***Official Thread for 2020 BSMD applicants***

Get a good night sleep, take your time in answering without rush, treat it more as a conversation than some interview, don’t be shy with body language and be yourself. You will do great.
Good luck!

Thank you so much!

Regarding the USMLE change negatively impacting DOs — will this be for all Residencies including the lower-demand like Fam, IM, Peds OR only the higher-demand like EP, Plastic, Derm etc ?

Reason why ask is currently the better DO schools like MSU, KCU seem to be receiving 100% match , most of them might be lower demand Residencies. Will this be at risk in the future ?

Thanks

You can’t say IM or Peds lower demand since you need to do them if you want to be a specialist (GI, Cardio, ID etc…). One way DOs are getting good matches is high step scores. Without those now it may depend college reputation, ECs and LORs.

Step 1 has nothing to do with MCAT scores. We are talking about residency applications. Most BSMD students are good test takers so they would have done good in USMLE and negated any advantage traditional path candidates may have in ECs and life experiences from spending extra year in college or gap years.

I got an interview for Hofstra’s BS/MD. However, I heard that the surrounding area of Hempstead is not that great and has violence, etc. Does anyone know the Hempstead area well, or can provide any thoughts?? And I also heard that it’s hard to get around if you don’t have a car at Hofstra. Is this true?

Worry about those issues once you get an acceptance, right now focus on interview.

Does anyone know what the Hofstra interview is like?

I agree BS MD students are good test takers.

Is there any data available on speciality residency match as to how bs md students perform as compared to traditional Medical students in the same medical school. NU And BU programs
have been there for a long time.

I doubt you can find any source for such information regardless of BSMD or traditional route. First define specialty residences ( a subjective list) and then try to collect data from both NU and BU for those. The last step is to find out who was BSMD and who was not. Good luck.

USLME step 1 was used as an unintended measure for residency screening. Basically, you are asking who does better in USLME Step 1 BSMD or traditional route students. MD students know the importance of USLME step 1 and prepare accordingly. With USLME step 1 score eliminated as a criteria for residency scanning starting Jan 2022, USLME step 2 CK score will probably replace it.

@lovesamranaa - I received a private message from you saying you are a junior and asking me for my essays. You applied to Hofstra as a junior?

Most of us on this path are working hard and struggling to achieve their dreams. Such of lack of integrity is shocking to say the least.

ouch, that sounds more like a freshman or middle schooler. That’s an easy P/F grading.

@bsmdmom and @NoviceDad thank you for letting me know!

sorry I meant senior. my younger sibling is applying next year.

@brainbuilder02

Do you really need to shame them publicly? Did you try to PM back and find out what exactly they are asking? Asking for essay guidance is not bad, but asking for your essays is bad. Even if that’s the case you should respond back to them privately not question their integrity!

@srk2017 You would pass the CASPer exam with flying colors! Handling potentially questionable ethical issue with subtlety!

@brainbuilder02 you did not PM me back to understand where I was coming from. It was a typo on my part. Humans are not robots. we all make mistakes. As an aspiring physician, you should understand that we all make mistakes.

Are we doing an interview practice now?
