***Official Thread for 2014 BSMD applicants***

So I just did some calculations and I found it quite interesting… the chance of any applicant getting accepted to the NJIT BS/MD program is about 4% (of course fluctuating when other factors are taken into account). In comparison, Harvard’s acceptance rate is 5.9%, almost 2% higher. And Princeton’s acceptance rate is 8.5%, more than double that…

Now, I’d like to congratulate everyone because by getting through to the first interview, all our chances had probably increased quite a bit… Just know that when the interview invitations for the med school come out, those who get it have about a 50-50 chance of being accepted, which is crazy to think about and nice to know after going that far.
/thinking out loud

@starlight27, thank you for the information. My son did not apply to NJIT. He applied to Drew/NJMS program and had his Skype interview with Drew a few days ago.

@IMGDAD I’m applying to drew too! I just had the interview yesterday.

Does anyone know of any good scholarships for UTPACT?

for NJIT, if you’re out of state, is it better to travel to the on-site location or just do the phone interview? how big of a difference will it make?

@chean21. It is ALWAYS better to do interview in person because there are certain aspects of interview, such as body language, etc that just cannot be captured fully on Skype and definitely not on the phone. But you can only go to all the interviews if you have the time and financial resources to do so. You have to be realistic. If you have applied to many programs and if this is only the interview for the UG admissions, you may want to save the expense and time for medical school interviews.

"Does anyone know of any good scholarships for UTPACT? "

PACT is a program which is quite exclusive.

In order for you to worry about a scholarship, you need to get in first.

People who have gotten in pay almost nothing to get an undergrad degree.

Agree with Texaspg. Everyone who gets in and most of those who apply but did not get in would have the stats to qualify for the top or second level scholarships that is a fullride +/- expenses for the UG education.

Agreed on that. I think it’s cool though that the bs/md program in itself allows students to be able to get immense scholarships of various sorts to pretty much cover most of the UG costs. Med school is another story… where it’s rare to even get merit scholarships, I’ve heard…

“to get immense scholarships of various sorts to pretty much cover most of the UG costs.”

Unfortunately, most schools take the other route, i.e., not give you any merit money that you might get otherwise by applying only to undergrad.

UT PACT is unique because the school starts out by giving out scholarships based on your GPA and scores and most students who make it to the interview already have their tuition waived and a good chunk of living costs covered. What I understood is that the rest of the costs are also covered if one makes PACT program and joins the undergrad.

Well I know Kean does that with their bs/md program and it sucks but I’m not familiar with any others that do. I’ve asked several admissions officers when i met them about their school specific stands on this issue. Unfortunately some of them are confused and don’t know what the heck i’m talking about.

This program sounds interesting. I’m not too familiar with it…

…I just read that it’s for texas residents. Which I am not.

How good is PACT? Any examples of the kind of stats they want? What are they looking for

@t14premed, PACT is a very good program, with the medical school part being at Southwestern, one of the top schools in this country, with Nobel laureates on the faculty. The only anxiety I have about the program is that the Admissions Director made it clear to us that the program (at least the UTD part) prefers students who wants to be practicing physicians and not those who are interested in research. There is nothing wrong with being a pure physicians but I think it would be a waste of the places at UT Southwestern where there is a wealth of resources of research.

t14 - at least two who joined this year from Houston were also admitted to Stanford.

? Is that Florida Atlantic…?? sorry for ignorance?

@silverwad, FAME is the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio’s BS/MD program. It is rather new and only started last year.

@Doctor43, from my very limited experience in the FAME program (my daughter applied there last year), I suspect that preferences are given to students from South Texas.

Okay…I always welcome new information…Thank You. Obviously I was fooled by the letters(Facilitated Acceptance to Medical Education). Now UTHSC I would have guessed right(LOL).

There was also SHAPE with UT Austin that now disappeared after two admission years.

thanks for your valuable insight @texaspg and @IMGDAD
i know we have a long time to go, but any idea how the interview sessions for PACT and FAME are
