$$$$$ Official Thread - Admission into NEOMED BS/MD Program (Fall of 2016) $$$$$

Hi Everyone,
My son is M2 at NEOMED. I’ve been reading the thread and decided to share with you things I have learned about the school. First, he loves the school. The profs are always willing to help. It is not an easy program. Very intense. He is studying for the board right now and studies 12 hours per day. Takes Saturday evening off to see everyone. He has a good group of friends that all bonded in undergrad. There is a sense of community within the school and among the students. His friends all work together to help each other. I’ve never seen him work this hard before.I can’t imagine trying to get an MBA when taking classes, going to the hospital, studying for exams that have 54-59 hours of lecture in it, reviewing lecture videos, writing papers, doing presentations and studying for the board at the same time.
He did 2 years at the UG school and marticulated as schedule. Some of his friends did opt out for a 3rd year.

My advice is to have your child develop strong friendships with the other students during the undergrad education. There was no back stabbing or deceit among the students in his class. It is competitive. There are the gunners.

My neighbors son interviewed also for the program. He interviewed at the end of January. As far as I know, he has not heard anything yet. No email, no letter thus far.

Good luck to everyone!

@Medmom123
Thank you for the insight & advise! And good luck to your son on Step 1! With that much focus & drive, I’m sure he’ll do great!

Do you happen to still remember what the ‘good’ envelopes were like by any chance? Big/small, fat/thin, etc. As a parent who will likely have envelopes staring at me all day until my son gets home from school, I’d love to know which to have ready - celebratory cake with congrats on it or a decadent consolation cake to bury sorrows in! Lol.

I did not talk directly. But came to know from some one else, there is a girl from Palo Alto CA got her NEOMED offer mail last Tuesday. On the same day, my D got just the UG admission letter from U.of Akron. Not sure it is a good or bad sign.

@goldenrock - Neomed official decision date was last Friday March 11th 2016, and that date was communicated by the Neomed folks during interview weekend, so not sure how this girl from CA could have received her offer on March 8th 2016. I don’t think anyone here has posted 2 different decision dates…even over phone calls all the UGs and Neomed stated only 1 decision date -March 11th 2016. And to receive a mail in CA on March 8th, that letter needs to be mailed out from Ohio sometime end of Feb or early March !! Neomed interviews in February ended on 21. That would only give the colleges maybe 8-10 days ( since deliberations begin after everyone is interviewed) to make their decision to send a letter to this person by end of Feb or early March for them to receive by March 8th. Huh

It is possible because
A. NEOMED is primarily for Ohio state. So the offers for OOS is around 5+. So they would have finalized OOS early.
B. Majority of OOS (90-95% of OOS students) were invited for Jan 31st interview. So there was so much lead time to finalize the OOS students.

@GoldenRock If I understand & remember you correctly, your daughter was invited & attended interviews as an oos applicant but didn’t get an UG admission decision until last Tuesday?
Heaven knows I’ve been wrong before (lol!) but I thought applicants had to first be accepted to the individual UGs before being considered for the BSMD program.
Out of curiosity then, did the program mail out UG acceptances much later for ALL the OOS applicants? The Palo Alto student’s reporting probably was just for UG as well then, not the BSMD program. I believe all the IS students received the UG letters around the same time as the interview invitations in December. If so, then they are handling OOS applicants very differently than IS. Maybe it is a good sign… Without knowing why your daughter’s arrived so late in comparison, it’s hard to really guess. Let’s hope it is!

@GoldenRock, my situation is similar to yours. I’m also OOS, I recently (not sure of the exact date) received the acceptance letter with scholarship and Honors college information for UG @Akron - the letter is dated March 2.

I had interviewed at Akron/NEOMED on Sat, Jan 30 - Akron was the only UG which had extended the interview invite.

PS: Although, few weeks back I have received UG acceptance and scholarship information from Kent; UG acceptance from Youngstown - these are unrelated to NEOMED as these partners did not offer interviews.

In Mid Dec my D got UG acceptance only from Kent and YS and did not get interview with those 2. But got interview only from UofA/Neomed but did not get UG acceptance letter then. UG letter is dated 3/3 and it reached 3/8. Based on the pattern for us, I am not positive at this point for NEOMED. Interestingly my contact told the girl who got is NEOMED offer only but she has declined the offer (presume she had some other BS/MD offer in hand).

Ditto. We also got some scholarship info from Kent 1-2 weeks back. I think they are processed OOS first since they need more lead time to reach but it reached way too fast even before IS got the letters.

@goldenrock
Did this person have to accept/ decline via snail mail or online ?
What did the “good” mail look like ? – Referencing @jumbletumbles question from post#161

Any IS receive anything yet ? Anyone who lives close by (40 - 60 miles radius / same zip code folks) to NEOMED ??

I’ve read in previous threads that candidates have been offered a match school & then also a waitlist position to a second UG in he past.

Does anyone know if candidates can be matched and offered waitlist positions in the other two programs also, rather than just one waitlist?

And if offered a match to #2 choice and waitlisted at #1 choice, are you allowed to accept both offers in the hopes that you get moved off the waitlist at first choice?

IS and haven’t gotten NEOMED letter yet. Just wanting to prepare for the letdown if rejected or waitlisted letters come before a match letter HOPEFULLY arrives. Gotta hang on to the hope until it’s over after all!

I just got a letter in the mail from YSU placing me on the alternate list…It was my third choice and am IS…Does it mean the other two ( Akron and Kent ) rejected me?

BTW, Good luck to all of you guys…

@bsmd2020 - which part of Ohio are you in, Cincinnati, Columbus, Akron, North, Northeast etc …

I would call them and ask for a clearer understanding. What are stats? You are the first one that has heard thus far.

@Medmom123 - Who would they call the UG or Neomed ? Don’t know who is calling the shots here …at this point in process. They could save themselves from so many phone calls by stating how to decipher the match results …

@bsmd2020 - By when do you have to respond ?

Thanks guys…I am from the Canton area…

@Medmom123…My stats are…ACT 34…GPA 4.55 …

It was just a regular white envelope, not a packet of information. Oh, and by the way. The “your accepted” was in the middle of the letter. Very nerve wrecking reading it. Fortunately for us, it was good news. Good Luck to everyone.

@medmom123 - Thank you.
