OFFICIAL THREAD: Financial Aid Offers

^^^
Which of the Texas state schools are generous to OOS students with 0 EFC?

he’s right. for those of us who worked our butts off to get into university park and it is our number one school, whatever happened to the mantra that we as americans can attain anything we put our minds to? I guess that OUR lives and futures must suffer due to the financial restrictions of our PARENTS. that makes alot of sense.

why should we be restricted? we did nothing wrong. the saying should really be changed to, you can attain anything you want, as long as you were blessed with parents that have the proper resources to do so.

Honestly, how can a school expect a student to start their lives with 140,000+ worth of debt, coming from families making less than what the cost of tuition is each year? that isnt right.

^^^
Maybe PSU doesn’t expect students whose families make less than what the cost of tuition is each year to start their lives $140K+ in debt. Perhaps PSU expects THOSE students to attend less expensive in-state colleges where they will not incur such large debt.

that is just unjust. why should (just talking in example) I, just as qualified, or overly qualified than a student who has the money where they dont even need finaid NOT go to penn state? More importantly, why would a university want to admit the majority as comign from wealthy backgrounds? I think what you’re saying is absurd.

IF my son had applied to UT as an ENGR student and had been accepted…without any scholarships (unlikely if he BARELY made it in)…he would be paying around $26000 (rough estimate based on what folks have told me). And that is for an IN-STATE student! That ain’t cheap!

If you are a decent student (good enough to get into PSU) - you could get close to full rides at the major universities in OK, LA, NM, AL, etc. All good universities. Unless PSU has something to offer that the others don’t (as was the case for my son) - then you should have plenty of good options.

Why should a person that has more money than someone else drive a nicer car or live in a bigger house? What makes you think life is fair? State colleges are supported by the taxpayers within that state for the benefit of the children of those taxpayers. You don’t like the system? Ask your parents why they can’t afford to send you to another state’s public university. Ask them why they haven’t voted to change the system. Go out and organize and vote for politicians that will change the system for YOUR children or start saving. You should have college alternatives to PSU that will help you acquire a good education…PSU does not need to educate you.

any1 who posted their finaid rewards minorities? im a minority u think that will help? tanks

Apparently not, I am and still got crappy aid. And it’s need based so minority isn’t a factor.

I’m an out of state minority too and I only got 3,500 in grants and haven’t heard anything about loans. My efc is around 2,500. I think this made my decision clear - I’m going to Rutgers.

Well, no surprise here. Federal loans, $5500.00.

guezz im nt going here lol 5500 federal student loan

its ok only my #1 school… thanks psu

I am sorry that everyone is so disappointed in their financial aid packages, and I fully understand the frustration when other schools are offering significantly better packages. And PSU is pricy - no question! Especially for OOS.

But why is this coming as such a surprise to people? PSU is known for pitiful packages for incoming freshman - and they readily admit this.

I was not surprised, it’s what I expected. They did not see my Wonderfulness. But many of us are new at this and even though we didn’t really expect anything, it would have been sweet.

Summer: 500 grant
fall/spring: 11000 combined

DVA: GI BILL: full tuition
1000 book stipen per year
1100 monthly for housing
ARNG: EAP : 2700 per semester
FTA: 4400 per year

slipjig - I am sorry they didn’t see your “Wonderfulness!” And yes - it’s always nice to get something unexpected!

I got what I expected. 5500 in fed loans!

is any1 who wanted to go to penn state NOT going JUST because of the (crappy) financial aid? i unfortunately and regretfully must say I am one who can’t go. 5500 a year won’t cut it for me.

Penn State was my top choice for years and now I cant go do to price. They are offering me a lillte over $10,000 (excluding loans) and I am african american. I aplied to American University and they offered me a full scholarship including the fafsa.

THANK YOU PENN STATE FOR DESTROYING MY COLLEGE DREAMS

^^^

Dude, 10k a year is a lot.

Most people don’t get nearly as much aid from Penn State

I was going to say the same! Most people aren’t getting anywhere near $10,000. That’s actually quite good.
