VP/President of a few clubs like Computer Science Club, Medical Club etc.
Iāve a strong technical background - fluent in Java, web & mobile apps, with few websites and some apps in app store, did a couple of pro-bono internships that were well regarded, and won prizes at many hackathons. would mentioning this hurt my BSMD chances? my favorite tech project is one where i used tech to help with medical training, and iām highlighting that for sure. And no, Iām not interested in Computer Science as a career, iām one of those nuts that really wants to be a doctor.
@chick5 - No GAP email yet. It appears it will take couple of weeks.
Northwestern HPME applications can be requested now. DS received online application link last night.
In some other thread, I read this. So if any one interested, here is a new BS/MD program.
Is this a BS/MD or BS/DO program?
@srk2017, KCUMB is an osteopathic medical school, so it would be a Bachelor/DO program.
@Roentgen - I initially thought it was DO and then they talked about new school in 2017. Afterwards, I realized they are starting a new campus.
@srk2017, if Iām not mistaken, I think itās more of a satellite campus in Joplin, Missouri under the same medical school, KCUMB. They are probably building a new building there in Joplin though. That type of setup happens sometimes during the clinical years of medical schools, but does happen more often with D.O. schools in terms of satellite campuses, than in the MD allopathic world. There are a few allopathic med schools that do this but itās not the norm.
Itās past mid-September-- Does anyone know the status of Miamiās Dual Degree in Medicine program? I called today and the UG office said they were still working on it, but the deadline is approaching fast.
@h99999, itās really weird if Miamiās Dual Degree in Medicine application is not up yet, unless the deadline is like January or something. Itās always been November 1 in the past.
It seems to be the same application every year. http://www6.miami.edu/marcom/dualdegree/medicine_Supplemental_App.pdf
So I would just fill this out in the meantime while waiting.
How many students does Miami take? Also, how strong is the program, comparable or better than BU or CWRU o REMS etcā¦?
@srk2017 - Miami takes around 40 students. The program is in the upper echelon of 2nd tier BS/MD programs. The program is comparable to BU, though slightly lower. And it is lower than both REMS and CWRU. A good rule of thumb to gauge the competitiveness/strength of programs is by looking at their med school rankings. As youāll see, most top tier programs are connected to med schools in the top 20-25 (with the exception of Brown PLME).
However, if you are interested in ophthalmology, then Miami HPME is arguably the best program because they are right across the street from Bascom Palmer, which is the best eye hospital in the country.
@srk2017, Miami Miller, in terms of the entire med school class, is about 150 students: http://admissions.med.miami.edu/md-programs/general-md/class-profile. Iām not sure what percentage are Dual-Degree in Medicine students.
Miami Miller is the strongest medical school in Florida and is a strong middle-tier medical school, but probably not near the level of CWRU, Rochester, or BU (although there is a lot to be said for not dealing with cold weather and snow while going thru med school). That being said, their residency programs in Ophthalmology (Bascom Palmer - #1) and Derm are in the top tier of their respective specialties. You would be in no way at a disadvantage, in terms of the residency match, or for more competitive residencies, solely due to having gone to Miami Miller.
In the preclinical/basic science years (usually the first 2 years) I believe Miami-Miller and Rochester are Pass/Fail but do keep track of ranking internally in some form. Miami-Miller does it by quartiles. Rochester mainly does it for AOA Honor Society selection purposes, but not for calculating class rank.
Both BU and CWRU are also Pass/Fail in the preclinical/basic science years as well, but there is no further internal tracking of performance during those years, what is called ātrueā Pass/Fail grading.
@Roentgen and @bsmdprep - Thanks for info on Miami. My S doesnāt do well in humid weather, so Miami weather is -ve for him.
@srk2017, vs. driving thru several feet of snow and frigid temperatures as youāll probably get in Boston and New York?
@Roentgen - Yes, unfortunately. He gets dehydrated easily.
@srk2017, ah, fair enough.
@Roentgen, what are your thoughts on the attrition rate at Miami for BS/MD? I have heard that only 60% progress to MD part.
Agree with @chick5, and I remember I saw that 60% attrition rate from Miami website before. Maybe someone from the problem can enlighten us on this.
