well-rounded (3 humanities recs, no stem, 31) GPA, maybe? I mean, a few Bs seem like not that big of a deal to me. Interview. Bad essay on the ACT
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good tests, essay, recs, ECs (IMO) diversity (which probably helped with the early letter).
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: U of Minnesota Twin Cities accepted

General Comments: Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t bow to academic pressure–I probably could have gotten a 4.0 and 36 ACT, but I would have killed myself doing it, and lost out on extracurricular opportunities. This really takes a load off of my mind in terms of college stuff, Swat is one of my (3 or 4) top choice schools, and now the anxiety about getting into the others is more or less gone. See you guys in April, yeah?

Oh, I deleted my last post on this thread because it contained potentially identifying information, this one should be better.

@salter, Remove the “a” in front of “acolor” and “asize” to fix the header.

Also, what’s with people who seem to be very obviously good writers (like you) all getting low-ish scores on the ACT essay? My highest score was 9/12 (and the rest 7s, so it was seemingly a fluke), and I don’t know a single person who scored higher, even people who are almost definitively better writers than me! Could it be that ACT essay skill doesn’t easily translate into real creative writing skill?

When I was first looking into Swarthmore I had a hard rime finding solid statistics on the school so since I received my acceptance a few days ago I thought I would post my statistics here (even though my stats don’t seem that common for acceptances).

Decision: Accepted - early write

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT (breakdown): 28 (28 Math, 30 Reading, 28 English, 26 Science, 6 Essay)
SAT II: Didn’t take
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.97

AP (place score in parenthesis): AP World History (4), AP US History (3), AP Spanish Language (5), AP English Language (4), AP Biology (3), AP Psycology, AP Calculus, AP Spanish Literature, AP English Literature, AP US Government
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus, AP Spanish Literature, AP English Literature, AP US Government, Physics (I’m not a science person unfortunately)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student Government for 2 years, Hispanic rights activist and also leader for motivating middle school student from underrepresented minorities to stay in school, translation on free no time (no hours gathered), and does playing oboe in band count?
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: Migrant Camps and Translation!
Summer Activities: Does volunteering count?
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I assume that both must’ve been good since I wasn’t expecting to be accepted.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Math teacher for 2 years (hopefully good but I don’t think she wrote much)
Teacher Rec #2:Spanish Teacher (most likely the best 10/10)
Counselor Rec: Average, probably generic
Additional Rec: None
Interview: None, I regret not reaching out to the school as much as I should’ve

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Humanities potentially
State (if domestic applicant): WA
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Large Public school
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: >$75,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 1st generation, URM, maybe ESL?

Reflection

Strengths: I think my strengths were my essays and GPA.
Weaknesses: Testing for sure, lack of job experience, lack of showing interest for school
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted because despite of my very obvious problem areas, I am able to bring something new to the school and also, my essays were probably so quirky that they probably had fun reading them.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Seattle University

General Comments:
I had not intended to apply to Swarthmore because I find these types of schools so out of reach for me with my ACT score and all. I had gotten their email for their fee waiver and since they had not required an extensive supplemental essay I thought that I wouldn’t lose anything by applying. I fell in love with the school soon after and I’m so happy I got accepted. I saw the small envelope arrive and thought it would be a rejection letter, but to my surprise it was the exact opposite! I guess I would like to let everyone know that even with ridiculously low standardized testing scores (well at least compared to their averages) you have a chance to get in!

@infof Thanks for the advice:
Decision: Accepted - Early Write

Yeah, I don’t know what the deal was with the ACT essay (I got a similar score on the SAT). I have atrocious handwriting, which probably didn’t help, but I also tried to write a very formulaic 5-paragraph essay, which I guess didn’t pan out so well. But yeah, even the truly great writers I know got about 7s on the ACT. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to matter much.

I had the same issue on the SAT. I’m generally a pretty good writer, and only got an 8 or 9 out of 12.

Essays: 8-9, My essays always showcase my voice and perspective. My main essay talked about my passion for Model UN and my dream of being a lawyer and then judge. Specifically my first conference where I won Outstanding Delegate on the ICJ.
Teacher Recommendation #1: Bio teacher, had me for Jr and Senior. I know this was glowing he practically told me.
Teacher Recommendation #2: US History Teacher, this one was spectacular. We met before he wrote the rec to talk about who I am and what I want for my future. He also let me read it before the final draft.
Counselor Rec: My relationship with my counselor has progressed over the years and I am actually really glad it has. I don’t know if this was good or bad but I’m sure it was honest and somewhat personal which is all I could have asked for.
Additional Info/Rec: *Note: I have an unusual medical circumstance that interfered with my sophomore year of high school. I wrote an additional essay that explained my story in a very personal and persevering way.
Interview: N/A
Art Supplement: N/A

Other
U.S. State/Territory or Country: USA/MA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Black (Mother born in london and father born in Jamaica, Caribbean heritage on both sides)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket Range: 50,000-60,000 (My parents are divorced and my father owes us thousands in child support)
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): A few? Refer to the above.

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, Recs, Overall perseverance in high school
Weaknesses: Course load, SATs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have no idea. I applied mainly because its a great school, I was offered a fee waiver and my english teacher (who didn’t write me a rec) is an alum who encouraged me to apply. I was on the fence about applying for a while but im ecstatic that I did. This is gonna make choosing a school extremely hard.
What would you have done differently?: Nothing, throughout my application process I strove to portray myself in the most honest way possible. I wanted colleges to see who I really am and accept me because they liked who I am and who I want to be.
Where else did you apply? A lot of other schools, 14 total (and one program). I’ve been accepted into all of the ones i’ve heard from so far.

General Comments & Advice: Don’t apply to a lot of schools unless your willing to put the time and effort into the applications. Vary your list with matches, reaches and safeties.
Honesty is the best policy!
*I am proof that an unusual circumstance that has affected your high school career will not destroy your chances at greats schools.

Does not getting an early write mean you’re not accepted? Or does my kid still have a chance?

Yes, your kid still has a chance. Many students are accepted RD who do not receive an early write.

@cantwaittoknow‌
early writes are only a small percent of admits.
